Subject: Help!

Somewhere during the following three weeks im going to do a presentations in music in school. My task is to compare the resemblence and difference between two different, in this case, bands.

Unfortunatley, due to certain events, i hadn´t been told so until the last day of the deadline. With the heavily reduced time i was left to work with, about 5min , I wrote ,from the top of my head, a comparison between Kc and genesis. when i come to think of it, i might not been such a good idea since the audince will undrestand little less the nothing. So instead i have a second option, and that is to let the music talk, meaning im to play one song from each band. however im only allowed to play for 5 minutes, leaving 2 and a half minutes to each band...quite frankly I have no idea whitch songs I shall play.

So, what is the ultimate section of 2 and half minutes representing Kc and Genesis?

So far my best choices IMO is the beginning on starless and maybe The fountain of salmacias (2:00 - 4:50)

Xanadu:

Two and half minutes each?  Jeez, did either of them even write any less-than-three-minute songs?  I doubt it.

If I were in your position, I would play either the opening 2.5 minutes of 21st Century Schizoid Man or the first 2.5 minutes following the long intro to Larks Tongues in Aspic (the song), which begins with that piercing guitar figure.

For Genesis, I would use either the 2.5 minutes of Cinema Show beginning with the vocal part leading into the long 7/4 instrumental jam, or 2.5 minutes of Watcher of the Skies, starting somewhere toward the end of the intro, into the first vocal part.  Or else I would use the first 2.5 minutes of Squonk.

Good luck!

Your right, the class will know nothing about it. You dont have to use my suggestion but to get the class interested perhaps a comparison between modern KC and Tool? If so the songs would be the power to believe p1 followed by begining of elektrik. Then for Tool go with the begining of Prabola (off of lateralus). Might actually impress class mates.

I don'e envy your position. I would use early KC (probly 21st century...or In The Court....) and for genesis I would use the 7/4 instramental from The Cinema Show (an absolutely brillent song, one of the best ever. And thats not a huge genesis fan talking {altho i do have what we call thier "classic" albums})

Good Luck and let me know how that goes.

Good luck on your project. If I were you, to compare KC and Genesis, use 21st Century Schizoid man, the second verse (1:22), to where the song speeds up, right up to 3:52. As for Genesis, go with Can-Utility and the Coastliners from the instrumental section, starting about about 2:30 to 5:00. I like that part.  I hope that helps!

I agree - compare a classic and modern prog band and then draw parallels between the two.

I just think its fantastic that someone who goes to school wants to do a presentation on prog rock in 2005!! I salute you Xanadu

I think your choice of two bands is good. Both prog, but both poles apart. I think I would choose tracks that demonstrate KC's more agressive, and hard rock edge; the opening couple of minutes of 'One more Red Nightmare' from Red, perhaps. For Genesis I would choose the opening of 'Dance on a Volcano' It's an exciting album opener; brighter sounding than KC, tuneful, well produced and very prog.

Whatever you choose, good luck!

Hi Xanadu
I hope I'm not muddying any waters here but I would choose either

King Crimson - Book of Saturday ( Larks Tongues)
Genesis - Harold the Barrel(Nursery Cryme)
or
King Crimson - Lady of the Dancing Water(Lizard)
Genesis - Lillywhite Lilith(The Lamb)
Or
Mix as you see fit

They are all within the time restraints and show a good diversity in theme, structure and texture.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Harold the barrel is one of their best short songs (from IMO their best album) and it will in any case prove the difference between them two, although I dont feel it represent the Genesis that facinates me but what could i do...

why not 21th century shizoid man? do you believe me if i say i dont have the guts to play it?

okay...to make it a little harder I can say i dont own all of their records,as for now i own:

King Crimson: ITCOTCK,Larks aspic 1, SABB, Red, discipline, TOAPP,

Genesis: all from trespass to the lamb (whitch i bought yesterday, it seems to contain loads of short numbers)

Hangedman: that might be a better idea, but since I dont own any recent Kc stuff and never had the time to check out Tool that cannot be done.

Thanks for the help, there is to much to comment but I´ll check out so many as possible.

Xanadu:

KC - play some Epitaph. Any part of it, actually.
Genesis - First 2,5 minutes of Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, perhaps?

That's what I would play if I were you, anyway.

Genesis: first 2:30 of Firth of Fifth

KC: definitely Nightwatch

both bands at their best

KC - Starless - where middle improvisation come back into the rousing original melody.

Genesis - Firth of Fifth - Guitar solo with volume pedal near the end.

If you have to talk about them then i wud mention Fripp's chromatic riffs and especially the diminished 5th's in Red in comparison to the much more diatonic Genesis.

KC: Either the second verse of 21st Century leading into the jam, or somewhere in the middle of Starless

Genesis: the opening to SEBTP?

Just some thoughts.

When it comes to Kc it will probably be something more guitar oriented then those first albums...i am think of maybe frakctured or, which someone mentioned, aspic (part one i guess)

As for genesis, im more confused. It's hard to find a section with all the aspects of them represented in such short amount of time.

the intro on Dancin with the moonlit knight will, if I go by the 2:30 standard, stop right in the beginning of the instrumental part which is good.

Would it be possible to edit something out of The Battle of Epping Forest?

Updated...(due to lack of time I brought this thread up intsead of making a new)

I had my presentation yesterday and it finally come to this:

King Crimson - Fakctured 0 - 2:30 (Construkction of Light)

Genesis - Fountains Of Salmacais  2:00 - 4:30 (Nursery Cryme)

Altough Fountains of... made some impression on the class (due to certain misunderstanding, the whole class thinks it is Collins on the vocals)...on the other hand frakctured (I might have picked another one) didnt seem to brake the ice.

Anywho, as i were explaning this music, as progressive it turned out that my music teacher (who is female, if anyone cares...) were a huge fan of Samla Mammas Manna!

Take one of the short songs from Starless and bible black and compare that to one of the short songs on The Lamb lies down on Broadway. That'll be just perfect, I promise

In this case it marked out the diffrence between them, with Genesis epical and lyrical touch and, King Crimsons more exprimental guitar oriented sound...

Actually i didnt intended to play something so modern, but since i couldnt find LTINA and SBB, and my red cd had been demolished by my clumsy brother I had no chocie
