Ever since I got into Tull 3 years ago I've been blown away. Luckily I got into them when the remasters were already available. I think I got the cd's in this order
thick as a brick-this is prog perfection
living in the past-kick ass heavy rock and folk with a mild prog feel. Brilliant cd
bursting out-amazing live album
heavy horses remastered-very very good folky prog, 2 nice bonus tracks too. Classic
benefit remastered-3 awesome bonus tracks and the album has several strong tunes too. Mildy heavy rock and folk style with a mild prog feel. Very good cd
songs from the wood remastered-very good folky prog with cool bonus track, almost as good as heavy horses. ALmost classic
stormwatch remastered- 4 awesome bonus tracks and the album has some pretty damn cool songs. Similar to Benefit, heavy, folky, mildly prog. Awesome cd
stand up remastered-3 awesome bonus tracks and some other cool songs on album. Phychedlic, hippish, bluesy, folky, but still that prog feel. Very good and it was only 1969
warchild remastered-7 awesome bonus tracks and some other cool songs on album. Some really proggy moments, some happy circus moments, some cool folk. Strong cd
a passion play-this is prog craziness. Some awesome moments and some silly moments, but I listened to this album for the first time on my headphones recently and it sounded awesome. Almost another prog masterpiece
A remastered-new looking band but some excellent tunes. More electric, but still that typical busy prog style with kick ass songs. What an awesome dvd too. Love this cd/dvd
dotcom remastered-some surprisingly awesome prog songs, these guys still hammer. Cool bonus track too. So much better than Yes, Rush and Crimson 90s style
roots to branches-really solid album with middle eastern feel, not far behind dotcom
aqualung remastered-some classic heavy/folky songs and some strong bonus tracks. Some great mild prog with a couple of not so great rock tunes in there, but strong cd
broadsword remastered-some kick ass tunes and some not very great tunes, but plenty of songs and enough to rate pretty cool. Some proggy moments too
Well that is what I have so far. Every one of those cd's is strong. There is about an hour of music on each of those cd's. So many excellent songs and many of them bonus songs. Each cd has 2, 3 or 4 songs that don't blow me away, but there are at least 5 songs on each cd that does blow me away. I'm so sure this band is the strongest rock band of our time. What about everyone else? Who do you rate the best band of all time?

KING CRIMSON, the best band in history.

My all-time favorite band has to be Rush.

My taste of Prog changes with the sunrise. Although Rush is my favorite, I never would rate them or any other band as the best because I know tomorrow I will feel differently. I think calling a band the best is simply subjective. There is no best.

Best 1st post ever
As for me, I'm tempted to say Radiohead. Probably in ten years or so I won't be so hesitant about it. What it comes down to, for me, is consistancy and chemistry. I'd have to say The Beatles, as cliche as it is.

I still believe Jethro Tull have made a larger number of enjoyable albums (some of them great) than any other major prog band. I love almost everything they did up to (and including) STORMWATCH. And even after 1980 they recorded at least a handful of fun albums. So if you appreciate productivity, the Tull can't be beaten.
On the other hand, I also believe that the best albums by the likes of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and a few other prog bands are more exciting, more amusing, or more deeply moving than anything the Tull ever did. So which is "the best band of all time"? Impossible to answer!

It's a close one, but I'd say ELP for the three-legged race, Gong for the egg and spoon, King Crimson for sack race and Jethro Tull the 4 by 100 relay. Yes probably make the best sandwiches, but I'd choose Genesis and Marillion for making the picnic.
Pink Floyd will be awarding the winners' trophies at 4 o'clock in the Marquee.

Queen. Constantly pushing the boundaries of rock, pop, and prog, with insightful and talented musicians. Their music is honed to perfection and can be enjoyed by the stuffiest armchair-bound, smoking jacket and mustachioed prog listeners, the football jocks driving around in their cars, the longhairs at the heavy metal club down the street, and the casual radio listeners. Truly a superb band in every sense.

I always found Genesis to be quite humurous on stage . Peter Gabriel's humour is very dry (ref: the 'bass pedal solo' quip on Genesis Live) and the stories he told between songs were great, ( quote: "I had to do something while they re-tuned the 36 strings on their guitars"), whereas Phil Collins would play the cheeky cock-a-nee chap routine to good effect. I also think that there were just as many puns in Genesis lyrics as there were in Tull's (but not as many as in Caravan's )
Anywho, I don't think there is such a beast as the greatest band of all time. All of the bands mentions thus far are viable candidates, but none would gain enough "votes" to win outright.

The Beatles... AND HERE'S WHY! Nobody has anything on the Beatles. They did everything before everyone else. Look at the White Album alone. They covered Metal with Helter Skelter, musique concrete with Revolution #9, and OH so much more. Sgt. Pepper is always cited as the most important album in rock history. For sheer influence and all-around grasp of music itself, its near impossible to beat the Beatles.
But this is not to say they are my favorite band. I, like many others, feel its an impossible question.

TAAB is the most exciting album I've ever heard. I prefer Heavy horses and A over albums such as Relayer, GFTO, Nursery crime and SEBTP. Once you listen to the first 5 minutes of gates of delirium you can skip to the next song, because that 5 minutes of noisy synths sounds like a band running out of song writing ideas trying to fill out an album. Soon is kind of dull to my ears too. Yes were best with Bruford

Not even the great Gods of prog/music will be able to decide this 'meaning of life' type question [who'ere those Gods may be], so it all comes down to personal assessments.
TULL are certainly one of the greatest and are still going. IA is a legend, no more no less. Yeah, BEATLES, everyone knows the arguments, boring as they may be. FLOYD, right up there, we all know why, KC etc.
But for me it's THE ENORMOUS CREATURE OF QUIET AND HONOURABLE DISPOSITION , aka GENTLE GIANT. Challenging, original and second to none in musicianship. How great thou art.

Hey mr. Schizoid, you forget to include that AC/DC are quite the greedy b*****ds... They have managed to make their fans pay hundreds of dollars... FOR THE SAME ALBUM RECORDED LIKE 13 TIMES! AC/DC is just the best example of "know one, know them all"...
Anyway, you get lost in all this rubbish... None has mentioned Los Del Rio yet.... Anda tu cuerpo alegria macarena que tu cuerpo pa bailar la alegria es cosa buena.... ehhh Macarena....I'd also go with the ladies that sung asereje, ja, de je, de jebe du de jubi ande buididipi...
... Sorry, I got a moment out of this planet... Well, back on earth, I'd say Spin Doctors...

it has to be either Rush or Pink Floyd..
Rush, cause from 2112 to the first side of Grace Under Pressure ALL songs are flawless..
Pink Floyd cause DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall are simply the best albums ever and Roger Waters is the greatest persona ever...

It changes quite a lot of the time...
Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band might be among my all time favourites. Trout Mask Replica is... Wow. They've always been on my top 5, so to speak.
King Crimson is the father of the genre, in my opinion, and I've
always held most of their albums dearly to my heart. The horrendous
80's trilogy of albums drags KC down a bit though.

I really don't know which I would consider the BEST of all time, but according to the RIAA it would be The Beatles based on total records sales . Come to think of it, I would tend to agree with The Beatles. They seem to be the grandfather of multiple different musical styles, and even (arguably) prog rock...

There is no such thing as the 'best" band, because the rating of art is all a matter of personal taste and the listener's life history and personality, but in many crucial respects, the Beatles were the most important / influential pop/rock act of the 20th century.
(Obviously, I'm far from alone in this conviction.)
Judging by many of the responses thus far, it seems that in this context, "best" simply means "personal favourite." What are the objective, measurable criteria we're to use to establish this "best?" (There aren't any -- again, it simply equates to "your current favourite.") I don't even have a "favourite" band. i like too many diverse artists, eras and forms of music to pick just one. I like many things roughly the same amount as i do others. (Thus I have more than just one five-star review.)
I'm sorry, but frankly, I find the entire "best" concept to be a rather juvenile way of thinking about art, and woefully overdone here.

I can't say, it's too subjective of a question. There were important bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin (neither of which I listen to often but for which I have great respect) but can they be called the "best" bands of all time? And best can be interpreted in many different ways.
I can say that my favorite band is Porcupine Tree, but I wouldn't call them the best of all time....

I think "personal favorite" is what is generally meant when people ask the question. No need to take it so literally/technically. Although my dad did used to say that Zeppelin was his favorite but Rush was the best. Or it was the other way around. *shrug*
And as my friend has said about the Beatles: "Thanks for starting everything and all that, but everyone after you was just better."

man! what a hard subject. i could'nt decide. theres so much out there still for me to get my ears around. at the moment i would say either dream theater, pain of salvation, watch tower, opeth, symphony x, faith no more, genesis, king krimson, hendrix or pink floyd. somewhere around that maybe. but the thing that allways holds me back from saying my faviourite band is the fact that they all have bad songs in there somewhere. no matter how amazing everything is for me, i could never say my all time favourite band is until i fill my inner most demands on the "perfect" band.
but, thats just my opinion.....

|
Because you want an argument:
HOW CAN YOU LIKE AC/DC!?!?! THE worst band in the history of rock music. I dont even consider it music. They're just a bunch of drunk cavemen trying to make the simplest music they can to make it on radio! Debrewguy - Ghandi, by the time that AC/DC made it to radio, they'd already hit the big time. So it wasn't a case of them trying to make it on radio, but just radio seeing a group that draws "ears" to their station - you know, like playing music that many (seemingly not you) people love. As far as simple music, well ... if you ask the Young bros., they'd probably go - DUH ! It's rock n roll, man. They believe Chuck Berry got it right & perfect. Oh, and for the worse band in history, they've managed to fool quite a lot of us into buying their albums - 90 million in the U.S. alone. Can you say "who cares for you" ?
0 talent, none what so ever. Retards, hitting, strumming and headbanging thats all I see. I have never heard a single drum beat with any fills, and oly one bassline that was okay, AC/DC is the worst excuse for a rock n roll group of all time!
debrewguy - again, silly names being spouted while their fans go on rocking & having fun. Worldwide, that means over 120 million plus albums sold. Oh, and we can't hear you, 'cause we're screaming "Highway to Hell" along with Brian Johnston. The purpose of the drum beat in rock n roll is to keep the beat. The bassline is the foundation. Please do not confuse the noodling necessary for some "prog" music as being needed for all other types of music.
So to end, you have your opinion. But why the nastiness ? Is it because your fave bands cannot compete with a group that has a successful career of close to forty years & still manages to generate massive enthusiasm for their music ? If so, please remember, we don't need to force anyone to listen to AC/DC ... unless they want to have a good time, you know like ... enjoying life & felling ALIVE !
AND THE SINGER TURNED AND HE SAID TO THE CROWD LET THERE BE ROCK !
