Let's face it, the ratio has to be like 1 to 100 or something crazy, so I've put together a cd for my girlfriend to introduce her to pre-80s prog in a way that won't turn her off to it forever and quite possibly ween her into the genre slowly. Tell me what you think/what I should add/reject.
Thanks, Gaston
Breathe - PF I Know What I like (In your wardrobe) - Genesis Black Cat - GG Lady of the Dancing Water - KC Horizens - Hackett/Genesis Time - PF Turn of the Century - Yes C'est La Vie - ELP Think of me with Kindness - GG Your Own Special Way - Genesis Wish You Were Here - PF A Reunion - GG From The Beginning - ELP Day After Day (The Show Must Go On) - APP Comfortably Numb - PF

Seems like a good mix of prog pop and ear friendly songs. Im sure your girlfriend will like it, or at least some songs. Well done

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
King Crimson - In the Wake of Poseidon
King Crimson - Peace (Theme)
Yes - And You And I
Yes - Turn of the Century
Genesis - Cinema Show
Caravan - Love to Love You
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
The Two Yes ones are absolutely essential IMO. Come on, beautiful, accessible, romantic, and proggy. What else could you want. I'd say choose between the two longer King Crimson tracks above and add the Peace in too. Cinema Show is essential.

Yup, I'd go with Fallen Angel for KC as well.
Also try and fit "The Great Gig In The Sky" in there, then maybe she will realize that women make great prog-screamers
Also maybe Mrs. Torry has a good-looking daughter your girlfriend can introduce me to once they become progressive-based friends?

My wife likes "In the Court..." but found "Fallen Angel" too dark lyrically.

And You and I is too long, maybe for phase 2 I'll start with some longer songs. I'm trying to stick under 6 minutes.
Fallen Angel seems a little heavy to me, Lady has a flute in it. I dunno. Seems like an excuse for me to listen to Red now though, ha!

I think some BJH, Anthony Phillips, SKY, and Camel would be nice for this sort of thing.

"Epitath" from King Crimson. I was 12 years the first time I heard it, and I loved it.
You can also add " Foot Prints in the Snow" from the Black Moon album of ELP. I like it very much and Greg's voice is nice on this song.
Focus: "Hocus Pocus" This is great. Even my 11 years old daughter loves it.
You can also add some Supertramp. It's easy listening progressive music; Fool's Overture, School, Give a little bit,...
From Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Brodway. I was 13 years old at the time, and I loved it.
The Runaway from Gentle Giant. It's fun and easy to listen to.
Add some Moody Blues between those prog.pieces, she will love it.

Alan Parsons projects is good too; Games People play, Eye in the Sky,I Robot, etc... These are great songs for women. Personnaly, I always like his album Tales and Imagination on Edgar Allan Poe stories, but maybe it's too rough for now.

Spartacus from Triumvirat.Only the song which is around 7 minutes.
Jon & Vangelis: The Friends of Mister Cairo.
Some Loreena McKennit; The Book of Secrets.
Some Jean Luc Ponthy is great too; electric violin is fun and ok for women.
Also a classic one from Procol Harum: A Whiter Shade of Pale.

I introduced my fiance to prog by letting her hear some Camel and Kansas songs. She immediately loved the album Moonmadness, the Snowgoose ( I will never forget the look on her face when she heard Rhayader) and Leftoverture. Bands like Yes ( Siberian Khatru), Genesis (Watcher of The Skies), Rush (Tears, Everyday Glory) and Return to Forever also became her favorites.

I would definately add some Jethro Tull (Mother Goose is the first to come to mind) Also, I agree with those who are saying "And You And I", beautiful song that's essential to the genre.

not a bad list (i'm least familiar with GG though),
the issue fo woman and prog is generally a painful one, however i have certainly met ones who could handle some heavy stuff (which was most joyfull).
i would suggest a few apporaches;
1. give the cd as is and then get her reactions so that you may understand her taste better and work acordingly. in my expereince most woman love the ballads and melodic stuff). she may fast track bits she may fidn jarring and she may be already familar with the PF, in any case there will be limits to what you can control at this stage.
2. not sure how long have you been with your girlfriend and how much you have already treid to introduce her to various factions:
her personality may have alot to do with her natural inclination to music, if she is a dynamic person, likes stimulation, surprises etc, you may be surprised at just what she may care to listen to under the right environment. if she is conventional and mainstreamy , well, we know the rest.. but trust your instincts as to what she may enjoy as you are her partner.
in any case i would make a special evening (do the coocking, get the wine and candles out) and then introduce specific tracks with a small introduction and play it through a really good system.
good luck, let us know how it went if you wish, we can all learn how to deal with this issue i think,

Always hard to say when it comes to prog.
Going by my own experiences with women I have known, and especially with my wife, I would say AVOID RUSH AND YES. Whenever I have played these bands to them, there nearly always comes the comment, after about five minutes, of 'what a noise!'.
I suspect the high vocals put them off.
Otherwise, its pretty much 'try it and see.' I would say, however, that the more melodic and the less experimental an album is, the better chance it has of being liked by the fair sex. (Of course, there are many exceptions, so its not an established fact.)

Well, as a woman, I have to say that if someone gave me a prog sampler including the godawful "Your Own Special Way", I'd have them run for the hiills in the shortest possible time... Of course, I am that one in 100 women who likes prog and even some harder-edged music (I was the one responsible for the notorious Iron Maiden addition).
That said, a band I'd very heartily recommend to you is Caravan - especially the shorter songs such as "Golf Girl" or the wonderful "Winter Wine" (my personal favourite). Other good bets, though they belong to the Prog-Related category, would be Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Other suggestions: The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Supertramp, ELO....
Ah, BTW, I absolutely LOVE Rush and Yes.... hahahahahhahahha
