I was involved in inadvertantly threadjacking the baseball thread yesterday with a discussion about hockey. With the NHL season starting this week I thought that it might be appropriate to start an NHL thread.
I realized that at the least most United States citizens are apathetic towards hockey, especially after the owner lockout from a couple of years ago, but I figured that there might be enough Canadians on the board to get some good discussions going on.
Let everyone know your thoughts on this upcoming season. Let's try and keep the comments positive. We wouldn't want to give anyone any game misconducts for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Go Wings!!!!!!

I'm a Flyers fan. I'm going to try to pay attention to hockey this year, it was hard last year since the Flyers were awful. But I think the outlook is OK for them this year, I think they have a shot at the playoffs, though I won't set my expectations too high since they have a lot to prove before making the playoffs.

Being in the Western Conference, the Wings don't get to see teams like the Flyers more than once a year; either here or there. I think that it is horrible that the Red Wings only see the Maple Leafs, Bruins, Rangers, and Canadiens once a year. I wasn't around for the original six, but it seems somewhat sacrilege that the only original six team the Red Wings play regularly is the Black Hawks.
Good luck to the Flyers this year. I am not sure who is on their roster. I assume that Derian Hatcher is still there. He gave us one decent season.

Darn, the Wings got hosed by the refs in tonight's game against the Black Hawks. They led 3-1 and had a power play. Pavel Datsyuk scored about the easiest rebound goal your ever going to see but it didn't could because the referee lost sight of the puck. At no time did Khabibulin have any control of the puck so the ref had no business blowing the whistle. Chicago ended up scoring a short-handed goal during that same power play and later tied the score and then won on a shootout. It is way too early in the season to make much of a difference and they shouldn't have let the Black Hawks back in the game anyhow, but their just should not be that bad of a blown call at the NHL level. Alright, rant over.

Oh yeah, just noticed they dumped the Isles tonight. Shouldn't be too surprising though, they have the talented youngsters (Ovechkin) and signed some experience this Summer. I think they're good enough to take their weak division.

Cool; another Wings fan. I only watched pieces of the game last night, but they looked pretty good against Edmonton with a 4-2 win. This is a good thing since Edmonton is one of the teams that has given them fits in previous years.

I'm hoping the Wings pick up a power-forward with some size. They tend to get a bit beat up in the playoffs.

Bertuzzi was that grocery list item last year but didn't help out as much as hoped. Of course, now that he is on Anaheim, that makes it even more imperative that the Wings get someone like him. It will be interesting to see who they will pick up. I think that goaltending is a bit of a question mark too. I'm not sure how long Hasek will be able to hold up. Fingers crossed he will make it through the season injury free.

Bertuzzi was never really healthy last year either. I'm sure he's in much better form now.
Hasek... his health scares me for the long haul and Osgood is not someone I'd be secure to follow. Osgood only got a SC ring because of how good the RW's defense was that year. I was hoping the Wings coulda scored Giggy or Toskala... Keeping my fingers crossed for the Dominator.

Montrealer here, BIG Canadiens fan, all I can say is that this year's edition is quite "enigmatic". I think the Habs will be a wild card this season. Souray is out, replaced by Hamrlik ; he doesn't have Souray's powerful shot, but he is a MUCH better defenseman, I think he hasn't had a season in the minuses in 10 years. Plekanec and Higgins are still developing, but at great speed, Kovalev must want to play every game, and what about Huet and Price ?
I think they'll end up in the top 5 of their division, easily.

#2?!?!?
I went to Game 3 vs. your #1 last season. Sadly, the last one the Sharks won in the series/season. I am annoyed that the game on Sunday against the Avs was indicative of the same flat footed D play that the put up against the Wings in games 4-6 and the last 35 minutes of game 2.

I definitely miss the old Red Wings/Canadien rivalry. Alright, at the time it wasn't much of a rivalry because the Canadiens were the NY Yankees of the NHL and the Wings were the proverbial doormat, but still those were good times. Now that the Wings and Canadiens only play once a year, I really don't know too much about them. Don't see too many games until playoff time, accept for the odd times here and there when I tune in for Hockey Night in Canada.

Its Hockey, may i reapeat HOCKEY, this is the sport for the loud and violent, and thats why I love it.
Now for actual discussion,
I love the avs (being in colorado you dont really have a choice) and this year we have a rellitivly good team, its just a shame that we traded Abbicher away, he was a great golie and was doing a good job of filling Roy's shoes, but now all we have is secont rate golies that are dragging the team down.
Point being I have decided that the golie is the backbone of the team, without an amazing golie you lose, opinions anyone?

I think that the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils fans would all agree with you. Of course it helps if you also have an 80 goal scorer and an a**hole defenseman, AKA Pronger, or in our case Chelios, although he has lost a step or 3. A big goon power forward to stand in front of the net is also a great asset.

thats my point, right now we have evrything EXCEPT a good golie, people kept hyping theodor up, and recently we have been using a golie brought up from the minors and to be completly honest he has done just as good of a job, its pathetic

There are a lot of teams that would be extremely happy to have Peter Budaj in net right now. I don't think you have much to worry about in goal unless he gets injured.

Are you sure that over the course of the 82 games season, the east and west teams only neet once a year??? It sounds more reasonable to say twice (once home and away). There was a time when there were 21 teams and they had a balanced schedule (they played every team 4 times) and I thought this was best and fairest.
Being of Canadian roots, obviously I root for Canadian teams, even if throughout the years, they dwindled (Winipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques) in the last decade: there used to be 7 teams out of 21 that were Canadian and now, there's only 6 out of some 30. Too bad they're thrown into two divisions too instead of spread out over the four.
I prefer the Habs (Canadiens), but recently (last three years) the Senators have been a pleasant surprise . Although I lived in Toronto the Leafs were never my fave team, but I still root for them too!
Out West, obviously the Oilers, the Canucks and the Flames get my votes.

^ Yes. Each team plays the teams in their division 8 times each; the rest of the teams in their conference 3 or 4 times each; and then the teams in the other conference once (and I want to say that there are actually some teams in the other conference that they don't even play but I could be wrong there). The NHL created this uneven schedule in the hopes of creating good divisional rivalries. From a standings standpoint this has been great for the Red Wings, but from a rivalry standpoint not so much. Instead of playing the Maple Leafs, Canadians, Bruins and Rangers (4 of the original 6) the Red Wings have 8 games each with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, and the Nashville Predators. Chicago and St. Louis were good rivals when they were good, but neither has been good in a number of years. Columbus has never been good, and Nashville has only been good for the past couple of years. A good rivalry is slowly developing with Nashville, but that is about it.

Correct, prior to the lockout, most inter-conference games were played home-away split, with occasional scheduling anomalies. Now its supposed to drive rivalries, but some classic rivalries have suffered.

Looking at the diferent divisions
ATLANTIC
NY ISLANDERS
PHILADELPHIA
NY RANGERS
NEW JERSEY
PITTSBURGH
This one seems like it's a natural cut-out, except for maybe Pittsburgh which is hardly in thgat area >> should swap with Washington or Boston to make more sense. Newest team is NJ built in the 80's. Three others are from the 60's.
NORTHEAST
OTTAWA
MONTREAL
TORONTO
BOSTON
BUFFALO
This one makes a bit of sense as well. Probably would've made more sense with Boston in Atlantic had the Quebec Nordiques not moved to Denver. >> almost all my faves are in this one ('cause i also like the Bruins >> Bill Bruford I guess)
Only new team is the Senators (one of the newest), and three historical team.
SOUTHEAST
TAMPA BAY
WASHINGTON
CAROLINA
FLORIDA
ATLANTA
This one I can't stand! With only Washington as a semi-historical team as well (even if Atlanta did have a team during the 70's that moved to Calgary). I don't know how any historical fan can actually feel for these teams only built out of money >> too hot cities to really host a hockey team. f**k, I'm not even sure I know the names of most of these teams.
CENTRAL
DETROIT
COLUMBUS
NASHVILLE
ST LOUIS
CHICAGO
The second historical division with two originals and one of the 60's Nashville should be swaped with the Capitals or Pittsburgh
NORTHWEST
MINNESOTA
COLORADO
EDMONTON
VANCOUVER
CALGARY
This division had two WHA expansion team if I remember well (Winnipeg Jets and Oilers) but no team is older than the Canucks (and to a lesser extent the Calgary team: ex-Atlanta>> both 60's. The Minnesota teams is not the one from the 60's either.
PACIFIC
SAN JOSE
ANAHEIM
DALLAS
PHOENIX LOS ANGELES
Another division I fail to see why fans would care for. Only two 60's teams (Dallas is ex-minnesota). Again outside LA team (since the 60's and they almost went under before Gretzky saved them), none are natural hockey cities. f**k, I'm not even sure I know the names of most of these teams.

Ugh, what's with a couple of Flyers landing dirty hits and getting suspended? First that idiot Steve Downie leaves the ice to check Dean McAmmond in the head (he got 20 games but I think he should get more), now Jesse Boulerice (spelling?) cross-checks someone in the face?
In case some of you missed that Downie hit it the preseason, here it is to get an idea of how dirty it was:

Hope so. I've read that Daniel Briere was offered more money by Montreal, but chose Philly instead. Seems the rumour is that players aren't crazy about the higher taxes & school system in Quebec. It's a shame, 'cause with Gainey at the helm & Gillette as owner, they are intent on restoring this hallowed franchise to its' rightful place among the top tier in the NHL. P.S. same story last year with Shanahan. Took less money to go to Rangers.

Well, as a Montreal fan, I can say that I am glad that Theodore had a rather suspect entourage while in Habsville . They traded him before the NHL downsized the goalie equipment. And while the Habs only had Abby for a short time, he did do the job as well as could be expected. And Montreal looks like a genius with Jose's current level of play. I'm hoping that Price turns out to be the New Patrick Roy. Huet could be a very coveted veteran goalie come mid season. So if Gainey thinks Price can carry them, Huet might be great trade bait to help the Habs fill a need or two, like extra scoring. I think the defense will do fine, with Mark Streit being given more of a spotlight. Markov seems ready for a career year, and his play hopefully will make folks forget about Souray's supposed impact on the team. Great shot, but defensively ????

Unfortunately, I missed all of the scoring as I didn't get out of work until late last night. I caught the last couple of minutes and then the post game highlights and interviews. The Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom may very well be the best line in the NHL. Babcock is faced with the dilemma of keeping Datsyuk-Zetterberg together and having one great line, or splitting them up and having two good lines.

There was a lot of talk last year regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins moving to Kansas City where they have a brand new arena eagerly awaiting a team. The debate was then which team would move from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference. Of course, us in Detroit felt that it should be us so we wouldn't have to have so much travel out West and that we could renew our rivalries with the other 4 original six. But I think that either or both Columbus and Nashville might actually be further east than Detroit so we would have probably lost that bid. All for naught anyhow since Pittsburgh agreed to build the Penguins a new rink.

I was always a big Sergei Samsonov fan so I would pull for the Bruins to do well. He started his professional career starring for the minor league Detroit Vipers in their inaugural season. When he signed with the Bruins I found a Samsonov poster in a Bruins uniform which I still have hanging on the back of a door. I believe he is playing for the BlackHawks now, but I won''t be pulling for them any time soon.

Well, the Wings had another goal taken away by the officials again yesterday and they lost another game by 1 goal to the BlackHawks. 2 Goals in 2 Games in 2 Weeks. The NHL must be handicapping their games now. I was eating dinner at a restaurant/bar so I just saw bits of the play and really can't state an opinion. Tomas Holmstrom knocked the goal in the net and the next time I looked up he was sitting in the penalty box. I suppose he took his usual 5 or 6 cross checks and slashes and then got called for goaltender's interference for interfering with the Goalie's stick. Oh well. Also funny, Robert Lang has scored two goals this season and both are against the Wings. I think that the goal last night went through Dominik Hasek he shot it so hard.

(sigh) Well now the Flyers have two players suspended this year for at least 20 games. I really hope nothing like those two hits happen again this year, because it's overshadowing how well the Flyers are doing right now....

Let's all hope so , too. But I figure you'll have a few more. And hopefully the league will keep cracking down until the point is understood before someone gets killed.

I don't think that I even knew that he was in Montreal last year. I suppose I might have seen that somewhere along the way. Never seeing the Eastern Conference teams, I kind of lose track to where some of these guys are playing.

Well, I almost shudder to say this, but I'm a long-suffering BlackHawks fan. <ducks>
Probably the only team in pro sports that doesn't televise its home games, except on rare occasions.
They are starting out pretty well this year so far, beating the Red Wings twice, which is twice as much as they usually beat them.
Things have to get better, with the new regime in place after the owner's demise. They just have to get better.
After all, how much worse could it get? One of the Original Six sinking to such depths?
The last time they won the Cup I was nine years old. Unreal.

The Ducks really handed it to the Red Wings last night. It was the Stanley Cup playoffs all over again. I am really not too big of a fan of Bryan Rafalski. He scored a goal yesterday, but he had a major gaffe on the blueline with the score tied 3-3 and the Wings on a power play. He let the puck get by him and the Ducks were off to the races for a short-handed goal.
The referees certainly made some quite progressive music blowing their whistles throughout the entire game. I know Anaheim had at least 11 power plays and I think the Wings had a similar amount. Most of the early goals were scored on 5 on 3 power plays. Holmstrom had 5 penalties by himself. This guy gets absolutely raped in front of the net, then Pronger the idiot falls down and Holmstrom gets a penalty for it. Absolutely ridiculous the crap he has to put up with.

Well with the passing of owner Wirtz, maybe there's hope that the exec suite will step into the modern age. God only knows they've had a number of great players go through their ranks in the past decade.

The Wings beat the Sharks 4-2 last night. Good to beat one of their West Coast nemesis on the road. These West Coast games are too hard for me to stay up for. I fell asleep after the 1st period with the Sharks leading 1-0, so it was good to wake up and see that the Wings won.

I hope this doesn't continue for the Sharks. I had a feeling when they basically did nothing to sure up their flat-footed D in the off-season. Let Hannan go but keep Errorhoff, way to go. There was a point last night with 2 minutes left where the 2 Sharks d-men and one of the forwards watch the puck roll between them at the top of the left circle. So a Wing skates from the blueline in between them and slaps a shot in. Not only that, but I don't think they had more consecutive tape to tape passes than 3 all night.
Its like having the playoff Sharks play the regular season.

Yeah, and best of all , no player facing suspension for goon behaviour. The joke with the guys I play ball hockey with, is that the Flyers are going to start calling us up to fill their ranks.

The Red Wings are out west again for the 2nd time in this first month of the season. I just turned it on to catch Jiri Hudler scoring a goal in the final minute of the 2nd period to give the Wings a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, I won't be awake to catch the end of this one. Go Wings!!!!!!!

The Red Wings are off to an awesome start for the first quarter of the season. They have 14 wins, 5 losses, and 1 shootout loss. The problem is that 4 of their 6 losses are against the Chicago Black Hawks. Tonight is the annual pre-Thanksgiving game. Kind of like the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, you can always mark the night before Thanksgiving as a home game for the Red Wings.

I just returned from the Red Wings game. They beat the Los Angeles Kings 6 to 2. It was a pretty awesome game. They were still playing pretty hard in the 3rd period after it was 6 to 2 so it at least kept it somewhat interesting til the end. The Wings now have 53 points, which is 6 points better than the Ottawa Senators for the best record in the league. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean too much, they will still need to win in the playoffs to make it all worth while, but at least they are making the regular season enjoyable. They have to turn around and fly out to St. Louis for a game tomorrow night. Go Wings!!! Keep up the good work.

That's cool. My parents are flying in from Florida for the holidays but they're not getting in until Christmas Eve. The Wings don't play at home again until New Year's Eve and my parents are heading back that afternoon so I won't get the change to bring my dad to a game. He used to bring me to quite a few games when I was a kid, but now that he is in Florida he hasn't been to a game in quite a long time. I did call him today though to ask if he wanted to go tonight, but alas he said he didn't think he'd make it back in time.

The Red Wings just shut out the St. Louis Blues 5 - 0 in St. Louis. Quite an accomplishment given they started their "Backup" goalie (alright so it is Chris Osgood who could start on 20 other teams) and their top two goal scorers Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom are out with injuries.
Next up is a visit to Avalanche country. I believe it will be the first meeting of the year for these two teams. It'll be interesting to see if the rivalry still exists.

The Wings-Avs game was a decent game last night. They were saying that the Avs have been on a terror the last 10 games and that they have the best home record to start the season in their team's history. Last night's game did nothing to endear Brian Rafalski to me. Although that was a beautiful tape to tape pass to the Avalanche's 1st goal scorer. If the Avs continue to play well the rivalry could be renewed. Although it is definitely a shame that Sakic is going to be out for the next 12 weeks after hernia surgery. He is one of the last remaining from the heated rivalry years.

Good Wings-Avs game the other night. Wings won 1-0. Sounds like a soccer score. Chris Chelios became the second oldest player in league history, but also only the 2nd oldest player in Red Wings history, since the top honor goes to Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.
I am off to see the Wings play the Minnesota Wild tonight. Hopefully, it will be a good game. I want to say that the Wings beat them 5 or 6 to nothing earlier in the season.

Red Wings' goalie Chris Osgood was named to the all-star game yesterday. Then last night him and the Red Wings proceeded to play the game like it was an All-Star game playing the Minnesota Wild to a 5-5 tie. Don't usually see that many goals in a game unless it is an All-Star game (although I suppose in the All-Star game, that many goals is usually scored in a period). The Wings ended up losing 2 goals to 1 in the shootout so that was a bummer, but it was still a heck of a game to be in attendance at.
To tie it in to music a bit, at the beginning of the game the Red Wings come out on the ice to the new song from Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. I vaguely remember reading that he had a new album out and that Axl Rose contributes on a couple of songs. Certainly not prog, but a slight connection since Sebastian does sing on a Frameshift album which is prog.

So does anybody have the Versus channel or plan on watching the All Star game festivities this weekend. Are any proggers who live in Georgia planning on attending the festivities in Atlanta? I generally watch it every year. Baseball has my favorite all-star events (I attended all of the festivities 2 years ago when it was here in Detroit), but Hockey has probably my second favorite all-star events. The games are pretty tame but it is nice to see what the nices passes and speed of the best players without all the grabbing and clutching that slows down the game during real games.

Ouch!!! 4 in a row. Dan Cleary is out for the remainder of the season with a broken jaw. He took a puck to the face on Saturday. Hasek is starting to get the aches and pains of an old guy. And Osgood is playing like a guy who just signed a 3 year contract and has no reason to be motivated. Still not too concerned, but I hate to see them pick up too many bad habits.

That was quite a disappointment. Just last week Forsberg's agent announced that because of his injury Forsberg had decided not to play in the NHL this year. There were some rumors that he might sign with the Wings, but there would have been something terribly wrong about that. (But not as wrong as if Claude Lemieux had signed with the Wings. I just shudder at the thought). The Avs will be much stronger with all those guys back. The Wings roster is looking a lot like the Grand Rapids Griffins lately. Hopefully, we start getting some of our defensemen back soon. The top 4 have been out injured.

I saw that the Avs got Foote back. He is only a step below Lemieux and Roy in the Avs players that we like to dislike here in Detroit. There were some rumors that the Wings might get Fedorov back but he ended up traded to the Capitals. So far the Wings have stood pat, other than resigning Darren McCarty, who hasn't done anything in a couple of years but will hopefully add some toughness up front. There has been some rumors about Mats Sundin joining the Swiss brigade here, but he "doesn't believe in rental players" so he is staying in Toronto.

Claude Lemieux couldn't play at the NHL level even when he was in the NHL, he was just the most hated player in Hockeytown because of his asinine and cowardly check which rearranged Kris Draper's face, and the best he could do was act like a turtle when Darren McCarty kicked his ass.
