I'm looking to learn about some unfamiliar bands.  Hopefully, this is a thread that can keep on giving.  I have listed 25 bands whose names are at least somewhat food-related.  I am going to create a second thread with 25 additional bands.  Most sub-genres are covered so there is a little something for everyone to talk about.  Most of these bands are rarely discussed within the general threads and rarely show up in polls, but hopefully somebody out there knows things about these bands that they would like to share.  Multiple votes are allowed, so feel free to talk about as many bands that you are familiar with.  I hope that you all have a hardy appetitie for some (mostly) lesser known prog bands.

Thanks and hopefully have fun and learn something new along with me.

Very cool poll with some excellent bands as well. BONDAGE FRUIT's first 2 are brilliant in my opinion, while THE MUFFINS would be my second pick. I do like FRUITCAKE from Norway too.

On this list I've listened to Egg and Magic Pie.

Egg was one of Dave Stewart's first bands.  It's a trio consisting of Stewart on keys, Mont Campbell on bass, and Clive Brooks on drums.  Originally the band was called Uriel and featured Steve Hillage on guitar; he left the band to attend university and the trio continued on changing their name to Egg.  I only have their album "The Polite Force" and it's quite good, though a little difficult to digest at times - it's more psychedelic than the later bands with which Stewart was involved (Hatfield & the North and National Health).

Magic Pie is a neo-symph band from Sweden, I believe.  They've put out a couple albums which I both have, although I don't find myself as enamored with them as I first did when I got "Motions of Desire".  They can be a little heavy at times.

Good idea for a poll... I know quite a number of these bands.  I like Bondage Fruit, Cherry Five, Egg, Gravy Train, and the Muffins considerably (I can't easily choose between them... I suppose that it would ultimately be between Bondage Fruit and Egg).  There are some others that I've been meaning to check out more.

The first that sprang to my mind is not on the list, though, Moving Gelatine Plates.

I voted for After Dinner, a band who make beautifully different music. I believe avestin made a thread about them and used one of my cringe-worthy reviews to pad it out. o:) They're listed in avant but their music certainly isn't jazz note hell; I didn't emphasize this strongly enough in my review but what you most get is cabaret, electronica and old musical forms such as marches, all with a neat, peculiarly indie-fied twist.

Haco can really sing, too. =)

I was bound to miss at least one while scrolling through the lists.  I have seen some posts in the past that talked about Moving Gelatine Plates.  I think that it was around the time that they were added to PA.  I don't think that I have heard them mentioned too much since then though.

Here is a link to Avestin's thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=42620&KW=Moving+gelatine&PN=1 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=42620&KW=Moving+gelatine&PN=1

I know that either or both Bald Friede and Bald Jean recently started a thread that talked about Egg being the least known of the long-lived bands. Edit: That was Embryo, not Egg.

It's a very good band, and I grew to love Moving Gelatine Plates, but like I said in a couple of posts in that link, it originally failed to move me much.  It left me a little cold, and Gelatine Plates are dishes best served warm.  It really warmed on me.  Grew to love it.

Lots of wonderful choices on the list, and a great idea for polls (I'd like to see more themes being done in polls as a way of really introducing people to music that need not be similar, but won't be accused of  being a case of "apples and oranges"... to continue with the food theme).

Amongst the most scrumptious things about a poll such as this is that there's something for every taste.  It's a veritable feast for the ears.

LOL

So is Electric Tangerine, Electric Fruit, Electric Fruitcake, Electric Apple, Electric Cherry, and Electric Banana.  Would you settle for Electric Orange (I see you've responded to a Tangerine Dream poll, was that your fruity pick)?

I think there may be a case for Electric Apricot's inclusion in the archives, but not until Spinal Tap gets in.  Gotta love Primus...

Out of this list, I know Cherry Five (very good, if you can get past the lame English vocals), Egg (egg-cellentLOL!), and Lord of Mushrooms (not my cup of tea at all). I'd be interested in learning about most of those bands, though - their names make me hungry, and their music makes me curious.

I was trying to stick to bands that were all included on PA, therefore excluding a band such as the Smashing Pumpkins, who have been mentioned as a possible candidate, but are probably too well known as an alternative band.

Some other bands that I considered but didn't include were Fig Leaf, Frogg Cafe, Lard Free, Lobster Newberg, Blue Oyster Cult, Oysterhead, Pent**ter, and Peter Pan (a brand of peanut butter).  Even though I didn't include them, feel free to discuss these bands too. Smile

There is a German band named Apfelkuchen. (Apple Pie).

And something that just came to my mind as a bad joke: How about Cannibal Corpse? Dead

Here is a link to a thread that ProgJester had created concerning Apple Pie prior to their inclusion on PA.  I found this to have some interesting insight into the band. And I like Spock's Beard, so this sounds like Apple Pie might be quite tasty.

I wonder just what kind of 'shrooms the Lord of Mushrooms lords over.  Magical ones, perhaps.

I've always like this quote from an article:

"But with Haco, it's not so much what she sings, but how she sings it. Björk has often been credited with bringing the voice to the fore of pop music as a musical instrument; Haco, however, beat her to it by a decade." :P http://www.japanimprov.com/haco/writings/japantimes.html - http://www.japanimprov.com/haco/writings/japantimes.html

Bit o' a tie between: Egg, After Dinner and The Muffins, for me. I'll probably add a second vote to After Dinner... heads off to stick on one of their discs.

I found another one that I missed.  When I was going through the list I saw Gazpacho, and I thought it was a Spanish food of some sort, but then I forgot to list them.  Just double checked and it is the name of a Spanish soup.  The band is from Norway though, so I assume that they just like a good Spanish soup.  So Gazpacho is another band that fits the theme of this thread and is open for discussion if anyone cares to give their two pesos.

These threads got pushed to the second page way too quickly.  Come on folks there are a lot of obscure bands on these threads that can be discussed.  Certainly there are more of you out there with knowledge on some of these bands and I'm sure there are more fans then me that would like to be the beneficiaries of your knowledge.  Besides it took a lot of work for me to go through the archives to come up with the list, I can't let these threads go to that dark and dreary graveyard of threads that quickly. Wink

I found this old thread that was started about Eggroll.  It appears that there are links to cover songs that the band did of Genesis tracks.  I'm not sure if the links still work or not.  I also read Ivan's review of their album which was released a couple of years after this thread.  It appears that their album would appeal to those like me who like doses of light prog.  Anyhow, in case anyone is interested in checking out Eggroll (hopefully the links work) here is the thread.  If you read all the way through you can see how much fun the old members used to have with threads, and maybe some of the old timers will be able to reminisce over such great memories.

The links that are on that thread are in Hebrew, which my computer doesn't seem to speak at this time, and I definitely don't speak,  but I did manage to find a link to their MySpace page from the link.

I am kind of talking to myself here, but I can be an interesting conversationalist when I want to be so here I go again (poppy Whitesnake reference anyone?)LOL

As some of you may know from some of my other posts, I am a huge fan of the band King's X, and I am still disappointed that they have been deemed not prog enough for Prog Archives, since they are labeled prog everywhere else, but I digress and that is a rant best left for the ranting room.

At any rate, one of the bands on my list of foods is The Jelly Jam, and since no one else wants to talk about them, I will a bit.  The Jelly Jam consists of 3 members of the band Platypus, who will most likely make an upcoming Prog Gone Wild Life thread.  The members of The Jelly Jam are Ty Tabor from King's X, John Myung from Dream Theater, and Rod Morganstein from The Dixie Dregs (amongst others).  The missing member from Platypus is keyboard player Derek Sherinian, also formerly of Dream Theater.

Whereas, Platypus is labeled a prog metal band, Platypus without Derek Sherinian is labeled a Space/Psyche band.  The Jelly Jam has released 2 albums on the prog rock label InsideOut.  The band has a similar sound to Platypus, as well as a similar sound to Ty Tabor's band King's X, except that Ty is singing lead vocals instead of backing and supporting vocals.  I believe that their music would appeal to fans of the guitar oriented rock/metal bands from the 60's and 70's such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and the Beatles.  Probably more for the fans of commercial prog, or the rock side of progressive rock, then for the fans of the "progressive" side of progressive rock, which I think makes sense to most of you.  Also, this should also appeal to other fans of King's X and Ty Tabor's solo work.  At the very least, these bands should also evoke the curiosity factor for fans of Dream Theater, or maybe fans of John Myung's bass playing, who don't like James LaBrie's singing but would like to hear Myung play with a more palatable vocalist.

Along with The Jelly Jam and Platypus, which are both bands that are on prog archives, Ty Tabor was also in a band called Jughead, which released 1 album on InsideOut music.  Jughead is not on PA, but I will take a moment to mention them too, since a Jug can be sort of food-related prog since you drink a jug of beer or wine while listening to some prog.  Jughead is more of a pop-oriented album, but at least to these ears, it is excellent pop.  Jughead consists of Ty Tabor with his keyboard buddy Derek Sherinian again, but this time Derek is playing more subdued on an electric piano instead of the heavier synthesizers that he is more known for.  Joining them on the rhythm section the brothers Bissonnette, Matt and Gregg, who both have fairly lengthy session musician portfolios.  Although not prog, I think that Jughead might appeal to some prog fans as well.  At least those like me who like the commercial side of prog.

Starting to think that I should move this thread into my blog since I talk to myself alot in there too. Cry

Anyhow, I am listening to the After the Storm charity compilation CD that was put together by Nearfest records for the benefit of the survivors of Hurricane Katrina and it includes 24 songs from 24 different prog bands across the spektrum of prog, although mostly centralized rather than on the fringes of prog.  Anyhow, two bands from the food-related prog band polls are included.  Nektar included Phazed by the Storm from their album Evolution.  The Muffins included an alternate mix of Essay R, which was previously unreleased.  Both songs are really good as are most of the songs on this album.

If anyone is interested in checking out Burnt Noodle I happened across the band's website which includes free downloads of 3 of their songs. Edit: The downloads are actually only 3 or 4 minute excerpts of the songs, but still might give you a taste of this relatively unknown psychedelic/space rock band.
