Subject: Best Intro to the Tull

Let's keep in mind The Whistler's intro rules of thumb: first, no compilations. So I don't want to hear The Very Best Of or M.U. or something. Good as those are, no. Not this poll.

Second, no quintessential albums. Don't give me your Aqualungs or your Thicks as your Bricks. No. No. Just, no.

Okay, now, to the fray. I've narrowed it down to these three albums, Stand Up, Living and Bursting. There was a time (when you were so young) in which I stood solidly by Living. But now...now...I'm not so sure. Certainly it's a great album that every Tuller should own (early on at least, I'd wager), but for someone who's not up to listening to 90 minutes of music (and believe me, they DO exist), it might be a but...much.

Stand Up might be the best album. It's diverse, well performed, and GOOD. It's not an all out prog-rocker, but certainly shades of just about everything Tull would become are there.

Finally, Bursting Out. Someone suggested it as a good introduction to the band. I'm not going to disagree. Flaws might be not the absolute best lineup (which could be true of Stand Up), and not the most listenable album for the un-initiated (Living), but still, I'm not going to disagree.

I've also included "other." Maybe you think Songs or Minstrel is best. I don't know; maybe you like Under Wraps. Whatever.

Oh. And for those who skip this post and vote anyways, NO THICK, NO MU. 'Kay? Kosher.

I'd go with Bursting Out.  It serves as a sort of "best-of" collection for Tull's seventies.  Excellent material, very very well played!

Technically, Songs'd be an "other."

OK, fair enough-- in terms of best intros to presumably non-Tull fans, non-Proggies or even non-rock fans, it seems to me Songs has the best chance of getting them interested in a hard rock band whose main influence is Celtic Folk.

Alright you sourpuss, what if I changed the last option to say that the best introduction to the band would be THIS video:

perfect... if you want them to think Jethro Tull is a Spinal Tap tribute band (that's a great clip of Tull actually, but c'mon, talk about shameless elf-rock).

you've seen Spinal Tap, I assume. If not, waste no time and watch the funniest movie ever made..    STONEHENGE!

Living in the Past.

I think it is a good overview of what was and what was to come style wise (sort of) in 'By Kind Permission'

-------------

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

...WE CAN'T WORK WITH A STONEHENGE THAT'S IN DANGER OF BEING CRUSHED BY A DWARF!!!

Well maybe...maybe we could ask the dwarf to dance farther away from the Stonehenge?

(puh-leeze. Started the Moody Noobs? In case you forgot)

And elf-rock is a viable form of popular music. In fact, I'm adding that video AND that genre to the Moodies 'space page.

HEY! Elf rock is a viable source of pop music. And I'd love to see Blackmore's wife dance around my Stonehenge, if you know what I mean.

of the three....Living in the Past... for what you said..... it is the most listenable for the uninitiated which I assume.... is the purpose of the poll LOL

still.... Benefit gets micky's allegiance... always has... always will. HeartLOL

I'd rank Benefit and Songs about the same, but Stand Up will always have the edge. (The others didn't get worse, by the way; Stand Up got better.)

With Benefit, Stand Up and ,in parts, Aqualung you still have the Tull blueprint,if you will. Something that wouldn't be heard again until Minstrel IMHO.

Songs from the wood is a prog album. Prog folk

Yes.. my point was that as a prog band that mixed folk with heavy rock, perhaps Songs is a digestable version of that sound.

Most of Tulls album are prog. I think they were the best at mixing prog folk and rock.

Stand up was my first tull album and it was a great introduction, so thats my vote.

I did vote for "Other".
IMO an album like Songs From The Wood is a better introduction to JT.

But, don't get me wrong, I do like Bursting Out a lot more than Songs, but I don't think it's the best introduction to someone not familiair with JT. I mean Bursting is less representative for JT's discography.

Please can someone tell me about which review you're talking about!!
i am curious nowBig%20smile

I think the 3 albums mentioned in this poll are all  a good introduction to JT.
I voted STAND UP because this is the one i preferThumbs%20Up from them

After 30 years , just rediscovering WAR CHILD that i didn't like all those years, now i don't stop listening to it  and the bonus tracks definitely enhances the album

The 7 bonus tracks are the makings of a great prog album. Don't worry about half of the real album songs, they are just soundtrack songs for the movie remember? ;)

My introduction to the Tull was Stand Up one of their most classic contributions to the world. It was a lucky choice for me 'cause I rapidly complete my discography with the remaining records of their cathalogue!!Approve

Songs as Bourée, A New Day Yesterday, We Used to Know and Nothing Is Easy really break through!!!

It's the best studio album to start with, in my opinion.

I started with Benefit and I became a Tull fan.......  I don't know...........  Smile

From the list, Stand up. IMO livin' in the past is your favourite compilation, eh Whistler? But for me it's mostly a studio album, and it's another great place to start.

Having followed this band since their beginnings it's a hard choice between Stand Up & Living In The Past, but LITP got my vote for the variety & volume of material.
