These "gentlemen" have at one time or another displayed bad attitude, bad taste, bad vibes, supreme egos and just plain pure stupidity. There is a story behind each one , most really just to get in the press.
Who are your basket cases?

is there any doubt? Gene Simmons, though somehow he'd be the one I'd want to hang with more than anyone on that list.. they'd all be way too hip for me, and a few there would start drooling on my shoe and it would be embarrassing

I got to relate the Gainsbourg story. He was on French TV and asked if he was afraid of anybody. The chain -smoking unshaven playboy casanova poet pulled out a large denomination Franc bill and burned it while everyone was looking on aghast . )As in most countries, its a crime especially publicly) The host kept telling him that he won't be able to deny it. Serge sneered back the French equivalent of f*** them . Live on TV He also openly (and very crudely) proposed immediate sex with a famous female American movie star who was on the same show . Incredible.

I would say:
1) Gene Simmons as biggest swine
2) Roger Waters as most arrogant
3) Lars Ulrich as biggest sellout
and
4) Axl Rose as biggest all-round jerk.

I have to disagree with you (for once) as Gainsbourg is a phenomenal musician, composer, yes with a twisted sense of humor like a French Zappa but should not be put in a same thread with guys like Rose or Simmons.or Rotten.
I do like almost all his songwriting fhe recorded under his name or for Jane Birkin until he went ''reggae'' which i didn't like.

AXL ROSE!! At last I'm seeing hate for such bands that outside the prog world, they are so praised and told to be AMAZING!! That's amazing! They suck!! (no offense, please)
I, somehow, have fun with Gene Simmons. Though, somehow similar with Axl, he thinks he's God of rock, and really he has not near being at least in heaven( , get it?) of rock.

I'm sorry you've seemed to have left off of your list one Steven Tyler. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting that asshole in 1976 when I was concert chairman at my college. Aerosmith was the opening act and that son-of-a-bitch was drunk when he hit the stage for their sound check. He proceeded to shakeup a can of beer and cover me from head to toe in beer foam. The legend of Aerosmith nearly ended that day because I was going to rip his lungs out thru his eye sockets. A couple of my associates whisked me out of the arena and things got back to normal.

I guess I'm not up on my rock stories - I like the music.
Bowie? What did he ever do to be obnoxious? Just curious. Ozzy and Keith Moon never seemed blatently obnoxious, just chemically altered.
I saw a Cat Stevens DVD of a concert from the seventies. When someone stuck a rose to his microphone stand he called them a mailto:#@%*ing - #!%*ing idiot. That was pretty obnoxious. Couldn't believe quiet peaceful Whatever-his-name-is-now would do such a thing.
But I'm voting for Gene Simmons on the strength (or weakness rather) of his interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air alone.

I guess you haven't heard Bowie's recent concert "Lollypop" scandal . He got hit by one in the eye, stuck there mysteriously according to legend and he took a very hissy fit . Funny really . He should have just "sucked it up"

Well so many have been such assholes for so many years it's hard to vote, so I won't
I'd rather recall the musicians who graciously (if perhaps wincingly) allowed me -- a fairly rude 20-year-old at the time -- to get in their face during a break to talk to them: Bill Connors and Chick Corea (Return to Forever), Candy Givens (Zephyr), and the great Count Basie come immediately to mind as the good examples. All were highly tolerant of the idiot (me) who was seriously invading their space.

He's just ridiculously stupid, I saw a full 1970's AC/DC concert on TV once, and the whole time he was partially hunched over doing a stupid half ass headbang, and making the ugliest face I've ever seen. A couple months later I saw another AC/DC concert on TV, but this time it was in present times, and he was doing the same stupid thing.
You know if he actually played descent guitar, or tried something a little more original/complex, I wouldnt bash him. But he's a pompous idiot, making some of the worst music to ever be played, and people love him for it... and thats gross.

The Habs had a great regular season this year. Hopefully, that is a sign of good things to come. 20 years ago when we were still in the same division I might not have said that, but the rivalry between the two teams just isn't what it used to be.
As far as Diamond Dave goes, he just had one of the biggest egos in rock, and you have to love the spandex with the holes for his butt cheeks to hang out. Not to mention his going on to host a radio show where he tried to compete with Howard Stern. Not to mention that he broke up Van Halen at what might have been considered their commercial peak with 1984 (yes, I know its not a favorite on PA, but it was a very successful album). And of course, every few years the band is reunites with DLR, and then they breakup before anything actually happens. Although this year they actually did tour, although without Michael Anthony.

I like him because he's played a good amount of simple kick ass riffs and solos . He plays guitar and loves to play it. There's nothing stupid about that. I'm pretty sure thats why plenty of people dig his stuff. I wouldn't say he is the best guitarist by any means, but I wouldn't say a lot of Prog guys are either.
Anyways I vote Axl because he's a dick, a terrible singer. If Prince was an option I'd vote for him. Obviously.

As a woman, I find Gene Simmons particularly obnoxious. Not only does he seem interested only in making as much money as he can (something I don't find particularly attractive in a person), but it also seems much of his boasting about having slept with a ridiculous amount of women is... well, nothing more than that. Needless to say, I don't have a very high opinion of people who do that.

Ah, I see where you're going wrong here - I think that's what's known as a stage persona; I hear tell that off stage, he's actually completely different, can sometimes go a full day without 'half-ass headbanging' & doesn't even wear his school uniform
So not quite sure where you get "stupid" or "overblown caveman" from there...
Perhaps you were thinking of this gentleman:
Although I love his music, I cannot believe he wasn't included in the above list of obnoxious rock stars...

From the list, I'm gunna have to go with Lars. He's the one I'm most familiar with off that list. He could not even play the double bass drums on the song Dyers Eve, which is just pathetic, as much as I like that song too. Massively overrated, sure not the worst drummer ever, but was never up to the par with any of Megadeth's drummers. As with many hardcore fans of the 80s Metallica sound, I always thought he should have been the one that was sitting where Cliff Burton was that dark fateful night.

It could be put down to mental illness, rather than being obnoxious. He's never been the most stable of people.
I'd like to vote for both Axl Rose, (I cant stand that man) and Gene Simmons. Even as a 12 year old Kiss fan, I thought he was a complete d!ck. Recent TV appearences have merely confirmed this belief. Ace Frehley was the best in Kiss..

Besides the fact that he's an all around terrible drummer, this guy is obviously the biggest douchecannon in rock.
He honestly believes that even if you pay for his music, you shouldn't be allowed to do what you want with it. Bought the CD? great! want to listen to it on your mp3 player? you have to buy it again! no copying of your own music! take that video off youtube! dont you know no one is paying to see it??? we're going to starve!
Some bands (i.e. NIN, Radiohead) have realized that being famous means you can make tons of money by essentially giving away the music for free. Metallica thinks you should have to pay for every metallica experience, no matter how insignificant. The arrogance astounds me.
It's certainly one thing to expect to get paid for the work you put into your music, but Lars goes out of his way to show that he's really only in it for the money. A song isn't an emotional release, it's a business investment.
Honorable mention for Axl Rose, too. I think Dave Grohl summed up my feelings for Axl quite nicely when he said something like, "You know Axl Rose took a gypsy fortune teller on tour with GnR... I wonder if she ever told him he'd be a total d**k the rest of his life, or if she felt obligated to tell him nice things?"

I'd like to back up Jim Garten's Ted Nuegent recommendation. Along with his faked videos about bow and arrow hunting, he uses the stage to go on about US citizens who can't speak English.
I read that Art Garfunkel once stopped a show and kicked a woman off stage who was doing sign language for deaf people.
Regarding Jammun's reference to patient rock stars, when I was much younger I bugged the crap out of Fripp at a record signing, he waited a good 20 minutes or so before he finally got a chance to put in a well timed put-down in front of all that were there. It was very embarassing.

| +1 Completely agree with you. The saddest part is knowing he really was into it for the love of back when the band were in their musical prime from 1981 to 1989. As much as Dave Mustaine was sometimes full of sh*t and said some pretty harsh things, at least I can respect him for having way more integrity than Lars. Mustaine would always admit his second guitarist in his band, no matter what the line up was, could run rings around him in the lead guitar field and he still does, which shows some degree of humbleness in him. Even in Megadeth's most commercial sounding stuff, their was still always this element to it that showed he wasn't completely in it for the money, it's hard to explain, but it's a vibe lacking in say, Load, Reload and St Anger. For example, Youthanasia had A Tout Le Monde on it, but despite it's melodic bent, you can feel every ounce of Mustaine's heart and soul in that song.
