I promise it's the final one, I just want to get an idea what people think about the New York masters, not to put them against other bands but to see if they are somebody else's favorites.

For me Dream Theater is... the band that showed me the light.  if it werent for dream theater I would still listen to bands like manowar and iron maiden. dream theater made me realize that most metal bands these days cant really play their instruments and all of a sudden most metal songs appeared hollow. hey I loved iron maiden, dont get me wrong. I will buy somewhere in time when I get the chance but I dont like any album before number of the beast and after the one which came before fear of the dark (or was it no prayer for the dying?^^). Since I listened to DT i cant bear listen to most metal bands including IM though. it's just like I cant get myself to listen to most prog metal bands that are more metal than prog. the music just appears emotionless and boring to me. riverside, pain of salvation and similar bands are ok but even dream theater lost their appeal (which might come due to the fact that I just overplayed their stuff). I didnt want to bash iron maiden with my last post. imo they are way better than all those death and black metal bands (and most other metal bands for instance) but I guess metal just isnt my cup of tea anymore.  ------------- http://www.last.fm/user/dAJaro/?chartstyle=basic10">

Yeah, I believe that the songwriting of Iron Maiden is a bit superior to Dream Theater's. Plus, they don't indulge in super-lighting speed and nonsensical guitar/keyboard solos which sometimes (not always) happens with Dream Theater. I voted for "very good" |

After seeing "Score", DT moved up a notch in ratings for me. IMO, there was a really good variety of styles in that concert. And a good balance between soloing and song playing. ------------- If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud! |

I dont know. After listening to In rock and Machine head by deep purple and salisbury and look at yourself by uriah heep (and of course some other stuff like hendrix, zeppelin, black sabbath and so on...) I get the feeling that everything about heavy metal was already said in the seventies (much like in prog, even though it would be quite the exaggeration to say so in both cases). in my opinion there are more inventive prog bands than metal bands since the seventies. just listen to the endless list of heavy metal clone bands à la hammerfall, marduk and cannibal corpse to understand what i mean. when i was still listening to heavy metal I thought that metal started in the eighties (and many believe it did). just because you use another kind of bread for your sandwich doesnt mean that you are either inventive or that the taste improves when you use brown bread instead of white bread. None of the options in the poll adequately described my opinion of them. I respect them and sometimes enjoy their music (particularly SFAM), but I have two major issues with them: 1) LaBrie's singing. I hate it, and I hate it more and more as I listen to it more. Ironically, I think he did a great job on The Human Equation. Not sure why he sounds so bad with DT generally. 2) Their songwriting. Obviously they can all play their instruments unbelievably well, but creating interesting songs consistently is another matter. On top of that, the lyrics leave a lot to be desired, particularly when they get sappy (i.e. a lot of the album Octavarium). |

oh how did I miss this... For me DT is....... a joke.. plain and simple... great talent gone to complete waste on crappy uninspired music. that is much more fun to make fun of than listen to. I tried.. a complete album and various 'best of' songs that left me colder than that unfortunately lad on the cover of In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum edit. oh yeah.. as far as the poll itself....
