Well, these two are more related than PT and DT, IMHO, so please, now what band do you prefer? Let's see now if PT rules the world....

As much as it was easy to vote for PTree when they were against DT, as much it is ridicolously easy to choose Pink Floyd without even a slight brain action or hesitation.

Pink Floyd are the past, Porcupine Tree is the future. I vote for PT unashamedly !
How childish of you to try and demolish PT after they destroyed Dream Theater in that poll... and you call yourself DT's critical objector...

1. Pink Floyd 2. My nose 3. Porcupine Tree
I prefer Porcupine Tree to my nose, but still I pick my nose a lot more often than I listen to Porcupine Tree.

Anyway, this poll is perfectly legitimate...Two good bands set out against each other, plus a third option many people would prefer for it doesn't require to spend neither money nor time.

Both of these bands are amazing, but I have to vote for PT, they're still my favorite band.

A very hard choice this one.
Floyd were always one of my favourite bands in the seventies, just behind Genesis and Yes in fact. And I still enjoy them now.
PT have been one of my fave modern bands since I heard The Sky Moves Sideways; ironically there most Floydy album!
I am one of those who prefer the older PT to the newer, heavier PT.
Nevertheless, as they are still evolving, and as I haven't heard a PT album I don't like yet, (unlike Floyd, were I don't like Ummagumma, More, Obscured By Clouds, Animals or The Final Cut), I voted in the end for PT.

Porcupine Tree is on its way to become one, one of these days. (no pun intended).
Hope their new record company won't make them change even more....

Well, the only problem is that DSOTM is one of my favorite albums ever. Other than that, PT has this poll in the bag. Their past 5 albums have been mindblowing and very innovative, and I enjoy Deadwing and Stupid Dream especially. I'll go with PT on this one.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Punk Floyd gets the vote. Based on what each band has done so far [notice how I play nice by deluding you that Porcupine Tree might ever stand a chance for comparison? ]

This poll is a lot like asking:
"What's better, the invention of the wheel or the invention of the automobile?"
One had to happen before the other. Clearly I'd prefer an automobile over a wheel, but that doesn't mean that the automobile is a better invention. In fact, it could easily be argued that the wheel is by far the most important of the two.
Similarly, I like PT more, but I can't actually vote for them, because I see that as being like voting for the automobile. Unlike the PT vs. DT thread, which actually made a lot of sense as a comparison, I really don't see the point of this.

Good analogy. In this case, I'll just pick my nose. I mean, it'll make me feel guilty if I had to vote one over the other.

I very much agree, just about everyone who I've shown PT has liked them. It won't be long until they have that HIT song and everyone notices them.
Either way, I still voted Pink Floyd. They have a Song for each time of year.

That begs for a question, if you listen to Pink Floyd more often than you pick your nose, then how many hours a day do you listen to Pink Floyd? Furthermore, do you ever eat, drink or sleep?

So you base your decision on popularity? Britney Spears is also one of the biggest names in modern music so do you think she is better than PT? And despite their popularity, the Stones and Beatles weren't all that great either.
Why say 'Porcupine Who' here? This band has made some really great music and deserves to be better known by the general public than they are.
My vote goes to PT. Simply put, better than all of the above

On a more serious note, I recently took DT's 'Octavarium' from the shelf where it was picking up dust, and to my surprise, I actually liked it this time around, save for two songs : The Answer Lies Within and that god-awful Coldplay parody I Walk Beside You. Other than that I have to admit it's a very fine album.
By the way Rich, I read your 'Victor' review. ! Great review for an equally great album !

You know, I do enjoy that album. It always makes me smile. And Lifeson really didn't get the due praise he deserves, IMO. I believe it shows he could make it as a solo artist, but lets hope this never happens.

I have had very high hopes for the new Rush CD. I hate to get over excited, but I know, regardless of how much I initially hate it, I will love it. Since Power Windows, it has taken time to get into each release. But now, they all are must haves and each has its own unique flavor.
This new single release seems to be different. I liked it very much from the start because I heard energy in the music. Real, lets have a kick ass time, fun energy. YYZ kind of energy. This is what makes me more excited than ever. Cross your fingers!

DT and PF are popular. Dream Theater isn't "virtuosity, speed and no more" like much people thinks. They learned Jazz and Classical music. Usually, DT's harmony is too complex. The metters too. Then DT isn't a common band. While PF's musicians have learned Rock and Roll. They composes "pentatonic Prog-Rock". I don't say PF is bad, but I think it isn't great.

I never was a Pink Floyd fan... Ok, ok, I know I'm a freak because of that but besides Animals, Piper and maybe Division Bell PF albums doesn't make me feel nothing... So my vote goes for Porcupine Tree. I really enjoy their albums even when there's a pinkflydian inffluence but Wilson and partners knew how to take that inffluences and make something new and fresh...

it isn't the record companies changing PT, its Steve Wilson's taste in music. He does in fact listen to a lot of metal. Of course he produced some of Opeth's Cds and also he's a huge fan of Meshuggah. He even mentions them in the thank you section in In Absentia: "and to Oliver Badin for introducing me to them [Opeth] and the other Swedish metal gods Meshuggah".
I vote PT. They are awesome.

Record companies can impact bands. Its been done before. Rush feel the "pressure" to write shorter songs.

they have been immortalized by time, but in all honesty, PF were more
innovative and revolutionary than PT has been, though PT is also a
great band.
