Alan Freeman introduced me to a lot of progressive rock music in his BBC Radio 1 Saturday Rock Show in the 1970s. I first heard 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson, The Musical Box by Genesis, Bedside Manners are Extra by Greenslade, Breathe reprise/ Time by Pink Floyd etc on this programme. There are other things that I have forgotten by name. He also introduced another wave of progressive groups when his rock show returned to the BBC around 1990. Does anyone know where it would be possible to obtain his playlists? |

Not sure about his playlists, but there was a double compilation album album called something like Alan Freeman By Invitation Only, which was an excellent collection of prog and 70s rock - is it available on CD anywhere? The Saturday Rock Show was a thing of wonder - Fluff's booming voice, jingles that used snippets of classical music and as much prog as you could shake a stick at - those were the days! Mind you, they were also the days of Tony Blackburn and Noel 'antichrist' Edmonds, lest we forget... ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' I had the album.It included tracks by LedZep,Yes,Delaney & Bonnie,Aretha Franklin,PFM,ELP,Wally,AWB,Roberta Flack,Rolling Stones,Buffalo Springfield,Stephen Stills and The Heavy Metal Kids!It was an Atlantic Records anniversary compilation. Quite a mixed bag. He also endorsed an album called Alan Freeman's History of Rock.On side 4 Genesis' The Knife was included.Sharing the compilation with Jim Reeves,Dion etc! I listened to his show religiously.Transforming a football mad teenager into a hermit-like 'head'. I seem to remember him playing a Pink Floyd live recording of DSoTM before the album had been released. He definately preveiwed Wish You Were Here. -------------

I used to almost "worship" him but whenever I have seen him on TV or caught an interview with him over the past few years, he seems so smug. Having said that-I've never met him, so maybe I am misjudging him. -------------

In about 1976 he had an unsigned band demo spot.One of the bands that he played was The Damned!
