I am a big Dream Theater fan. I think that they are simply amazing. I just can't understand why some people don't like them.

Can anyone explain me why???? Give me some reasons to hate such a wonderful band.

They're my favourite band... but people hate them for:

1. Playing fast and showing off... although I've never understood what's wrong with people playing fast.

2. Not being innovative. Although god forbid every band only being good if they're innovative.

3. "Lacking Substance"... whatever that means. Someone said it on here once... I guess it's one of those terms for people who take music too seriously.

4. "Not even being a prog band". Oh dear... I better throw away 3/4 of my cd collection then coz it's all heavy metal.

5. Ripping off Metallica riffs. Oh dear... god forbid playing like the people you idolise. My band has a similar sound and style to Dream Theater. Better quit now then.

The list is endless my friend. By posting what you posted, I'm guessing there's gonna be a loada sh*tty replys here. But none-the-less you can have faith in me. Dream Theater will always be my favourite band.

They just bore me, not because they are that bad, but because I don't care for their music

I ocasionally like one or more tunes from any album, but to sit through an hour of their music is really torture.

d) Too much heavy metal
DT is supposed to be a prog metal band with heavy metal influences, not the other way around. They've forgotten that, and ToT is the perfect example of a horrific change in direction from prog to boring Metallica/Iron Maiden-like (I hate those bands) music.

But don't get me wrong. I like them, but because of those reasons mentioned above, I don't rate them as high as someone else might. I used to be a big fan, but nowadays I'm more into symphonic and space prog and rarely listen to my DT records. I&W still is my favourite, of course, it's a perfect example of their (sometimes hidden) ability to write good prog music.

DT, just like any other band, is trying different avenues. Wouldn't you get tired of recording the same album over and over? And don't forget that they played those songs hundreds of times through the years.

Anyway, people on one side of the ball park are complaining that, for example, ToT is too "metal", but if they did an I&W'ish album, the people in the other side of the park would complain that it sounded too much like I&W.

I don't think that's a big gripe people have - but there are places where it's not just playing like Metallica; it is playing Metallica (in Metropolis Part I and somewhere on ToT - I don't know the exact bits offhand).

What it all comes down to is that Dream Theater are good at some things, and not others - like any band. It's just the things that they tend to be good at (not just playing fast, but that's certainly one of them) don't particularly appeal to the fanbase of progressive rock. If I were to listen to them with "pure prog" ears, perhaps I wouldn't like them. If I were to have only come across them today, perhaps I wouldn't like them. But as it is, they brought me from metal into prog and I listen to far too many styles beyond prog to be worried by a bit of metal.

I can understand all your arguements, especially number 4, but I've never agreed with any band being hated for doing something different from what they started with. Dream Theater started as prog... we all know they're heavily influenced by Heavy metal, so let them do a heavy metal album. That's my opinion anyway.

Besides, Iced Earth's "When the Eagle Cries" is an exact rip-off of Black Sabbath's "Sleepy Village". But I wouldn't say Iced Earth can't write a song.

It seems to me that bands like DT will always polarize opinion-you are either dim and think they are good or smart and know that they are rubbish!

They repeat themselves over and over. Citing the first reply, no innovation at all.

And yes, they show off way, way too much. So much that eventually they become boring.

I usually liked most of their pieces as soon as I heard it, but got bored to the bone by it in about a week. So... uninteresting. But that's my opinion.

This is directed at the bass playing than anything else, because I'm a bass player:

He can play some really interesting lines (both fast and slow), but in far too many ("too many" is subjective, obviously), he's content to play something the same as, or similar to, the guitar part. It might add weight to the riffs, but it doesn't do a lot for the harmonic content.

If you listen to "The Dance of Eternity", there aren't all that many parts where the bass is playing something of its own (I may be wrong here, it's a while since I listened. I'm pretty sure though).

As for w**kery, there really are bits that could do with less soloing, especially on Scenes from a Memory (and possibly Train of Thought; I don't own that one). For example Fatal Tragedy has two riffs cycling for a considerable length of time towards the end just covered up with different solos. Home has a similar story.

Now that that's out of the way....

I really like DT for the following reasons:

Instrumental skill:  Like it or not, The members of Dream Theater are some of the most talented musicians out now.  If you could play guitar like Petrucci or drum like Portnoy, would you want to show it off?  I think that most of us would say yes.

They can also make a great introductory band.  If you find a friend who happens to like them, tell them about some other prog artists, and see if they like.

That's my 12 cents.

Funny, I love Dream Theater for their song writting skills alone. Playing fast at some points adds some variety, aggression, drama, etc. The solos hardly take that much time out of a song, so no one can really complain about that (the longest really is on Beyond This Life). Listen to Stream of Consciousness and you'll know what the deal with this band is.

Oh yeah, and people forget about ACCESSIBILITY. Most of their albums I didn't care for right away, for various reasons. Give them a like 2 dozen spins and they'll grow on you, I guarantee that much. Then you can really judge.

Because they are not as much fun as Iron Maiden and not as interesting as Tool.

DT is essentially a metal band with an excellent prog drummer and a keyboard player who wants to be Rick Wakeman.The relentless shredding of TOT bores me silly.They need to get a sense of humour and put some 'wit' into their music. I DO like Liquid Tension Experiment though.

I should think they play well, as, apart from LaBrie, they have all attended prestigious musical academies...

I adore their music, but I am neither middle-aged, nor computer analyst nor spotty nerdy-boy. Might I suggest you stop posting this kind of abusing messages?

No.If you get annoyed because someone slams your band you should not be on a forum.Forum etiquette works both ways,I will always defend myself even if it means crossing the line occasionally.

What controversy? Your reasons for hating DT were just plain silly! A feeble attempt at humour which was insulting to Dt fans! To many music is a personal and precious thing.

The first bit is what I was saying, but even restricting the field to metal Mying isn't really near the top of his field -  give most bands with Steve diGiorgio in a listen (not really Iced Earth, but all the fusion metal he's done is insane). Then there's the Spiral Architect and Watchtower bass parts. I'm talking mainly here about the bass players that widdle about, because that's what Myung's more famous for.

Refers to FM radio - FM Rock is a category that includes "MOR" rock bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, etc - bands that wrote "nice" ballads that wouldn't offend anyone.

I refer to the fact that DT use standard rock ballad structures - ie non-progressive structures in their music on "IAW".

Reed Lover Just likes controversy - he's the devils advocate - He has his reasons for disliking DT.

RL's tastes overlap mine in lot's of areas and I'm suprised if he hated all the output of DT - And he's is being controversial by claiming that DT are not good musicians........

But I'd still like to know where I became 'geeky' - unless that is an assumption about all people who work with computers....In which case I'd say it was about 50% true......
