Iron Maiden have made many songs with stories in them. Steve Harris is one heck of a song writer I must say. Add Bruce Dickinson's style of singing and music becomes alive in you. His style and delivery makes me feel like I'm one of the characters in the story being told.I admire Harris' themes and his play of words. But one thing that really impressed me are his stories. Topics ranging from a prophetic son, flying a war plane, gun duels, death sentenced criminal amongst many others. So what are your favorites? Here's my top 5:

All great songs that you have listed. I think that Rime of the Ancient Mariner is probably my favorite. Others not on your list that I really enjoy are The Duellists, The Flight of Icarus, and Two Minutes to Midnight. -------------

Personally, I'd also like to mention some of their more recent songs, namely "Dance of Death" and "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" - the first relating a dream had by Steve Harris, the second about Hiroshima's bombing in 1945. Ah, and of course the mighty "The Number of the Beast"... |

Alexander the Great! I think Iron Maiden has a knack of painting pictures with there music that brings you right there. I feel like I am traveling with Alexander's army through Mesopotamia conquering Persians along the way.
Metal (classic) in general is very good at program styled music and storytelling. Growing up I was disappointed a lot with Prog having great titles for their tunes but not following with the music sounding anywhere remotely like the theme the title suggests (Rick Wakeman comes to mind). I think the point of atmosphere is sometimes lost in the look at me playing of Prog. I like worlds I can play in (music is an abstract to facilitate my thoughts and not just a reaction to manipulated sound) and Iron Maiden create those for me. Therefore for me Iron Maiden is the most intellectually stimulating band on this site (King Crimson and Pink Floyd aslo enter that arena.) |

nice topic MM I would have to go with Alexander the Great because of my origin... it's clearly emotional in this case but Rime... is also a great tale |
