I had my popup blocker off, after a FireFox update, and a tab loaded with some "Check Your PC for Malware" I didn't ask it to download anything and it did anyway. That is a Firefox problem. But the file it downloaded from this Malware site contained a trojan. Good thing for antivirus. Anyone see something like this happen?

I had my popup blocker ON and it's happened to me TWICE, but only by going onto PA ....I x'd it out before it could fully download the file but still what the hell. Also, I have the popup- blocker that "allegedly" blocks all the ads on PA and it did for a week, and now they're back and its still on

I got a window that said to download a spyware checker and I hit cancel but it brought up a new window anyway, then I exited out of that and a third window with the one option "OK" came up. I used my antivirus and spyware programs and found nothing though.... Oddly enough, the same thing happened to me twice (and my brother once) when I was trying to access mlb.com and couple weeks ago.

I've been getting this as well. (I am on a mac, also. Mac users cannot make the dangerous assumption that they are free from viruses and spyware.) I noticed it after a pram reset where the date goes back to 1969 and it fouls up the router. It happened a second time after forcing the date back and forth, but not a third time and it has happened under normal browsing conditions, so not too consistent.
Then I thought it might actually be a legitimate ad from a PA sponsor, something that happens when your connection to the website is slower than normal or shows data interruptions, giving the sponsor an opportunity to offer their ware to fix the potential trouble. Is it possible?

This is what I use at home, so I have no problems there. Unfortunately, I also log in to PA at work (in my lunch hour, obviously) and there I have a locked down version of IE and I can't have ad blockers or anything similar. At the moment I can't risk using PA at work just in case something dodgy gets through the virus checker and I get the sack.

I've gotten this pop-up three times from this site, and two other times on the main page it was about to switch to a different site but I closed the window before it happened. I hope this is fixed soon.
Also (for what it's worth) I'd like to say again that this is not the only site I've seen this malware/spyware/whatever pop-up occur, a few weeks ago, I got it twice on mlb.com, but I haven't seen it since there.

It offers a Yes/No/More info selection option.

I've been getting these EVERYTIME I log in.......... for about 2 weeks, I use pop-up blockers but the darn thing just gets around them.
I closes all other windows or apps running and has scared the heebiejeeebies outta me, which is why I have been laying low, I try to log in every couple of days of so to see if it is gone yet..........
Yesterday I logged into the forums ok, but when I tried to pop back to the archives up it came.
Ad's do not other me at all lie I have said before, but this is worrying!
Not all PA users are as technically minded and aware as others (me being one of the dunces!) and this kind of thing is pretty scary, it's ok say you need to run blah blah blah, but I have NO IDEA what you are talking about, and if I need to fiddle with my computer that much just to use PA I wont bother.......... I should imagine there are a lot of folk out there that will feel the same!
Sorry!

According to the IT chaps where I work (which is where I usually log on from) this is completely harmless - irritating, yes, but harmless. Logged in from home last night & Norton picked it up & disposed of it tout-suite
M@X on to it now, so hopefully should go soon - in fact, thinking about it, I don't remember it happeining this morning...

But it's not an ad, it's a forced redirect to a malicious website. It may not actually be a trojan, but it is intrusive and forces me to re-open IE because hitting the back button doesn't work.
Man-Erg, the worm could easily have been from an email or from someone directly attack your computer.
This is really terrible. I just got it so it's not gone yet.

Today after browsing these forums and getting the malware redirect I noticed a bit of odd behaviour. After some investigation I realized my DNS server had changed, where previous sessions it hadn't. This could potentially have real bad results, meaning instead of my provider's DNS server pointing me to the proper servers, I am sending requests to a rogue server pointing me to all sorts of badness.
I am not sure if that specific malware site was responsible for the redirect since I was browsing other places, but I will have to keep checking in. I am curious if anyone else here had a change in dns.
I won't bore you with a bunch of techy info but in general you should:
Check your router or ISP for the official DNS addresses
Compare that with the DNS address on your machine
Change it if needed and take any precautionary measures.
If anyone needs elaboration I will certainly do my best to help.

Well since yesterday morning's post here just 23 short hours ago, this is the first time I have been able to even get as far as the forums. It is more than annoying, it stops me getting here, I just cannot get passed the damn thing.
whether it's actually seriously bad news, or just an annoying obstacle is imaterial surely, if it stops people coming, if it makes people nervous about the using the site is it really doing us any favours?

Just had the scanner2 Malware one, the full URL is:

I've tried tracking it back to find out how it attaches itself to the PA page, but with no luck so far.

I confirm this problem as well. It started some 10 days ago or so. When I get it, I close the PA window immediately. Usually, after I restart, I don't get straight away. But when I relaunch PA later on (or if I want to get several PA sections at the same time) it reappears regularly.
I have this at home, but as well at the office where we have firewall, virus detectors etc.
Please address this problem accordingly. It is a real P.I.T.A.
Regards,
Daniel.

No, it appears to be random - I've seen it in the Grey Room, Song Word Game and various other threads and on those specific pages I don't recall seeing the same forum members, so dont' think it's sig-related. Also if you reload that page the malware doesn't reappear. This is one of the reasons why I'm having problems tracking it down - I cannot at the moment see where or how it attaches to the forum code.

good question
I cannot remember if I've seen it on Site pages, but obviously I visit forum pages more - I also tend to visit the site from the forum first, and then move on to the Archive.
Also, the comment ZowieZiggy made about it re-appearing if you revisit the site after a break. I did find a cookie attached to the malware-URL which may explain that. I deleted it, so cannot pass you a copy.

This is almost the first time I've loked at the forums (being a new member) and it's been happening to me for some time. It usually happens when I'm in the Archive and I do the first search. I then close IE down using task manager and it doesn't happen again when I start over.
Has anyone anything more on it possibly changing the DNS address. I tried to check that but my ISP states they use a dynamic DNS (whatever that means)
|
Posted By: BardsGarden
Date Posted: December 06 2007 at 22:40
If you can get into your router, compare the dns settings on the router to the dns settings on your computer. (if your provider is using dynamic dns you can still do the comparison, just know that the numbers can change whenever the router is rebooted) If the dns on the computer and router are not the same it may have been compromised, but don't freak yet since there are other reasons for the dns to be different. Just write down the odd addresses so you can check them out later, then manually change your dns address back to what it should be in your network settings.

Here are some links explaining what happens and some suggestions to stop it. One or more ads on the site intermittently spawns other ads. This is extra tricky since it spawns automatically as the page is loading where normally you have to click on a specific ad to start the spawning.

If I leave and come back later before switching off my PC it's not coming up again.
Although I'm no expert on these things I get the impression this is more of a nusiance thing than anything that's going to cause serious damage to anyone's PC. My Norton Anti-virus picks it up imediately and get's rid of it but on my other PC that has AVG anti-virus it doesn't recognise it as a virus and doesn't pick it up at all.

A Cautionary Tale:
I run AVG and have been attempting to back-track this Malware as it is a challenge that is bugging me, and to help rid the site of it. It is something I do 'professionally' since understanding how these things attach helps me solve them quicker in the future. Unfortunately I (and AVG) failed big-time - something corrupted some of my system files and I could not recover them. I have had to rebuild my operating system from scratch. Nothing critical lost as I regularily back-up important stuff, but it is a pain in the butt as I now have to re-install every item of software I use and then recover the back-up data - all these things take time I'd rather spend on other things.
If you close the Explorer window immediatley the Malware appears you will be okay, but if you are a wise fool like me and try and delve deeper into how it attaches then there is a serious risk involved. I take all precautions possible when doing this and I still got caught, so be careful out there

Thanks for the warning. Nothing seems to be amiss on my PC using AVG at the moment and I haven't opened the malware programme there but just to be on the safe side I think I'll stick to using my Laptop with Norton Anti-Virus when I visit here for now.
Can you explain why Norton picks it up as a Virus whilst AVG does not? Is it because AVG is inferior in some way though I have heard good reports about them.

Bad news, I can't remove the banner ads because the website wont' survive, the high cost of web hosting.
This Ads Network show ads that I don't control. I would like to remove them but I need a new revenue source to help the site.
Some ads : Google AdSense, Amazon, Ebay , are under my control and I assure you that they don't
How about we become a Social-financing website based on a members / visitors DONATION. Once we reach a certain amount we remove the third party ad-server ?
I will need help to build that ...
Let me know.
Other solutions are welcome

I think maybe a PayPal donation system could work. Obviously not everyone is with PayPal, so maybe some additional donation method could be used as well.

Oh Yes, many times! I just press cancel cancel cancel and then close the window...and then I'm out of PA, but I can start it again and then it doesn't appear. But the site it redirects me to is: http://www.schijfbewaker.com - www.schijfbewaker.com . The initial culprid though seems to be http://newbieadguide.com/statsg.php?u=23423424&campaign=remain0r - http://newbieadguide.com/statsg.php?u=23423424&campaign=remain0r
So it also happens outside of UK and America, since I'm from the Netherlands

As I wrote in another thread, in the past few days I've come across an Italian malware site called ToolSicuro ( http://toolsicuro.com - http://toolsicuro.com ), which Italian PC users have been warned against in several IT discussion boards over the web. Of course, after having removed the cookie and cleaned the temporary Internet files, there has been no disturbance at all.

The website I posted at the top of this page, mentions that newbieadguide website and I believe it has some solutions as to how to solve it. It may help anyhow.
The quicker we rid the site of it, the better.

I have no problem with the legitimate ads- I use them from time to time, yet I wouldn't mind a paypal donation either. M@x you have every right to go to the ad broker and lodge a complaint, with all your members I would say you have a bit of leverage. The broker probably has one or two dog advertisers responsible for the malware and may not even realize it, I can't imagine this broker wants a bad rap. After enough surfing there are lots of sites suffering the same fate, they probably have a common broker. If you get other sites involved it can impact them even more.

I havent had this in a while (I just jinxed myself I suppose) but it's not a legitimate ad, its a hijacking virus that can infect and damage your computer it seems

Paypal donation idea is a great one to get rid of these malicious problem causing adds its worth approx by estimation about $400 a month thats how much other sites who do donations get, you maybe will get more because we all love prog and want to see this site remain .. I dont want a Trojan (who does) I feel at risk just being here now. please do something as I dont want to have to reformat my pc again so soon.

mailto:M@x - M@x has taken steps to eradicate the recent Malware incident which affected us. We were by no means the only major site to be affected, it was sophisticated attack on the Internet. More information on it can be found here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/13/doubleclick_distributes_malware/ - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/13/doubleclick_distributes_malware/

Yes. It's happened twice and has seriously f**ked up my computer. Whenever I read the forum now I get a message from a good friend of mine (through msn chat/hotmail) with the same passage I have just read on (any given) forum:
aki の発言: I took a screenshot of my pc, do you know what this error is? aki の送信: 承諾(Alt+C) 名前を付けて保存...(Alt+S) 辞退(Alt+D)
Aki can't speak or type a word of English and this is the 100th plus time this has happened. The above says 'aki says...' and 'aki sends you...'' and then I always get an option to download something. I called Aki the last time this happened and she wasn't even using her computer then.
Sorry guys. I'm not best pleased.
