Proving that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has absolutely no credibility left... rappers "Grandmaster Flash and the furious five" have been inducted into the "rock and roll" hall of fame.

Think of all the Prog greats who have NOT been admitted to the Hall of Fame...
  • Genesis
  • Yes
  • King Crimson
  • Rush

and more... even Deep Purple who influenced prog and almost every genre of hard rock has not been inducted.

Disgusting...

Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.

What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.

I believe that this hall is formed by people that dont like prog

I'm quite sure that the only prog artists inducted there are Pink Floyd (thanks to DSOTM) and Zappa (an American)... I think that considering their career, their style and the fact that they are well known in the USA, The Moody Blues could be there.

Anyway, if we want to hail our esteemed artists a kind of Prog-Rock Hall of Fame should be created.

"Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five" most definitely belong in the R&RHoF but so the others listed (well maybe not Rush LOL)

Rap music does not belong in the RARHOF.  Unfortunately, the talk is that the flood gates are now open and you'll see large numbers of rap and hip hop acts enshrined over the next few years.

I've been pretty upset over the place not including prog acts.  The worst part is, it's malicious; I saw a transcript of a call into the RnR hall of fame that went something like this:

Caller: Why isn't Kansas in the Hall of Fame?

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Because it's pretentious drivel.

I was joking when I was in Cleveland that I should get some people together to march outside the building until VdGG was inductedBig%20smile  It'll be like the finale of MDK; the non-proggers will march against my prog march, but as they march they will hear the VdGG we are blasting, and see it's beauty.  One by one, they will leave the non-prog ranks and join ours, until the entire city marches on the building.  It'll be really cool!

Yes, this is partly run by Dave Marsh of Rolling Stone, who seemingly has never been a prog advocate. There has been long term criticisms of this farce anyway- I personally dislike the concept; it's terribly elitist, with music journalists nominating themselves as arbiters of 'all that is good' in rock. I read a website recently slamming it, saying 'the continued absence of progressive rock makes no sense'. I bet you'd find a lot of UK folk rock/ heavy rock in general absent too, really, as well.

Based on those four groups mentioned at the start of the thread, I'm assuming that Tull is already there then. That Tull is, in fact, the reason they started the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, which is a shortened form of the phrase The Rock 'n Roll [bands that aren't as good as Tull, so we'll jokingly give them their own] Hall of Fame. Right?

Sure why not.   I say that those who played significant roles in the development of what has become a wildly successful youth oriented musical genre should be recognized.  In the early days (when rap was good) rock influenced a lot of the sound.  Afrika Bambaataa who I consider more important than Grandmaster Flash had his biggest hit using the melody of Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" as its base.  We all know about Run DMC and Aerosmith collaberation along with a lot others.  Hey, rap is not everybody's cup of tea but I don't like U2 and they're in.  Rather than worry about who's getting in we should worry about who's not getting in.  the list is long and distingished.  It's sad that acts that are being overlooked and it's not because of rap.

rap surely isn't Rock and Roll therefore it doesn't belong on the RoR HoF, unless the name changed

neither is jazz, reggae or the blues.  So should we kick Miles Davis, Bob Marley and Muddy Waters out of the Hall of Fame?

This thread has been done many times already.

If the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame are silly enough not to recognize great Prog bands they shouldn't be taken seriously. Just don't mind them.

The so-called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the ultimate prostitute of the music world, with no offense meant to the ladies that carry out that oldest and most noble of human professions.... Believe me... If I record an album with me just talking in a certain rhythm and a beat behind me...wait!, that's today's rap!!...well, anyway, I could record an album with just sounds like birds, a river flowing, thunder, cows, whatever. If it sells more than a few millions, it will be in the Whore And Roll Hall of Fame.... A day will come when reggaeton will be inducted... but don't expect any good prog band ever to reach that place.. And good thing it doesn't happen.

You should see the list the RnR hall of fame and a collection of music merchandisers made of the top 200 albums of all time.  Its disgusting.

I don't care if Grandmaster Flash is in the hall of fame.  He's good.  James Brown, Aretha Franklin, numerous other soul, R&B, etc groups are in the hall of fame.  It doesn't really matter.

Well, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame feels socially obligated to induct talent as well as diversity into the Hall.

So the past few years a woman and a minorityhave been inducted into the Hall of Fame despite the fact their are more taelnted and influential artists more  worthy of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

For instance, Grandmaster Flash, a african american hip-hop artist, was inducted into the hall for, suppsoedly, spearheading the modern hip-hop movemnent.  Although this may be true, Faust, particualrly 71 Minutes of Faust, demonstarted the use syncopated drumming and synth guitars that allowed bands like Radiohead, Ride, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order use and further.  Clearly, Faust is more influential than Grandmaster Flash.

However, I agree that Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and The Pretenders deserve to be inducted into the hall fo fame.

Also, its about commercial visibility, thats why the only progressive/prog related bands I believe have a chance of getting into the hall are: ELP, The moody Blues, maybe Procol Harum, Genesis, Yes, Kate Bush, and Asia as much as it chagrins me to say it

Oh I see now, thanks for clearing that up.  I was wondering how and why Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Little Richard got inducted. Ermm

I went to the rock hall a few years back (only because i didnt have to pay mind you), and was terribly bored. I didn't care about most of the bands in there so I just stopped caring about it all together since then.
