what's the freakiest song(s) you know in the world of prog?

when my musical knowledge wasnt as vast as it is now, ii would have said 'On the Run' by Pink Floyd. it's still scary, but i know better.

'It Can't Happen Here' by Frank Zappa freaks me out every time, especially when im messed up. i can make it to the strange instrumental section, but when it, out of no where, comes back to the weird vocal parts, i usually last half a minute or so before i have to change songs.

another would be 'A Saucerful of Secrets' by Pink Floyd. The ultimate one being on Ummagumma. bad things happen in my head listening to this song, unless i make it to the end then it's very rewarding.

at the moment im trying to think of more songs, but cant. ill add some later on.

how bout you guys?

Diana by Comus, off First Utterance...

Well, actually, just about anything off that album, but Diana is more freaky, while the rest are simply disturbing...  Not surprising considering that the main songwriter was in and out of an insane asylum...

Carry Stress In The Jaw by Mr. Bungle - crazy free jazz/death metal combination
Elastic by Meshuggah... the most extreme metal madness in my collection
Fantomas' Delirium Cordia... one of the weirdest/darkest/freakiest/longest(70 minutes) compositions that I know
Iron, Glass Blocks And White Lights by Merzbow - 20 minutes of hardcore Japanese noise

There's more, but I'm too lazy now...

All of its songs are noise. Merzbuddha is another great album if you enjoy them.

I would like to add Squeeze me macaroni by Mr.Bungle as well. The song isn't really freaky, but the lyrics... the lyrics can make you puke!

Pink Floyd's One of These Days (The maniacal voice towards the end still gives me the creepies) and Bike (the noises at the end ..... like nails on a chalkboard).

For a non-prog entry: Alice Cooper's Cold Ethyl...... Any song extolling the virtues of necrophilia ranks way up there on the freaky scale.

I really don't get freaked out by any vocals or music... even stuff like Comus.  I find it beautiful though, not disturbing.

I cannot think of a singer piece that I get panicky about.

Do try something by Univers Zero or Present though, they do some terrifically dark stuff, but not necessarily freaky.

Gotta be something by Comus, they're the only band that can actually freak me out.

Mr. Bungle used to scare the crap out of me too, but I guess I've listened to it too much. I have a crazy fear of clowns, so circus music in general will mess with my head.

I never found Diana to be that weird or freaky.  Drip Drip is IMO the freakiest on that album (Even the Earth will fill the crack where entered my blade; as I carry you to your grave, etc.), but Herald is a close  second.  I don't know why, but something about that track freaks me out every time.

A Plague of Lighthouse keepers is awefully freaky too.  Come to think of it, a lot of VdGG and pH is that way.

Some of the stuff by the KC ProjeKcts freaks me out, especially Deception of the Thrush.

Lots of Arthur Brown can be freaky too.  The Crazy World has some stuff like that (Nightmare, Fire Poem), but Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come had the freakiest stuff.  His entire Journey album gives me creeps.

This is a great topic! Haha, let me think...

The end of "A Day In The Life" really freaks me out.

"Kids On Holiday" - Animal Collective
While being an excellent song, just sends my mind on a trip. The random laughter, surreal lyrics, and the drone in the background are too much! I still love it though.

"Tongues", "Shadowplay" - Fish
The latter is one of my favorite Fish songs, but both of them have a really uneasy atmosphere and creepy imagery! My fingernails are bleeding from climbin' up the walls...

"Static" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The band has plenty of songs that are really heavy, but none of them ever freak me out at all - except this one. "East Hastings" sounds like the end of the world, and "The Dead Flag Blues" is really dark, but this is the only song that creates that vibe that something's wrong. The preacher is just scary man!

"Darkness" - Peter Gabriel
Haha, okay - this one is more of a joke. But the first time I put in the album... the first thirty seconds were really subtle and quiet, so I turned it up, and then this wall of noise just crushed my brain! I jumped!

Now I'm accustomed to Zappa, but "It Can't Happen Here" gets me every time. Also some of the shorter dialogue types aren't freaky to me, but I just find them weird. Some examples are "Hot Poop" and "Telephone Conversation"

Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin, the part where the children singing comes in, really gives me the creeps!

Some of Syd Barrett's songs are teetering on the edge of sanity but even they sound normal compared to Daniel Johnston!

Daniel Johnston? The blues guy from the 40's? Is it good? I mean, I'm generally disapointed with very old stuff, like Armstrong, or very early Davis.

And for the freak stuff:
Ship's A'Going Down by The Residents is no song to listen before bedtime...

Haha, no, you're thinking of Robert Johnson. His material is amazing, and sometimes kind of bleak - but no disturbing. Daniel Johnston is an artist whose work is defined as "outsider art." Basically, he doesn't fit any one genre, but it's really beautiful stuff. A movie came out recently that gives some insight on the guy's life, The Devil & Daniel Johnston.

hahaha! I agree with Faaip de Oiad by Tool. That is the first song that I ever remember scarring me!

...And has anyone mentioned Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, that music is damned I say! Especially the animal noises in A Hymn to the Morning Star.

Some Alamaailman Vasarat moments scare me also, but not nearly in the same way as the before mentioned.

Mr. Bungle and Fantomas yes, but usually when Mike Patton comes back in it usually gets less frightening. This is not an insult of course, I just believe he provides some comic relief.
