He has already been sugested but no moderator payed attention it seems. I just listened to 'illinois' and it is hugely prog. What do you think?

I've heard of the name before, but I haven't listened to any of his music. What genre do you think he might fit in? There are some things you can do to speed up the addition: 1. PM a member of the genre you would like to see the artists get added. 2. Give some myspace samples or other kind of samples that would be helpful for evaluation to the members of the team 3. Write a biography. All of these 3 things are helpful for us to evaluate a band/artists and it will definitely speed up the addition process.  -------------

Pigeon-holing Sufjan Stevens as "indie" doesn't really help much, as the term doesn't really mean anything in itself (as far as musical styles are concerned), does it? On to the topic then... Stevens' brand of artsy folk-pop (that's how I see it anyway) is definitely interesting, and Illinois was one of the best albums of 2005 imo, but I would be hesitant to label him as prog. But then again, The Decemberists are already here...   -------------

I would think he would be prog folk, because he writes ambitious folk/rock music with unconventional time signatures and song structures. -------------

For what it's worth AMG have Progressive Folk as one of the styles for Sufjan Stevens' work.
I have only heard a handful of tracks that have come from some magazine piggy-back CD's. There are some progressive elements here and there.

I happened to catch a show on Public Access TV with him and his group performing, Very impressive. Is he prog?, I'll leave that opinion up to the experts.

I have a bit of difficulty seeing Sufjan as prog folk. He's a very eclectic singer-songwriter with astute commercial sensibilities and clever gimmicks like annual Christmas albums and tribute records to U.S. states, but there's no continuous body of work that points to him being dedicated to developing himself as a folk act. The guy makes great music and I wouldn't see him as out-of-place here, but IMHO he meets the definition for Prog-related. Sufjan Stevens could fit in somewhere, it'd be cool to have him on the site I reckon. even more so in terms of indie singer/songwriters Andrew Bird, his new album is wicked. |

I agree.Prog Related would be more apt. Sufyan Stevens is too eclectic to be put into Prog Folk. Just because he quite often uses an acoustic guitar accompanyment doesn't make him Prog Folk. -------------
