5. Roll the Bones/Counterparts (Damn, these albums would be good if the better song from both were combined and made into something not unlike Presto) 4. Feedback (Uggghhh.. I don't EVER want to hear another cover of Summertime Blues again.) 3. Vapor Trails (I maybe like one song. Maybe.) 2. Snakes and Arrows (One listen in enough.) 1. Rush (Not another Led Zep cover band!)
I can't believe all the Presto hate. Presto is great from start to finish! Sure it's no 2112 or Moving Pictures. Then again, my favorite Rush album is Grace Under Pressure/

I agree they are terrible really. But take the best tracks from these and form one album and you have a winner.
What is actually good from Presto I wonder? Any ideas?

In no order..
Rush
Test for Echo
Vapour Trails
Hold Your Fire
Roll the Bones
Overall least favorite is Vapour Trails, but I dont think they've ever made a 'bad' album, as such. These are merely my least fave from a generally excellent back catalogue.
I'm quite surprised to see Presto slated so much. The production is a little weak, but there are some gems on that album, especially The Pass and Available Light.

I can only name three it seems: Hold Your Fire, Test For Echo and by far Vapor Trails. The next would be worse than the great Rush albums, but they're essentially good Rush.

Would be those three for me too. But only TFE and VT leaves me relatively cold, even though they have some killer tracks.

that occurred to me, Alan...
but more immediately, this is the n00b's first post...they haven't introduced themselves, or said anything constructive...merely decided to criticise the later output of one of this site's staple bands...
the word 'flamer' springs to mind....

Anything after Grace Under Pressure excluding Vapor Trails. I'd have trouble filling up a single CD of songs I like post-1984.
Edit: And to make an additional point, it's not the 80s sound I don't care about. I adore 80s Genesis and a good amount of 80s pop. I just think 80s Rush post-GUP is no good to me. As for the 90s albums... well, they're 90s.

1. Hold Your Fire 2. Power Windows 3. Grace Under Pressure 4. Counterparts 5. Presto
Those are definitely their weakest in my opinion. From Grace under pressure to Presto the production on all the album sounds too 80's and there's not many great songs, although there are some really good one on Presto. All the albums before those are classics of course, and all the ones after I think their great (except maybe Counterparts), although not as prog as the others, but who cares? I don't.

And I take issue with all this "Snakes and Arrows" hate going 'round prog circles. Seriously, how is it bad?
Is it like the 'classic' Rush albums? No, of course not, and nothing ever will. We need to stop applying our nostalgia to modern records; it keeps us from appreciating what they truly are.
p.s. Anyone who doesn't like 'Hope' must be insane. :p

I agree; this thread is stupid.
And Snakes and Arrows is in my top 5, if anything. But that doesn't even exist, since every Rush album is great, IMO. They're just different from each other.

agreed, first prog album I ever heard and will always hold a nugget of my soul.
TBH its pretty disconstructive to focus on the bad albums bands have released. Infact its probs best to challenge music that you enitialy dislike (within reason) by immersing yourself in it, especially when it comes to bands/acts that you have enjoyed before, its a bad plan to compare subsequent releases from anyone, its best to put them up against allot of the dirge that gets released on a daily basis. If you know what I mean.

I like all Rush albums, so I don't hate any of these or anything, they're just the weakest in my eyes.
- Presto (extremely thin sounding, weak tracks except "The Pass" and closer "Available Light") - Roll the Bones (the same thin sound, generally weaker tracks than Presto, reaches the bottom on the silly title track. "Bravado" is strong though) - Caress of Steel (bleak production, the short tracks are pretty weak, the 20-minute epic is flawed at several points) - Vapor Trails (a bit messy sounding, too loud sounding, this affects the drum sound) - Test for Echo (a bit of a letdown after the superb Counterparts album, a mixed bag really, and not that bad, but can't really think of a weaker album not already mentioned)

Best post in a thoroughly depressing thread. The Pass makes that album worth buying alone, and even though it is probably their weakest overall, that band are simply incapable of making a bad LP. Simple as.

Actually the live versions of Vapor Trails tracks are great as well as Snakes and Arrows. The live sound is way heavier and more accomplished. Worth getting the Live Snakes and Arrows - great production and very good concert - most of the snakes CD is on it so its worth it just to hear decent versions of those mediocre studio tracks. I rediscovered those tracks through that DVD.
