This is quite a different collection of the prog spectrum! One of the most popular and also notorious progressive rock bands of the 1970s and one of the biggest pioneers of electronic prog pitted against each other. Give your vote to choose who advances!

Please
: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages (or Youtube if the particular band has no online streaming).

ELP's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=94 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=94
TD's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1295 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1295

As always, discussions are encouraged.

Ouch.

Real, real problem. Two of my top ten albums (ELP and Rubycon). Two superb bands.

Maybe ELP this time, because of the drumming on BSS.

ELP without any question. Tangerine Dream is maybe sometimes nice to listen to, but nothing more. ELP for me has at least three albums I consider classics of progressive rock. The whole electronic direction of progressive rock is something I hardly can get into, and Tangerine Dream is no exception on this. So, it's ELP (who, by the way, will win this!).

I agree; he needs to hear Phaedra, Rubycon, Stratosfear, Force Majeure, and Tangram at the very least. Wink

Of course! That one should be in there too. Oh, and Ricochet... and White Eagle is pretty good too....

Tongue

No clue what my favorite is, but Underwater Sunlight often gets too overlooked because it wasn't from the 70s.

Tangerine Dream!

I could listen all their pre-Exit albums without stoppage... for forever, I guess.

Love also ELP, though.

hum Hard choice! why? because to my both bands were pioneer int he development of the Prog scene. elp However My vote goes for Tangerine Dream Why? because TD made more tasteful and better albums than ELP. Don't get wrong I love ELP albums from their 1 to Works however after works ELP didn't (my personal Opinion)  manage to make good albums after that. their Studios albums were EXTREMELY BORING! with extremely lack of creativity that their early albums had. However Tangerine Dream made some fantastics albums ( tamgram, Exit, until the 80's and recently their creativity had come back. !

It's got to be the Tangs. ELP had their moments, but the Dream were consistently excellent up until Poland, barring the odd slip up like Cyclone. The Franke/Froese/Baumann line up was also brilliant on stage.

Hmm, I've heard a little Tangerine Dream here and there, and from what I've heard of them they've been more than a bit interesting. I've heard plenty of ELP, so I know what they sound like, and yes, they do occasionally get annoying.

Maybe I'll give TD a few more listens before I give a vote.

Hear, hear!Smile

As for the matter at hand, my vote goes to ELP. As uneven as their output may be, they are among the founding fathers of prog as we know it, and in my opinion this should never be forgotten. TD are a very interesting band indeed, but what I have heard (my other half is a big fan of theirs) didn't really rock my world. Electronic music is something I can take in small doses only, I'm afraid.

Leave them , they do not understand what "Love Beach" is about.Behind Lake's tanned chest there is a record which is 50 years beyond it's time and will be praised with greats like : Varese , Ginastera , Piazzolla , Copland and many more.

Probably since this is their most popular time in 30 years they may reconsider and go for a "Works III"LOL
