Geddy Lee is my favourite of these. Outside of Prog, one singer/bassist I like a lot is Phil Lynnott of Thin Lizzy. A shame he died.

I vote for Greg Lake my fave voice in the list, but I prefer the skills of Lee and Squire in bass ,but Stewe can you give information about Mariusz Duda,? is he the bassist of Alogia?or a latvian bassist?

Mariusz Duda plays and sings with the Polish band Riverside, and he's a great vocalist indeed.

As to my personal preference.... As much as I love both Greg Lake and Geddy Lee (I prefer Wetton as a bassist, since I'm no great fan of his vocals), my vote would've gone to Caravan's Richard Sinclair - one of the best voices ever, and certainly no slouch on the four strings.

Geddy is the man at everything.
I mean come on, who can sing, play crazy bass, and play synth pedals at the same time, and speak fluent Yiddish, other than Geddy Lee of Rush?  Plus his bass is so growly, sometimes I'm afraid it with jump out of the music and bite me!
His voice is so awesome, It causes domain of the evil music magazine critics to explode and it makes babies convert to Rushism, where the bible is by Ayn Rand!
In the words of some guy talking about rush, geddy has "pants so tight his voice can crack nuts".

I'll vote for Mariusz Duda since no one else has voted for him.  He has a great voice and is a good bassist.

I'm not a big fan of Roger Waters as a vocalist.  I find his voice irritating at times.

A few of my favorite bass/singers are here (Wetton, Lee, Lake) but I would have voted for Mont Campbell or Richard Sinclair if they were here. For those of you who don't know, Mont Cambell is the bassist/singer of the eggcellent band Egg. Approve

Geddy Lee is perfect combination of bass and voice in one.

Phil Lynnott is my favourite from non-prog.

Greg Lake for me, as I think he's the most consistently good at both bass and vocals.  As far as I'm concerned, he's horribly underrated as a bassist.

Admittedly, I like Squire and Wetton better as bassists by a slight margin, but I like Lake's vocals better.

I have to concur about the omission of Les Claypool and Jack Bruce, though I probably would have still voted for Lake.

Tony Levin, best bassist/backing vocalist. Considering the complexity of what he has to play, and his ability to do such perfect harmonies simultaneously, I feel he deserves to be up there with the rest of them.

I voted for Wetton for his ability to play bass, sing, and deal with a young angry Fripp interupting him with loud dissonant chords.

A duh. Jeffrey.

Of these, hmm. Instinct would imply Lake. Waters is a better singer, Squire is a better player (Geddy Lee is a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better player than singer).

But it does say balanced, doesn't it? Wetton.

I voted for Wetton because he is actually getting better - singing and bass-playing - as he gets older.  If you have Paul McCartney on your list (I suppose some of the Beatles is 'proto-prog'), you really should include Peter Cetera of Chicago too (the first two Chicago albums have definite prog elements in them).  Cetera singing - and bass-playing - have always been superb, especially in the late 60s / early 70s period....

Geddy Lee is just my favorite bassist of all time, each of the songs he plays on, he adds such a special touch to that even those who don't normally even listen to the bass are immediately drawn to it.  Also, his vocals generally get a lot of flac from critics and I must say, I have never in my life found any problems with them.

Singing and playing bass [well] is one of the most challenging and difficult things to do [well]. In the studio doesn't count imo with multi tracking. The true test is in live performance. I would say that's why there are so few of them who do it [well].

Mark King of Level 42 is one of the most accomplished exponents of it I have ever heard. Richard Sinclair is also up there imo.

John Wetton: his ego is small (or so it seems) and he convinces me that he's just letting the music flow through him.  I also like his taste in his phrasing both vocally and bass-ically.  I can't recall any John Wetton moments (at least with Crimson) that make me cringe.  Whereas although I admire both of them, there have been vocal moments with Geddy Lee and Greg Lake (w/ELP) that just seem like a bad idea, or somewhat geeky.

On the contrary of a lot of singers, WETTON voice always havs improved with time like a good bottle of wine.
