I've got Bull? on CD and it's the same Belgian band. I don't know of a Japanese band called Cro Magnon. I like them, but of course, they never reach the heights of Univers Zero, Present, Art Zoyd and Shub-Niggurath. -------------

Unlike my two other colleagues, I like this album a lot and recommend it; very worth getting.

I do like it, Assaf. But no album in the world (except for Zaar and Ahvak) is likely to match UZ, Present and Shub-Niggurath albums. The Cro Magnon & [bub] album is a lot more stripped down and more like chamber prog. I do really need to listen to their albums again. I think Bull? is their best though. -------------

Zaar and Ahvak don't match Univers Zero. What does match (and surpass) UZ, however, is Igor Stravinsky (and, to a lesser extent, Bela Bartok). The Rite of Spring by the former and The Miraculous Mandarin by the latter are fairly similar to UZ (Stravinsky was a huge influence on them). |

So was Albert Huybrechts, but his music is hard to come by. On RateYourMusic there is only one CD listed, but that CD does have all his chamber work on. I'm going to see if I can find a copy. Zaar and Ahvak are the closest in terms of quality, you'll get to UZ, Present, Shub and Art Zoyd, in my opinion. I love those two bands. Their sound is quite a bit different, but they definitely have been influenced by them. Apart from Pocket Orchestra, but they're only slightly comparable, as they blend in a lot influences. -------------

I think Sotos is a lot better than Zaar, personally. Sotos spawned Zaar, if you didn't know. |

I have both Sotos albums as well. The second is fantastic, especially the Maelstrom suite.

I don't really get this whole "Pwned" and "match" stuff; There are influences, yes, there are similarities and personal preferences; trying to show something as fact, is weird to me.
In any case, I don't need Ahvak and Zaar to match UZ or Zaar to match Sotos; I want a different listening experience from each band. Not a contest to match the level.
If you like Stravinsky more, that's cool, but as I listen to the string quartets by Bartok I simply am amazed at its structure and form and can definitely hear the influences and style that those groups have later taken, and which are also influenced/similar to Stravinsky.
Listening to those string quartets, is to somewhat a better listening experience from UZ and their ilk, but perhaps not as fun if I can use that word.

Assaf, he said spawned, not pwned.  The Bartók I've heard I didn't enjoy as much as the Messiaen I have, but perhaps I have the wrong Bartók composition. I'll class Univers Zero, Present, Shub-Niggurath, Art Zoyd, Cro Magnon, 5uu's, Sotos, Zaar, Ahvak and any other favourite bands of mine as equal to each other in terms of listening pleasure (not necessarily in quality, but many are). I don't mind if a band sounds like an another, as long as it sounds good. I do know that Trouserpress sold his Cro Magnon albums though, so I know he wasn't that impressed either. I am also sure Joren wasn't that keen. But different stokes, at the end of the day. My recent love is Pocket Orchestra, who I think were ahead of their time when they recorded all of their material on Knebnegauje. -------------
