I was just curious about this. I would be glad to know your favorite bands also.
My favorite prog metal bands:
Vanden Plas and Dream Theater.

Oh man, I'm so tempted to say something about metalheads' intelligence, but I'll refrain.

No brain, I'm an idiot who just escaped from the mental ward.

smart in some ways (innovated , perceptive , very creative)  but dumb in other ways (managing money and unwise life choices) all in all I'd say I`m leaning towards average  oh well at least I'm mostly happy thats the main thing

A little bit ahead of the bunch but I can be lazy.  When I get motivated though, I can do anything.  Slightly above average.

Bands I like (metal-wise):
Opeth, PoS, PT (thought not truly metal), Planet X (again not fully metal), and some other stuff.  Used to like stuff like SX and DT, but not much anymore.

I think I just vote for 'above average.'
Progheads are not an average audience by all means.
Prog-metal freaks are somewhat different. I think many metal bands tend to borrow the prog elements so that they could sound different. Also, prog elements pave the way to showcase great skills in each respective instrument, which is what metal heads love to see anyway. So, instead of 'genius', I think we're just above average here.

What???!!!??!?!!

I'm not sure I like the implication of this Poll. You appear to be trying to find a correlation betwix liking Progressive Metal and Intelligence, whether you are attempting to proove an assumption or dispell a stereotype is unclear, but either way it would be mildly insulting if we were not intelligent enough to rise above it. My IQ, (if you are wondering what that may possibly be, then you can ponder away to your hearts content for I will not be disclosing any figures here or giving any indication within your poll-selections as to what it may pertain to), has very little to do with my liking of music from any genre you care to imagine. However, Prog-Metal roolz and Vanden Plas are grate.

I STRONGLY disagree. You may not have the same impression if you stick to browsing this site exclusively, as the posters here are generally sufficiently mature as long as they are not messing around (don't look at me!) or come here drunk (erm), however, the spectre of the Prog-Metal genre/subgenre is so broad and covers so many themes, moods and even fads that it's impossible to put all of its listeners into one single box.

On PA you are likely to meet grown up men, listeners of various kinds of Prog, who have found interesting Prog-Metal bands and some younger Metal afficionados to whom the subgenre is the most important aspect of Prog as a musical category. But what we will never realize posting here is that there are Indie kids who also are supposed to be called Prog-Metal fans once they decide Isis and the like are the greatest thing since sliced bread, countless mainstream Prog-Metal fans who besides Opeth, Symphony X and Dream Theater have their main interest concentrated elsewhere, usually in either classic or contemporary rock, etc. etc.

It all depends on the community you find these people at. Arcturus fans on PA will seem more intelligent than the fans of the same band on a video game site.

In a similar way, a progressively thinking Prog-Metal aficionado will be flabbergasted to find himself in a mosh pit during a concert when he is trying to subtly enjoy the sophisticated sounds, however, both the "mosher" and the "intelligent" listener would essentially both be fans of the genre.

voted average... well educated.. but stupid not to have used  it

like Opeth a hell of a lot along with getting heavy into Mastodon. I generally like what I heard.... just  particularly dislike one group in particular. Generally I like prog metal that is more prog... old school prog... shifting dynamics..  a collage of sounds and instruments..  than just brute complexity.  Any monkey can play  complex metal music with enough practice... it takes an arist to make art.

Member of MENSA (saddos organisation for those with a high IQ) and apparently officially a genius in their view - all that proves is that I can do IQ tests. I passed Maths/Further Maths A level at 16, both at grade A (in the same maths class as Tony Banks at Charterhouse School) but I don't think that makes me a prodigy.

Still can't do my tax returns on my own, though and I've never finished a Times crossword in my life, but I'm s**t hot at Sudoku! I can take ANYTHING to bits and guarantee not to be able to put it back together again, so perhaps a big chunk of me is "no brain".

So I'll settle for "above average".

What's your average time for the "hard" sudoku puzzles at www.websudoku.com? I'm still struggling to solve them below 15 minutes ...

btw: voted "above average" for myself as well ... my degree in computer science (grade 1.6 - which I guess is something like an A-) supports this theory.Wink

I like heaviness in my prog and a little darkness, but a little bit goes a long way.  There's a lot to be said for beautiful and light (never lite) stuff.  Ultimately, one needs to broaden their horizons.   It's the diversity that makes prog music great.

Asking people to rate their own intelligence is just asking for skewed results. I'll say "above average" as I'm putting in minimal effort in school and still making great progress toward a college degree. Then again... I'm a psychology major which seems to be mostly common sense to me (at least in the undergraduate phase) and there may be some debate about the current state of education in the U.S., so who knows?

Favorite prog-metal bands: Opeth, Atheist, Death, Tool

A poll about members' "sizes" won't be much more biased than this.

Yeah, I'll call myself above average, but at least I have a 4.0 GPA for 2 years in a row.

I voted above average as I have 2 degrees.  I like my metal to be used with care.  Blanket metal is about much good as smacking your head against a brick wall.
