"If band X is here, then band Y should be!!" accompanied with "They're much more prog than X!"

Overload! Too many favourites to choose from...comes down to "open-minded vs. close-minded" or "you obviously haven't heard of..." Such great arguments that have a way of shutting every possible door for continued (constructive) discussion.

"Using the open-minded vs. closed-minded argument"

For me, I haven't had it used against me yet and it wouldn't bother me if it did. I like being close-minded it enables me to really get into what I DO like and that happens to be Prog for the most part so f**k you!!!

Good thread, you little cynic you - I'll even forgive you the option:

"Thinking that prog is still relevant today"

For me, it has to be the ever popular "If band X is here, then band Y should be!!"

Prog is still as relevant today as it was in 1840.

You're missing a couple:

"I had to vote for band X because I haven't heard band Y"

"1.813484340293423178701 ^ 2 Stars really"

"More Z people tend to like album X"

I went for 'Using the open-minded vs. closed-minded argument'

My ironic favourite tendencies are the popular Peter and/or Ivan summoning ritual - for which the mantra is "overrated" - and the preponderance of posts which contain ONLY the name of a band. =P

Yes, wonderful! Always nice to have people who know how to control their flood of words LOL

And also nice to see a lot of people having no clue at all how to use the search button, and starting a thread about the same subject for the umphtiest time. Smile

-...band/album is so overrated.
- how exactly is prog metal prog.
-...band is not x sub-subgenre but y sub-subgenre.

To name a few.

"Why is prog metal prog?"

And also:

"You're so amusing and ridiculous... let me tell you what's wrong with you and make a poll out of it"...WinkTongue

By the way, let's see if these ocurrences are so amusing:

"You obviously haven't heard/don't know..." - Well, it's kind of stupid trying to argue about things you don't know about or haven't heard...

"If band X is here, then band Y should be!!"  - Applying strict logic, it should be this way.

"Add band X because they're better than band/genre Y" - Exactly. If band X is better than band Y, then we'll be better served having them here.

Tracing prog as far back as possible (OMG 1840's prog!!) - This one IS amusing... people than want to see prog in Elvis... or in BACH!!! there was one thread: "Mozart prog?" LOL

Using the open-minded vs. closed-minded argument - There's a lot of both in here.

Adding non-prog bands - depends on whose definition of prog we use.

Post-rock hate - not an amusing ocurrence but a sign of a healthy mind...LOL... even though Mogwai has saved the day for me.

Indie hate - you have to blame that into the idiots who label everything that hasn't been exposed to the mainstream audience as "indie". There's lots of "indie" sh*t.

Thinking that prog is still relevant today - well.... we're here after all... answering this poll...Tongue

It's the assumption that makes the poster seem like a completely arrogant pseudo-intellectual that amuses me.

Quote "If band X is here, then band Y should be!!"  - Applying strict logic, it should be this way.

Even if it advocates non-prog artists like Phil Collins or Joe Satriani?

Quote "Add band X because they're better than band/genre Y" - Exactly. If band X is better than band Y, then we'll be better served having them here.

This is amusing because it does nothing to further one's point about why the particular band should be added, especially if the band being suggested isn't prog...

Quote Tracing prog as far back as possible (OMG 1840's prog!!) - This one IS amusing... people than want to see prog in Elvis... or in BACH!!! there was one thread: "Mozart prog?" LOL

Agreed!

Quote Adding non-prog bands - depends on whose definition of prog we use.

And that is where the problem arises. Since we don't have a concrete definition of prog, the slope becomes ever the more slippery.

Quote Post-rock hate - not an amusing ocurrence but a sign of a healthy mind...LOL... even though Mogwai has saved the day for me.

It amuses me because people always resort to generalizations and irrationality when stated why they don't like it.

Quote Indie hate - you have to blame that into the idiots who label everything that hasn't been exposed to the mainstream audience as "indie". There's lots of "indie" sh*t.

And there's lots of "prog" sh*t, what's the difference?

Quote Thinking that prog is still relevant today - well.... we're here after all... answering this poll...Tongue

Close to the Edge is overrated...you only listen to that poppy drivel because you haven't heard of Kobaiantarkzotskzywurtzmandoahz, a smashing group led by Christian Vander on percussions (to call them simply "drums" is so pedestrian) and guest appearances by Robert Fripp (on flatulence) and his noisy wife Toyah(she joined in '07 to massage Bobby's ego).  Grade A uber-prog. No, because you have to drawn the line somewhere. You could make the case for any artist in the world to be in prog-related based off X then Y, so at some point you've got to say no.

Ah, a slight variation on

'Close To The Edge is so overrated. Real men listen to Relayer.'

Also we have

'Album Y is pretentious.'
'Album Z isn't really prog, so is mediocre.'

(South Park Underwear ??? Profit!  reference)

Here's one I just thought of, though not said directly, it has been rather implied:

"Regressive Rock (i.e. Retro-Prog) saved Progressive Rock" or "the spirit of progressive rock continued past the 70's thanks to later bands that sounded like they were stuck in the '70s."

Personal favorite, the constant stream of re-done threads - ex.  the DT crusade a while back. Top ten album polls, or the ever popular " Is X the new Y?"
anyway, i voted for "X is here, Y should be here." i get very frustrated when i see this and the posters always seem to fall back on it as they argue.

If you are saying you are being forced to listen to rap or punk then you either have teenage kids or you live in a college dorm room, ha ha ha.
When I lived in the college dorms in 77 I had to listen to lots of mediocre stadium rock ie Nuegent, Aerosmith, Foreigner etc, I'm still not too fond of music like that, but I don't hate it now as much as I did back then.

With some people, it doesn't matter the brand, just the alcoholic content. Personally, brandy is out of my league, budget-wise. That, and I haven't found a home brew store that sells a do it yourself kit. Mind you, even the ones for whiskey & vodka tell you that you'll just come out with 20% alcohol. That's not hard liquor, that's fortified wine.

P.S. Due to you, I still am planning to some day maybe possibly thinking of probably picking up a Dream Theater album. I just haven't decided which one I would, if I did actually carry it through. Any advice on these two points ?

None of the above -- though you've listed some good ones.

I laugh until I cry at  poll and thread titles containing absolute terms like "best" and "worst," ones which equate the subjective ("better," etc) with the objective, almost any poll containing "VS," poll titles with "dissapointing" (sic) in them, and any & all posts which operate under the assumption that "prog" is a known quantity, and a clearly-defined "genre," as in: "Why don't you just list real prog bands?" Wacko Duh! Because no two people can seem to agree as to just what the Censored "prog" is, you bonehead!

But what really, really "amuses" me to the point of apoplexy and teeth-gnashing, foaming MADNESS, are poll and threads with the ubiquitous, insulting "overrated" in the title. ("Underrated" is almost as bad.)

If you ever carry such a difficult enterprise through, I recommend starting with their classic and most revered album by anti-Dt fans (that sounded weird.. I mean, the album DT hateboys mention as the classical "they started good enough and never could repeat their success"): Images and Words.

This is not a tendency but something that can get really annoying... or confusing.

Have you ever noticed when discussions turn interesting that suddenly is a complete mess of colors?

Have you ever been able to understand one of those?

Last one, I finally decided to stop trying to figure it out.

Only the persons in the discussion would recognize whhich post was whose. For the rest of us, it was like ancient egyptian...

Generally they get back to the original color when somehow says "Censored I can't understand sh*t!"

A few things which would do our beloved professor's blood pressure no end of benefit would be the following:

1 - Installation of a working automatic spell-check system.

2 - A system whereby the word "best" is automatically replaced by "favorite"

3 - "under-rated" and "over-rated" be asterix'd out completely

4 - For it to be made impossible to use the words "Dream Theater" in polls (at least if there are any more than 15 identical polls already on the front page)

It is actually possible for me (as an admin) to put #2 and #3 above into practice... I could also arrange it so whenever anyone types in the word "Pallas", the words "Poo-Head" are substituted...

You've never noticed the insinuated insistence that some propound whereas you listen to certain "difficult" masterpieces or bands until you admit, I mean understand their supposed brilliance. Fifty listens later, and I still don't get the rave reviewed & revered debut master opus by Uber munchies. I guess another fifty will make the difference. Too bad i don't have time to listen to the new Porcupine Tree album. I've heard that people actually like it on the first spin or two. Tongue

DB - I tried simple white, but I never get responses. Or was it because my post ran past 500 words. How about smileys' proliferation, capital letter free for ALLS, parentheses pandemics, asides run wild, never ending digressions, ever acidic aspersions, and the ever popular - big word trip through the thesauruseseseses.

That, and fewkin' huge QUOTE PYRAMIDS! Angry

DB - you mean those where 3 or more posters intermingle their arguments ?

Oh, and MASSIVE, slow-loading sig pics too! Angry

DB - yeah, that and a listing of their lastfm or whatever recent playlist. AS IF I CARE WHAT YOU'VE JUST SPENT TIME LISTENING TO ON YOUR COMPUTER !

And endless lists of songs and artists sans any illuminating commentary!Angry

DB - that reminds me of a good example ...

And the lack of sleep due to staying up way too late on this pointless, addictive, wonderful forum....Sleepy

DB - ah sleep , perchance to REM. But this is not meant as an attempt to slyly introduce a debate as to the possible inclusion of that band in prog related.

THUMP! Ouch (falls asleep on floor)

DB  - (being francophone) quote Quoi ?

A few things which would do our beloved professor's blood pressure no end of benefit would be the following:

1 - Installation of a working automatic spell-check system.
DB - English or American ?

2 - A system whereby the word "best" is automatically replaced by "favorite"
DB - I think I drove Dallas Bryan & Rocktopus nuts making that arguement. And Favourite is Favourite. God save the Queen's English says this french canadian acadian ...

3 - "under-rated" and "over-rated" be asterix'd out completely

DB - Understood. Not only Asterix'd but Obelix'd, too. (let's see how many get that one )

4 - For it to be made impossible to use the words "Dream Theater" in polls (at least if there are any more than 15 identical polls already on the front page)

DB - DT ?

DB - How about the knowing attempt at insider status in using acronyms  instead of the actual album's title ? WYWH, DSOTM, TAAB, APP, TFTO, CTTE, ITCOTCK, SOADBDCS, FOABP,TLLDOB,SEBTP ET AL.. Especially ITCOTCK. It almost reeks of something 'pornographic ...

It is actually possible for me (as an admin) to put #2 and #3 above into practice... I could also arrange it so whenever anyone types in the word "Pallas", the words "Poo-Head" are substituted...

DB - alas, Pallas is a word I use only as a last resort. I do love their song Arrive Alive.

\

P.s. And the wrath inflicted when you are found guilty of not having read all 3000 posts on a thread and repeated something found on page 5 of 16. I only have so much time & so much beer before I lose the point of my arguement.

I'm not going to read the whole thread right now (there's a common occurrence here, all to often people don't take the time to read what's been said, and so repeat someone else's point, when they could have added to it, or miss explanations already given).

These are not favourite tendencies, but they can amuse me as much as exasperate me.

In polls or lists, people saying, "Where the hell is so-and-so?"  Which is especially obnoxious when someone has provided an "other" in a poll, already explained why they limited the options, or it's irrelevant to the subject (that can be funny).  Again in polls, people who don't read the question and/ or the initial post and so don't follow instructions.  I've played around with that a bit to see if people are paying attention, and have seen (or might have done it), a poll which asked for least favourite and various people mistakenly voted for their favourites.

Another one from polls:  You have but two choices (say the question might be "which album sounds better to you") and someone votes for choice A because they haven't heard choice C.  In many cases, one might at least expect someone who is going to vote to search for some streaming samples before voting.

Though it's true that music should not be treated like an Olympic event, I'm sure that many who voted in the Prog Olympics tournaments had never heard all of the options in each poll.  Imagine a figure skating competition where the judges do not bother to watch all of the performances and so can only vote for the ones they saw (we weren't around for x's performance so y wins!).

Another Prog Archives tendency amongst some is to be so PC sometimes that people resist giving a negative opinion in band threads (and there are those who seem to take offence at people who dare to express that they don't like the same music)... I'd much rather see a mix of positive and negative opinions.  It's a matter of taste, anyway, so why take personal offence?  I also think it's very progressive of people to try music that will be harder to enjoy (one doesn't have to buy it, but try the streams here or at myspace).  TO me it's been important to step out of my comfort zone and attempt different kinds of music, and like it or not, involve myself in discussion about the music.  I find it sadly amusing how some people take someone else not liking (and expressing so) their preferred music as a personal affront.

Go ahead Art Zoyd haters, make my day!

Oops, I went into rant mode.  And aren't those rambling ranters funny?

Paragraphs are neato. Thumbs%20Up There are a lot of posters who have been here for years yet almost never bother to elaborate on their feelings, stances and tastes and as a consequence they remain rather anonymous and homogenous. I think it's a little sad that people log onto a forum to say almost nothing at all.

Forum: an assembly, meeting place, television program, etc., for the discussion of questions of public interest. I hope that everyone realises the keyword buried in that definition is "discussion" rather than "formation of lists" or "snarkism" yet right now it's often blood from a stone-alicious. ;P

We FCAs are too humble to capitalize our ethnic descriptor. That's how we managed to avoid being assimilated by the english majority. They didn't notice us too often. Though some of them now understand what the term "tete carre" means (sorry, english keyboard, no accent grave or aigue) available). I am proud to say though, that my Ancestor Great great (i'm not sure how many greats, but ...) grandfather landed at Bouctouche around 1755 as a result of the deportation. I am also proud of the fact that no one in my family , paternal or maternal side, goes on whining, complaining, or in general insisting on some sort of apology from the Queen about the deportation of 1755. It happened, but it does not have any effect at all on our life today. Acadians, as an ethnic "bunch" are still around and having more fun than most. If the Queen should apologise for anything, it would be for marrying Phil, that greek interloper, instead of a good canadian boy like Clapton's mom did.
And lastly, apologies to Laplace. I would have extended this missive to my usual over consumption of space, but my wife suggested some incomplete renovations that I could busy myself with. And being that our daughter is sleeping over at Memere's tonight, there's no harm in getting foreplay under way early Wink

OH, I used to remember the rules as to when to use commas, semi-colons, other grammar thingies I can't remember right now, and also when to begin a paragraph. But sometimes I can't handle thinking when I'm writing. Cool

Now where did I hide that Hammer and Nails ???
