This is just an appreciation thread I wanted to start for this absolutely brilliant album:
 This is the best music I have heard in a while. I am listening to new stuff all of the time, but this absolutely BLEW me away. The most amazing stuff I have ever heard, out of nowhere!
Leonardo Sasso = AMAZING voice. The musicianship on this album as well, pure brilliance.
I believe that Forse le lucciole non si amano di piu is one of if not the most beautiful, soul catching song ever written. Unbelievable! Thank you PA for sharing the information abut this insanely good band. -------------  "Only the sun knew why"

Can you reccommend anything very close to it?
I have alot of PFM, Le Orme, Banco and all the other italian prog stuff...but there is nothing quite as epic as this anywhere! ------------- "Only the sun knew why"

Well, make sure you've heard Alusa Fallax, Apoteosi, RRR, QVL, Reale Academia. They are older than Locanda so not as polished production, but all are fabulous. Also, given the sound of that one, you might appreciate Gotic's "Escenes" from Spain. Very nice pastoral instrumental rock. Good luck! ------------- |

Actually, I have several suggestions. Corte Dei Miracoli is excellent. Genfuoco "Dentro l'Invisibile" might be a good choice. And you should definitely check out Nuova Era "Il Passo del Soldato." I am assuming you have heard about La Maschera Di Cera. It's a bit on the darker side, but good nonetheless. You also might want to start looking into some South/Central American prog, and stuff from Spain. ------------- a.k.a. I'll second some of the good suggestions from Finnforest and bhikkhu:
La Maschera di Cera have a very 'epic' sound, very much like the legends Banco, PFM, etc
Quella Vecchia Locanda (QVL) - I think you'll really like QVL, alternating between hard rock and flute-driven classical inspired compositions.
Celeste - very calm and laid back...I take it you're a Moodies fan, then you may like the loads of mellotron and majestic melodies here.
Apoteosi - another peaceful one, this time with gorgeous female vocals, somewhere between Renaissance and PFM.
I Giganti - Terra en Bocca...one of the earliest 'true-progressive' albums from Italy...very folky and loaded with mellotron and quality melodies
It it's "epic" you want, you could try the New Trolls Concerto Grosso trilogy if you haven't already...a fusion of rock with classic that works far more often than not.

| Another great, new Italian prog band are Ubi Maior from Milan, who are completing the recording the follow-up to their 2005 debut, "Nostos". Their CD can be ordered from BTF ( http://www.btf.italy - www.btf.italy ). They are definitely on the symphonic side of things, though slightly darker in sound than bands like Locanda delle Fate or Celeste. |

| ^^seconded...I finally got around to giving Ubi Maior a good listen and it's excellent (I posted some thoughts in the RPI thread). I wouldn't necessarily put them in the same boat as LDF, but they have a unique twist on the vintage sound that is very dramatic and, well...progressive! |

Locanda are great, no doubt. And Forse Le Lucciole... is one of the greatest album in Italy's prog tradition. One of my favourite for sure. Great, emotional and quasi-baritonal vocals, excellent musiciaship (with the famous double keyboardist line up). Excellent production and sound. There are no similar bands and albums, that's for my experience. But if you want to search for other great works from the same year (1977) I suggest Riccardo Zappa's Celestion: short, wonderful, original and completely different.

yep, very original and emotional  I also like their drummer's style a lot, he's so fiery!Just listen to "A Volte...", this is easily my favouritest instrumental track ever recorded!!! |
