I went searching for this topic...and couldn't find it. Could it be that there never has been a thread similar to this in the past? Anyway, my biggest ones are:

1. When a reviewer gives an album 3 stars (or more) yet states in the review that the album is poor.
2. Poor grammar in general, but particularly the lower case "i".
3. Any review that rates songs individually, and then calculates the average.

How 'bout yous?

But anyway...
I f**king HATE when someone rates a well-loved album by some band that he/she doesn't like, rates it one star and says that the album is absolutely bad... therefore coming off as an arrogant snob who puts him/herself above the all of those who like the band and the album, basically saying that all who rated the album well are wrong and everyone who likes the band has an inferior taste than His/Her Majesty. I hate that.

Well that's what the 2 stars option is for, right? 3 stars is for good (but not essential) and 1 star is for poor.

micky's five star hatchet job of that classic Dream Theater album. it was well written but makes a mockery of the score system - giving five to an album you can't stand is insane in the membrane and confuses me much more than someone giving one star to a classic, seeing as I do it myself ;P

For me, it's more like this

5  - more than a mere masterpiece
4  - a masterpiece, or near so
3 - very good to good
2 - decent to bad
1 - dreadful

That means that 2 is the tricky one, as it has the biggest range.

Every person thinks different, i am one of those who have reviewed good albums and graded them with 2 stars, a couple of examples that i remember:

Aspirant Sunrise by Rick Wakeman, i really like that album believe me it is pretty good a 3-star album without a doubt in a "music" site, but since we are in ProgArchives, and the album is new age and nothing to do with prog, i imagine people are looking for Wakemanīs symphonic and proggiest albums, so this is not for you then, just for fans.

Pablo Honey by Radiohead: I have always been a follower of them, this album is not my favorite and probably their worst, but that doesnīt mean that i donīt like it or donīt enjoy it, i do like Pablo Honey but again, this is not progressive at all and probably people wont be interested on it, so 2 stars just for fans, maybe 3 stars in other rock site.

I know somewhere I wrote "What can I say that hasn't already been said..." It was one of my early reviews and I've been looking for it as I revise some of my early reviews. It was probably CTTE or ITCOTCK or something with 4-600 reviews. I don't think it's so bad for people who don't like a band/sub-genre to review, but only if they present their reservations intelligently. I can't stand the ones that blast fans of the band for being "fools" and calling albums overrated.

that's a similar system to the one I use.... I personally hate giving less than 3 stars for an album (which you'd see if you clicked on my reviews) as I almost feel its disrespectful to the band... and I think I have only awarded the dreaded 1 star on 5 occasions, when the bands concerned really ought to have known better....Embarrassed

I give out too many 5 star reviews, but I always do my best to justify them. I tend to bend the criteria to include albums that aren't quite masterpieces, but they are better than four stars. I really wish we had half stars.

Why do some reviewers make the first thing they write the band name and album name?  All that is already on the top of the review.

Review by Knucklehead
../Collaborators.asp?id=15614 -
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

A fine album but needs more accordian.  Blah, blah, blah.
