I'm taking a break from the animal polls, for a more bruising poll.  All of these bands are of the black or the blue variety and most are on the archives.  There are some heavyweights on this one, so maybe it will garnish more interest.

My only request is that after you vote for your favorite heavyweight fighter that you post a little something about the lightweight contenders so that myself and others might learn about some of these other bands that nobody ever talks about.  RIO/Avant is surprisingly missing from this poll, so I will probably lose 2 or 3 of my regular posters, but just about everyother subgenre is represented.

Black Mages recently put out a new album of cheese metal variations of Nobuo's themes for Final Fantasy games. I listened to it and it was terrible to behold, but also awesome in that "metal face" way, and faithful to the soundtracks if that's important to you.

(sadly the music for Edea's Castle, Honeybee Inn and the Moogle Theme remain unrevamped.)

I've listened to the new Virgin Black album and it's funeral doom. it reminded me of the more advanced examples of the genre - like Monolithe - but it's still funeral doom. I haven't heard any of their early work so they might still be a great band with one uncharacteristic release.

Lagger Blues Machine are neato, in a jammy and semi-inaudible way. I've only heard mp3s because the LP itself is fairly legendary...

My favourite here are GY!BE but I'll let other posters elaborate on how wonderful they are. "Antennas to Heaven" has too much guitar for me but all their other releases are gorgeous, expansive and creepy.

Out of sheer, unrepentant and brutal rebellion, I voted Blackmore!

Only 2 bands I like, both I love em!!!

Black Sabbath!! Their debut, Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage are supreme, faves of mine from the hard rock genre!

Black Widow a pitty for this band..Their debut is so magical and freaking awsome, with a mixture of Jethro Tull sound with there own touch, great!!

SABBATH! BOC ANNNNND MOODIES!

I love all three of these incredible bands but had to go with Sabbath for several important reasons:

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Vol. 4
Technical Ecstasy
Heaven and Hell
Dehumanizer

and parts of Masters of Reality.

I've really been liking the Moody Blues a lot lately. Really fun songs that don't lack the complexity makes for a winning combination.

Maybe it's just me, but I truly believe Godspeed You! Black Emperor is simply superior.

Quite surprising that the Moody Blues are leading the pack.  I was expecting Gy!BE, BS, or BOC to run away with this one, with possibly a surprise contender from Blackfield because of the Steve Wilson factor.  The Moody Blues are the only band on the list that I have seen live. I saw them 4 or 5 times.  The last time was quite different without Ray Thomas, however.  I guess for me it would probably be between them and Black Sabbath for my favorite from the list.

The one band on the list that I have been listening to the most frequently however, has been Black Bonzo.  I really like their 2007 release Sound of the Apocalypse.  Especially the title song, which is a must hear for symphonic fans.

Blackfield is probably the band that I have listened to the second most frequently in recent months. They are a really good Progressive Pop band, no matter what Ivan says about "Progressive Pop".

The other band that I have listened to some recently is Blackmore's Night.  Candace Night is a gorgeous woman and has a gorgeous voice to match.  They are musically quite different from my normal listening habits.  And with a guitarist named Blackmore, they are quite different then what you might expect, but still enjoyable to listen to.

i wonder how Mr Iommi would react if someone told him that a bunch of vain prog heads called his band proto prog metal?

true story:
"Greek Metal Hammer guy": how do you feel about doom metal?
"Tony Iommi": what do you mean? i created doom metal!!!!

I see that the new Black Mages album has been listed as the top album on the PA home page the last couple days.  Are there any more comments to enlighten me here in the forums?

I like the pre "Don't fear the reaper","Godzilla" BOC. Not prog but good fun heavy RnR.

As a result of creating this poll, I recently purchased the Blue Shift album, "Not the Future I Ordered".  It was released in 1997 and appears to be their only album.  It is actually quite good.  The vocalist sounds very much like Jon Anderson, so I think that they could appeal to Yes fans, or I suppose more likely to Starcastle fans, since I suspect that if you are prejudicial towards bands which heavily show their influences, then you might not take kindly to Blue Shift.  At times, the music sounds like Yes and therefore fits the voice, and at other times the music sound more like ELP or Genesis or more metalish, and then the voice sounds kind of out of place.  Sort of like the singer is singing "Close to the Edge, Down By the River", but the music is saying "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends".  I don't know if that makes any sense or not, since it is a poor analogy but anyhow...  They do perform an interesting cover of The Immigrant Song from Led Zeppelin, which I suppose was a better choice of song to cover than say, Illegal Alien from Genesis would have been. Wink

I just happen to run across this thread regarding the release of a new album by Blue Horses, so this post is just to add a link to that thread, in the case that anyone is interested.

The amazing Godspeed You Black Emperor without hesitation. I also like Blackfield but they are definitely not on the same level.

Ordinarily I would have voted for the mighy Sabs but they don't need the exposure so I voted other:

'Blue Sun'.

Extraordinary early 70s Danish jazz-folk-strangeness. If Deodata ever did a duet with the South Park woodland critters doing Coltrane and Bridget Fontaine covers it might sound thus. Good luck on ever finding their records tho'

This is an easy one for me. Being a Renaissance Faire fan, I had to pick Blackmore's Night. I'm not sure it's really prog, but Ritchie Blackmore turns in some great guitar work on these albums, showing his versatility compared with his Rainbow days. Candice Night's vocals are awesome.

I just detected The Black Noodle Project - so they get my vote!
Colourful indeed because they are not only confined to psych/space Tongue
One of their songs is named 'To Pink From Blue'

As for that color/colour issue - what about the band Living Colour? Anyone who's aquainted with this band?

Thanks Uwe!  Living Colour were a good metal band in their day. Mentioning them brings back memories of rocking out to Cult of Personality in my buddy's basement while playing cards and shooting pool.

By the way, since this thread has been revised LOLWink here is a link to a review done today by ZowieZiggy on the Blue Shift album.  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=191303 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=191303   His review describes the album similar to my description earlier in the thread.  I haven't done a review yet, as I am kind of lax with reviewing, but I'd probably give it a 3 star instead of a 2 star, but otherwise, I think he describes it quite well.

I'm sure that I know that song, since I have the Time's Up album, but I will have to give it another listen so that I can refresh my memory.
