I'm wondering why the Canadian band, Miriodor, gets so few mentions on this site.

They are listed as an RIO/avant band, but they are nowhere near as dissonant or weird as bands like Thinking Plague and Henry Cow.    If you think of those little off-beat  interludes that most prog bands insert into their music, in between their more straight-forward rockier sections,  and if you can imagine whole albums of these sections strung together one after the other, you have Miriodor.     A fantastically entertaining band, constantly changing and inventive, with many different arrangements and textures, executed with great precision and expertise.

Does anyone else love this much underated band?

I have just started delving into RIO and Avant Prog and Miriodor is one of the "gems" I have discovered.I only have Jongleries Elastiques but it's a fantastic album. What would you recommend for my next Miriodor purchase?

Another band with a similar style I am really digging right now is Hamster Theatre, awesome stuff too.

I had Jongleries Élastiques and Mekano, but neither album managed to interest me. I felt I'd heard it all before, and that these guys were doing what they did just for the sake of showing off or something.

I did however like the Miriodor side-project Rouge Ciel's eponymous album very much.

Next one should be Mekano. Awesome band - like them a lot - have all their albums and to me they are one of the best in the genre of more accessible RIO/avant

Their latest one, "Parade", is also execellent.   It is a double disk - one studio, one live. Both terrific.

Yeah, Hamster Theatre is definitely a band I want to explore.   The reviews I've seen look very promising.

I don't see them as show-offs.    To me, they are a band that likes to have fun with a serious form of music.    They are similar to Samla Mammas Manna in that regard - except not as goofy.   Smile

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Underrated? Make it unknown, first time I heard from them!

Miriodor's Mekano-album has been on my wishlist for a couple of years now, but it is kinda hard to get your hands on. This particular record has been described as Canterbury-influenced, which is why it interests me. Thumbs up for anybody, who can shed light on that - is it worth to hunt after as a Canterbury scene fan??

Damn Right! I've loved this band forever; in fact I'm going to buy Jongleries Élastiques right now! French TV and Birdsongs of the Mesazoic are two stylistically similar bands that also deserve more recognition.  These are bands doing some absolutely fine and original music as qualitatively excellent as any prog from any era.

Brilliant band, at least from what I've heard from them. I'll look for some of their albums soon.

Pretty much every band classified as RIO is at the very least "seriously underrated."

I haven't heard Mekano yet, but their music generally does have some overlap with the Canterbury scene.    A more intellectual, less jazzy form of Canterbury, if you like.  Perhaps the closest Canterbury band would be National Health.

Having said that, there is a lot of feeling and atmosphere in their music - which, for me,  is what elevates their music above the standard clever RIO material.

It's a personal thing I think. I had listened to nothing but Avant-Prog for a couple of months upon first hearing Miriodor, I had "overdosed" on stuff like that, might be why I didn't like them. I can understand your opinion though. I might give them another chance if I get the opportunity. Smile

Please do! I'm sure you'll like it. And if you manage to get hold of their other album, please tell me how it compares to the self-titled!

This is Miriodor at the Montreal Prog.Fest last september. Again, Miriodor will come to play for us at this festival. I am glad that this group can be known as far away as Australia, and Finland. Actually, I did not know Miriodor's music until I saw them playing live last year. What a great performance with great music, many different and interesting instruments  ( flute, violin etc...), and many variation in their music. What I remember the most is a piece called: Le mille-pattes. ( the carterpillar). Big%20smile

Great band, I wish I could see them live one of these days maybe at the RIO festival next year...

BTW looks like the guitarist has a Gibson SG with a 'Les Paul' neck

Well, a few weeks have now passed and I continue to be blown away by this band.   They have become one of those rare bands which have completely taken over my soul, making every other band seem hollow and second-rate in comparison.  I love it when that happens, which, admittedly, isn't very often.   For me, the last time was Opeth a few years ago, and then before that Ozric Tentacles in 1998.   Before that Gentle Giant in the early 90’s …. .

I've tried several times in the past week to write a post explaining why I have come to like Miriodor so much, but every time I've tried to do so I've wanted to abandon the whole project and envelop myself in the music instead.   Writing suddenly becomes a distraction from the heavenly music delights on offer.   How can anything else compete! But I've finally managed to summon up the will to break away from their spell for a time and jot down a few of my thoughts.

The more I listen to this band, the less they seem to fit into the RIO-mold.    I really don’t think RIO is an appropriate category for them.   They are too melodic, too groovy, too flowing, too purposeful, too much in tune with traditional musical values to be considered RIO.   In my view, their nearest relatives are Gentle Giant and Gryphon (Red Queen-era), and perhaps after that, Univers Zero (Uzed-era).   I have noticed that Gentle Giant have recently been slotted into Eclectic Prog category on this site and that is perhaps where Miriodor also belongs.   But in truth, as with the very best bands, their music transcends all categories and is ultimately unclassifiable.

The first thing that one notices is that Miriodor have that contrapuntal, fugue-like thing happening which Gentle Giant displayed in abundance in their more complex works.  Often there are four or five instruments weaving their own separate melodies to form an intricate tapestry, often interacting with each other in a speedy, nimble call and response.  The skill with which they do this can be dizzying at times.   Sometimes it is hard to fathom what is going on, although never does the music descend into a chaotic mess, or degenerate into experimentalism for experimentalism's sake.   The composing and the playing is always first-rate, always disciplined and interesting, always moving along with great purpose.

Nearly all of their music is of this style – grooving along in a fugue-like manner – and constantly changing into different themes, melodies, instrumental arrangements, textures, and atmospheres.   Incorporated within this basic framework are all sorts of different genres – sometimes it sounds medieval (resembling Gryphon), sometimes Red-era King Crimson (dark, powerful passages), sometimes European folk, sometimes 20th century classical, sometimes jazz, sometimes contemplative minimalism, sometimes pure prog rock.

What is amazing is that even though it is constantly transitioning from one disparate theme to another, the music never sounds forced or contrived.  The band is able to incorporate all of these diverging styles of music into an integrated whole, such that their albums flow along seamlessly, never jarring, each passage a logical continuation of the previous one.

I really think this band would appeal to those who love those mid-era Gentle Giant, particularly pieces like “Knots”, “Experience”, “On Reflection”, “Proclamation”, “So Sincere”, etc.  If you can imagine Gentle Giant, minus the vocals, concentrating purely on the cerebral side of their music, with some King Crimsonish freak-outs inserted into the proceedings every now and then, you would have something resembling Miriodor.    I'm sure that Kerry Minnear would have greatly enjoyed being a part of this band.

This is mature, sophisticated, expertly-played, beautifully recorded prog rock.  The band has an intimate understanding of the core principles of prog rock and have fashioned something fresh and unique out of it.     The music is subtle and rich and gets better and better with each listening..   Even after numerous listens to their albums (I’ve still only heard “Elastic Juggling” and “Parade”), I’m still trying to work out what is going on in many of the passages, such is the skill of the composing.   Miriodor is a band which delights me both on a cerebral and an emotional level.    I’m very glad to have discovered them.

Bump:

I just picked up Parade + Live at Nearfest this weekend as an impulse purchase.  I had seen the Miriodor name mentioned on PA from time to time, and when I saw this CD in the record store I figured it was time to take a chance and check them out.  So far I have only listened to the first 4 songs and they are quite good.  The above post describes it well.

I'd love to see them put out  a DVD.   It would be fun to see their musical interplay in action.   A new album would be nice too!!

In the Wayside mailorder update it says this about their upcoming 2009 release:
MIRIODOR-Avanti! (May, 2009! sooner than you think. Maybe)

That's all I know...

Bernard Falaise's (Miriodor's guitarist) Clic from last year was a criminally overlooked album.

You must implore them to do everything they can to put out a DVD.   I live in Australia and have next to no chance of seeing them live, and I'm sure there are many others in my position as well.   There are also future fans to think about.

Seriously, it will be a criminal waste if they don't document one of their performances on video.
