I am in a situation where I like this girl a lot, but she doesnt like me. I need some albums that reflect these feelings. They dont have to be progressive at all, just quiet, and depressing like some singer/songwriter thing possibly. Thanks

Can't go wrong with Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane and Perfect Element Pt. 1.

Fish-era Marillion is good for relationship troubles, IMO, but Brave is depressing too,

Yes. Can't do better than that.

VDGG come close though. Another great band that has written songs that fit exactly what I feel. Perhaps H To He...or Still Life tp begin.

Peter Hammill also fits the bill.

I agree with the Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane recommendation. That's about the best you can do.

If I may say a select few songs,

Dream Theater - "Space-Dye Vest"
U2 - "One"
Queen - "Too Much Love Can Kill You"
Porcupine Tree - "Trains"

Skip the singer/songwriter style, go with:

Univers Zero - Heresie
Shub Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite
Present - Triskaidekaphobie
Fantômas - Delerium Cordia

and of course, Scott Walker's two latest!

You need Leonard Cohen. Badly.  Also, "collapse the light into earth" by Porcupine tree and "La Rossa" by VDGG.
But really, you should get some Leonard Cohen. Especially "Songs of Love and Hate", it is dark. Dark. Not even Bj's dark chamber prog recommendations can measure up to the darkness of Leonard Cohen when he really gets down to it.

if you wanna try post-rock (might be a stretch), f#a#infinity is one of the most desolate albums ever recorded. In fact, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (with the exception of parts on Lift your Skinny Fists) is a pretty bleak band across the board.

pelican - australasia

Completly instrumental metal, and it depresses the hell out of me for some reason. Lots of repetition, minor chords, ect.

Edit: NIN - The Downward Spiral. That was my preteen angst album, and it still kicks me.

Blackfield would do some really good things for you.
Anatema's Alternative 4 and Judgement can bring you to tears if you connect with it.

Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun is their most melancholic out of the whole catalogue.

The ultimate will definately be 'Remedy Lane' by Pain of Salvation, one of the most emotional albums of all time.

well perhaps the lyrics express that, but Over is overall a bea-u-ti-ful album, doesn't depress me - and I'm not saying it couldn't be some disturbing, sad, dramatic or cold pieces in there, I just mean it doesn't make me depressed.

Brothers In Arms/Love Over Gold - Dire Straits have some amazingly bleak moments, though those are interspersed with uplifting tunes. Perhaps some of Ulver's post-rock efforts would be worth checking out. The Doors can be pretty depressing for more than one reason.

Even though sounds  unhealthy in your situation, try some Cat Stevens.

Tea for the Tillerman: Songs like Sad Lisa or hard Headed Woman will really bring you down

Now if you are really a masochist, go with Lady Darvanville, from the album Mona Bone Jakon, you can't get anything more depressive.

I think Fish (with Marillion or solo) has to be prog rock's number one choice for songs about crappy relationships.  Long Cold Day, springs particularly to mind.

Otherwise you could try the Cure, and cheer yourself up afterwards by laughing at Bob Smith's haircut.

Or some of Jackson Browne's earlier stuff - Album 'The Pretender'.

You've got to consider L.A. Woman by The Doors, with tracks like 'The End' - featured in Apocolypse Now how can it be beaten? Lyrics like "I've been down so very damn long, that it looks like up for me......" well worth a listen. Also contains 'Riders On The Storm so worth it for that alone.Seriously though  this album should be in everyone's collection, a true classic.

If you unterstood italian, I'd higly suggest you to listen albums like Tutti morimmo a stento or Storia di un impiegato by Fabrizio De André (the GENIUS among italian most glorious songwriters, truly a poet)...
but I'll stick to english...
-Happy Sad by Tim Buckley
-Songs of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen (it's the only one I can reccomend you by him since it's the only one I've got Wink)
-Five leaves left by Nick Drake
-Blood on the tracks by Bob Dylan
I guess this are quite good for your situation...

What you really need, is "Now is the Happiest Time of Your Life", and "Good Morning", by Daevid Allen. (Great Gongy folk, an incurably optimistic singer/songwriter). Then, all cheered up, as you inevitably shall be, go out and find a girl with more taste! Good luck Smile.

Unfortunately, it is really hard to apreciate happy music when you are down, and a line like "now is the happiest time of your life" will only make you feel worse because you can't have as fun as you should. No, i say go Cohen. It is the only true way.

When my friend was wallowing in self-pity he put Jennifer Rush's The Power of Love on repeat play. It was pretty depressing for everyone who witnessed it.

If it's cathartic prog you need, try The Final Cut. It's Pink Floyd's bleakest album.

Otherwise, try Zappa's Broken Hearts Are for Assholes, forget her and move on.

On the topic of Collins material, I'd have to say 'the roof is leaking' is the most depressing...
The A Perfect Circle track "Gravity" is pretty enveloping... in fact; the entire 13th Step quite a depressing shade of grey, but very beautifully constructed at the same time...
not prog at all - but the Testament track "return to serenity" puts me in a hole...

I think King's X guitarist Ty Tabor's solo album "Safety" would be the perfect depressing album (is that an oxymoron).  It was written shortly following his divorce.  Most of the songs deal with either the depression or the anger caused by the divorce.  Songs titles like "Missing Love", "Funeral" and "Anger" are quite appropriate.

The chorus from Missing Love "I'm Missing Love, Missing Love In My Life, Missing You, Missing You in my life, MIssing Love, Missing Love in My Life, Missing You".

The chorus from Funeral "But Lately My Life is a Funeral.  Who'll Save Me? My Life's a Perpetual Funeral. My Life's A Funeral".

IMO, the most depressing album of all time is either, F#A# (infinity) by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, OR
Dirt/Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains, particularly the later. It has some of the most depressive, self destructive, helpless lyrics ever written, sang to the saddest most minor keyed music ever played.

EDIT - actually anything by AiC really, listen to the songs,
Nutshell,
Frogs, possibly the best of the these for your purpose
Over Now
Rotten Apple
Dirt

I don't think anyone have mentioned this one, so i'll do it for them.
"The Boatman's Call" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is a pretty dark and melancholy, but most of all beautiful and thoughtful album. Try the song "Into my Arms" (it's on youtube) and if you don't like it, you arguably have no pulse.

maybe that's why it was my favourite album and AIC was my favourite band for a while, I just have a natural inclination towards depressing music. I hadn't even thought of that when thinking of depressing albums, but now that I actually do think about it, AIC is really depressing and hopeless.

Listening to any AIC, and in particular Dirt, is pretty eerie now in hindsight. I wonder if everyone in Layne's life--friends, family, etc.--saw the cry for help that especially that album seemed to be. I'll bet it's hard for them to listen to some AIC music in light of what became of Layne. But I'll agree, Alice In Chains, to me, represents some of the most genuinely bleak and hopeless music ever recorded, and I love it.

I see L.A. Woman, that's good. "Love Her Madly," "Been Down So Long," "Cars Hiss Past My Window," "Hyacinth House," "Riders on the Storm," all shall suffice. The Wall also fits the pattern, Floyd at their best and most depressing.

But no one's mentioned Minstrel! Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery is all real downbeat (it's about Ian divorcing his wife), and it helped me through some tough times.

Well Shub-Niggurath are both, so I guess it beats Univers Zero easily. Wink

Don't forget Present either, of course.

Yep, you need some Anathema.

I'd also recommend The Butterfly Effect, and their Imago album. They sound a bit like Dredge ... not prog rock, but still good.

yes i was just about to mention this band, as mnay pople forgot about them.

ulver's newest, "Shadows of the Sun", may just be the most depressing album I've ever heard. Definitely one of them.
Shadows of the Sun is the physical embodiment of sad

I agree. I love it. Although I love others more. Still. I love it.

Highly recommended for those who want depressing music.

Another recommendation would be Pink Floyd's "Echoes"...not the rest of the album so much, but when I used to get depressed a lot "Echoes" was a track I spun very regularly.

Not a fan of depressing music myself, but I can tell Burzum's Filosofem is a great and very depressing album (and atmospheric too!):

I highly recommend that one!

That's probably the best example of "ambient black metal" i've heard. i agree that it's great.

With all these recommendations this dude is seriously gonna think about killing himself. Shouldn't he try happier moody songs? At least your gonna notice it's gonna make you feel a little better even though it still hurts.

Eh these suggestions aren't just for "that guy"...I, and many other people who have posted here like depressing music as well, and here's a thread for them to look in!

At any rate, I doubt this guy'll get but a very few (probably the first few) of the suggestions mentioned. the others I think were more for the sake of the thread.

At any rate, I listen to LOADS of depressing music (hardly anything but) and I'm perfectly content...so who knows?

Also, when I AM depressed, happy music just makes it worse. I need something introspective and darker to soothe me--something to relate to, not wish for. But that's my take: Yes is the worst possible band to listen to when depressed in my experience, Ulver and Radiohead are two of the best.

But who knows for sure? Everyone's wires are arranged quite differently.

EDIT: Also, Nice avatar d00d.

Good point, I was just making a suggestion to make this guy feel "better". But just like you said everyone's wires are arranged differently. But even I listen to depressing music all the time (well not all the time, but most of the time) and even my favorite bands come from this background so I guess it's up to how the persons wires are arranged.OuchAnd thanks.Thumbs%20Up

^^^Yeah...

I'm not sure why, but I definitely tend to go in for "depressing" music waaaay more than other types of music.

It just gives me more breathing room, more room to think, and to expand...to introspect and whatnot.

I just enjoy it more.

Not to say I don't like happier music, I just don't "prefer" it I'd say.

Well I dunno. But I'd have to agree it does give you the space to think which is a good thing unless you think of the wrongs thingsOuch. But hey it's just life.

Still Life by Perry Blake (acoustic trip hop)
Alternative 4 by Anathema
From the Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos
Out of Myself by Riverside
I am a Bird now by Antony and the Johnsons (this one is really really sad)
And for someting heavier, I'd say any album from My Dying Bride ;)

The ultimate depressing album has to be Berlin by Lou Reed. His best mind you.
