Welcome to the forum.

Some bands that come to mind:

Hawkwind (classic space rock)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! (very trippy and experimental)
Porcupine Tree (if you like a slightly crunchy, metallic edge)

The band does not sound like PF at all, but there is a song they did which I think does:

High as Pride - by Echolyn

But beside that, I don't think anyone came close to sounding like Floyd.

I don't think Hawkwind sound like Floyd - they sound altogether more like Hawkwind

Eloy are a mix of Hawkwind and Floyd - quite uncanny sometimes...

I think Eloy is closer to the sound of VDGG, albeit faster like Hawkwind. Pink Floyd has a pretty distinctive sound - something in between Hawkwind, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Camel and Dire Straits, is probably most accurate.

Eloy sounds a bit like floyd, but it's really less good.

"Dom", a german band sounds close to PF, but it's quite amateurish.

Hi Ravensoul, welcome to the forum!

Pink Floyd went through some changes in style themselves of course, any particular albums of their's you had in mind?

There might be some similarities between GY!BE and PF, but there seems to be an awful lot more difference...

Porcupine Tree has some very obvious Floyd influences, closest thing Floyd I can think of right now.

if your looking for the sound of peak period Pink
Floyd or Tangerine Dream, mostly without vocals
and created in europe during the same time period
you need to look into mostly German Kosmiche
Musik!

Lard Free - I Am After Midnight or 3(france)
Atila - Reviure(spain)
Neuronium - Quasar 2C361(spain)
Sensations Fix - Portable Madness(italy)
Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass(germany)
Ashra - Blackouts
Schicke, Fuhrs, & Froeling - Symphonic Pictures

is a good place to start!
I would hate for you guys to run your car into a ditch, I
dont think you could find the door to get out!

The Sky Moves Sideways is really an ode to Pink Floyd. The Sky Moves Sideways Part 1 even has the Gilmour guitar thing going on.

Timthy Pure sounds quiet similar to Pink Floyd

Without a doubt, the closest thing to Pink Floyd is a german band "RPWL". They even started as PF Revival Band, though they changed their style two albums ago.

Porcupine Tree is the one that comes to mind of the neo-progs

Mostly Autumn guitarrist Bryan Josh has a thing for Gilmour, so a lot from PF his heard on their songs, along with their own folkish sound.

Posted By: Litl
Date Posted: April 24 2005 at 13:20
Some of Mostly Autumn sound like Division Bell era Floyd.  Floyd with a little folk/celtic rock going on.  The guitarist is very Gilmoresque.

RPWL was a Floyd cover band origonally and still carry some of their Dark Side era sound.

Dyolf Knip sound a lot like them played backward

RPWL (their MP3 that is available on this website sounds like PINK FLOYD 1967-1968) and PORCUPINE TREE.

Anathema (at least since the times of "Alternative 4") and Lake of Tears (the album "Forever Autumn").

Maybe I'm just a Floyd purist... but Mostly Autumn altho I know Brian is a big Gilmour fan, sounds nothing like Floyd to me.  Neither does Porcupine Tree (even in their early years).. altho I like Porcupine Tree.

Some of Alan Parson's sounds Floyd like.  He has one cd out in the 90s thats got a few Floyd sounding numbers... "Try Anything Once".. and of course, Gilmour played on one song from his current CD "A Valid Path"...

Floyd has a specific sound because no one plays like Gilmour.  Its something Roger probably realized when he went solo... Gilmour carried on the Pink Floyd sound, because he was the Pink Floyd sound.

Hello,

I agree with some writers here at this forum; Mostly Autumn (try a "Gab is too Wide", absolutely influenced by Pink Floyd with a Celtic edge a must have for PF fans, the guitarist Bryan Josh, looked even as David in his younger days), RPWL ("As God has failed" and more)(both have covered PF songs and played a few times Comfortably Numb together!) , Porcupine Tree ("The Sky Moves Sydeways"), Eloy, Pendragon, Camel and also;

Lee Saunders: A Promise of Peace  (a Rogers Waters like solo album),
Blackfield, Steve Wilson of Procupine Tree with Aviv Geffen (or is this too soft?),
Ambrosia (Alan Parsons got a grammy for producing an album of them),
Dream Academy (Gilmour is involved with them),
Phil Manzanera (6 pm),
Magenta (? or is that too much yes?)(but the guitar work...).

By the way at almost every session recording Dave Gilmour is playing there is that strong recognizable guitar work present; from Propaganda till Lionna Boyd, All about Eve, Jimmy Nail, The Pretty Things, Arcadia, Snowy White, Sam & Vicky Brown or Warren Zevon... all beauties. You could fill 3 ceedees with his solo's very easy without becomming boring. See: http://home.hetnet.nl/~nickgielkens/david/index.htm - http://home.hetnet.nl/~nickgielkens/david/index.htm

I would suggest early Van der Graaf Generator, because they definitely have that spacey/psychedelic sound, but are quite different than Pink Floyd and much, much less accessible...

Eloy- late 70's sound a bit like PF mid 70's (only better)

I agree with some of the bands posted here (Anathema, Porcupine Tree, etc) but I would never compare Omega's sound to PF's.

Try this one:

Area 39 http://www.area39project.com/ - www.area39project.com/   if that don't sound as.... funny.

And by the way;
Mostly Autumn is influenced by Pink Floyd and no not all their songs sound like PF, absolutely not! But have a listen at "The Gab Is too Wide", "Mother Nature", "The Last Climb","The Last Bright Light", "Evergreen", their spacy intro's, the long guitar solo's, the seek to perfection...

But indeed Heather doesn't sound like Roger, Rick, Nick or David.

Keep smiling ;-)

Mostly Autumn's last album (Passengers) sounds alot like DSOTM, only the jazzy feel on that one was replaced by their own folkish influence.

NW USA band Obscured By Clouds, do unplugged Floyd (also the odd Doors & Nick Drake cover). Greatly enjoyed their first album (privately issued via their own website - go surfing for details at:

They even suggest that stripped of the electronics that Floyd are even closer to Roy Harper than you think................

  1. Think Floyd (UK)
  2. Cosmos (Switzerland)
  3. The Black Noodle Project (France)
  4. Far East Family Band (Japan)

They may not be famous .... However I can recognize them as Pink Floyd type bands.

If you like early PINK FLOYD with Syd Barret, check some of his solo material (with caution)!  You probably mean something like the albums "Dark Side of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here" or "Animals" though? Can't get anything quite similar to such in my mind!

To add some Floydian inspired bands:

Brasilian Tisaris/German Eloy (Silent Cries, Mighty Echoes)/Japanese Cosmos Factory (album An Old Castle .. sounds like early PF)/mid-Porcupine Tree (The Sky Moves Sideways-era)/early Ayreon (very Gilmourian guitar work)/Swiss Metamorphosis (album And Then All Was Silent)/French band Phaesis (album Reminiscence)/Thule and Popol Ace (Popol Vuh) from Norway/....

The only people who sound like Floyd are Floyd. Most bands take cues from Floyd like the mars volta who sound abit like Sid Barrett era at times bar that they dont sound Lkie them. Unless you count the cover bands like Think Floyd (who I must say are rather good) or Dream Theater last week when they done Dark Side of the moon lol.
