Suppose your were in charge of creating a progressive rock sampler CD to be sold at a modest price in stores everywhere. The main focus of the project is to raise prog awareness and promote Prog Archives.
The task is simple- what songs would you include in a Prog sampler? Would you ease the uninitiated in with crossover and pop-oriented tracks, or would you throw them in head first with some masterful compositions or spacey experimentation?
Remember, there are time limitations to a CD, so beware of those epic tracks! Keep it under 80 minutes.

As a hint, you might think of songs that got you into this genre in the first place.

Some epics and some shorter tracks
Heart of the Sunrise - Yes The Trees - Rush Red - King Crimson Birdland - Weather Report Squonk - Genesis Meeting of the Spirits - Mahavishnu The Barbarian - ELP Undercover Man - VDGG Any color you Like - Floyd Lady Fantasy - Camel
I think these would be some good songs to start out with for a new prog listener

Great selections, but I know if the first thing I heard from Yes was "Heart of the Sunrise," I think I'd never hear them again. Also, for some reason, "Lady Fantasy" happens to be my least favorite Camel song out of their big three.
Real eclectic list- well done.

This one's quite a tough question, and it would also depend upon my target audience.
I'll try my best.
Kansas- "The Pinnacle" Return to Forever- "Dayride" Rush- "Red Barchetta" King Crimson- "Sartori in Tangier" The Mars Volta- "Ilyena" Ozric Tentacles- "Coily" Genesis- "Supper's Ready" Yes- "Close to the Edge" Porcupine Tree- "Gravity Eyelids"
Does that work? I'm pretty sure it barely fits the time frame. I could always make certain "editions" too, ones that are more for someone from a metal background, hard rock background, classical, jazz, or whatever. It would be easier that way, but as an entry to prog in general I think this is decent.

Gee, Alex...I don't know where to begin.
The Bedlam in Goliath, to a newbie? Really?
"Dad diddley office?"
The first three minutes of "Close to the Edge?" I can see the poor sap hitting the skip button real quick.
You show no mercy, do you? You must be a "get off the fence, jackass," type of guy. I like it!
Can't complain with "The Pinnacle," although I think I have a better Kansas fit- the one that is solely responsible for getting me into (and writing) progressive rock.
I'll post my picks in just a few.

I actually would have loved the Bedlam in Goliath if it was my entry to
prog, I would imagine. It definitely wasn't, but I can see that song
fitting somewhat well.
Well, you did ask for an introduction to prog, so that's what I gave you.
I didn't intend on giving "Prog for Wusses"
It could have been alot worse too; I could have gone Zeuhl or RIO on you.

Ha! Prog isn't for Weenies. You're right. I just recall the first time I heard "Close to the Edge." This will date my knowledge of prog, but I don't care.
I saw Yes early this millennium during their Masterworks Tour. I went to see Kansas, really (the opening act). Yes did eight songs in two hours. They opened with "Close to the Edge." They also played "Ritual" and "Gates of Delerium." I kept looking at friends (who knew less about Yes than I did), asking, "When the hell are they going to quit?"
But the next day, I had these lingering words in my head:
"I get up, I get down. I get up, I get down."
I also could remember fragments of "Starship Trooper."
I jumped on Napster (yeah, that was big back them, and kind of still legal), and downloaded those songs. It took an awful lot of searching, because I didn't know the names of the songs.
I soon went out and tried to find a CD that had the most number of Yes songs (I wanted "Roundabout" and "Your Move" - I knew those), and wound up shelling out about twenty bucks on Yessongs. I didn't know it was live, and was initially disappointed, but over time and over several listens in my car, I have become a fan.

That's partially why I chose some of the songs that I did. It would still capture the audience I wanted to capture even if they didn't initially like the song because they would think about it and then either immediately or eventually go back to it. When I was first getting into prog it was a weird transition for me (like that) with some artists, but for most of them it just took a little bit of analyzing and persistence and I was able to tell that I was uncovering something I'd love for the rest of my life.

A two disc for the price of one would have been easier. One disc was a challenge. Anywho here it is.
Opeth--Ghost of Perdition
King Crimson--Court of the Crimson King
Dream Theater--Pull Me Under
Eloy--Poseidon's Creation
Procupine Tree--Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
Pink Floyd--Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pt. 1
Riverside--Beyond the Eyelids
The Flower Kings--Stardust We Are short version from The Road Back Home

You're absolutely right Alex.
My wife has listened to Yes for almost a decade now. And she still hates them. But it has nothing to do with the music, per se. She hates Jon Anderson's voice, his clothes, his mannerisms, everything. I do NOT have to worry about my wife cheating on me with Jon Anderson.

Hmm... I suppose that's understandable. I absolutely love Anderson's voice, but that's just my preference, and I could see someone not liking it.
He has one of the best voices in "classic" prog, IMO.

I agree, Alex. I got in an argument with a beloved science teacher once about it. He was playing "Loved by the Sun" by Tangerine Dream, and I knew that was Jon Anderson's voice, but he swore it was someone else. Soon after the Masterworks tour, I just knew the guy's voice. You could pick it out of thousand.

It is incredibly unique.
Speaking of Anderson's voice... I was listening to Lizard by King Crimson on the bus ride home today. I forgot how amazing his performance was and just how good that song is too.

No, seriously. I have a love-hate relationship with King Crimson. I don't own Lizard. How is that album, really? I don't like repetitive compositions or noodling.

It is an oddity within the discography, at least somewhat. There's no other KC album quite like it (though Islands fits that uniqueness the most).
Which albums do you have and which ones do you like more?

All right. I've got a sampler to blow your mind.
"Firth of Fifth" (Genesis) "Playing the Game" (Gentle Giant) "Minor Giant Steps" (The Flower Kings) "Jerusalem" (ELP) "A Song Within a Song" (Camel) "Miracles Out of Nowhere" (Kansas) "Eriatarka" (The Mars Volta) "Red" (King Crimson) "Starship Trooper" (Yes) "Go the Way You Go" (Spock's Beard)
Ten worthy tracks under eighty minutes. I'd buy it! I'd buy two!

If I had to choose one King Crimson album, I'd be stuck choosing among three I rather like quite a bit.
In the Wake of Poseidon Red The Power to Believe
It would be tough with those. I have the debut, and I think it's HIGHLY overrated. It's noisy, repetitive (not bad, just noisy and repetitive). I have Discipline, and I like it okay, but it's a little too 1980's in it's sound. I also love the middle songs on Larks' Tongues in Aspic, but I despise the bookend instrumentals.

Hmm... that's a tough one then, especially since you seem to pick and choose from certain eras. Starless and Bible Black is more experimental than Larks' and Red; you could get that but I'm not sure. I guess Lizard would be a good choice, but it's hard to say. The vocals aren't pleasant either (I much prefer Belew or Wetton to Haskell), but the music is pretty damn good. It's their most jazz influenced one directly, maybe? Yeah, I'd say that.
It all depends on how many times you've heard those albums. Maybe they'll grow on you more, I'm not sure.

The following would be a good Britich prog sampler. I haven't checked the times but they would be about right.
Karelia Suite - The Nice
And You and I - Yes
Refugees - Van der Graaf Generator
Song for Europe - Roxy Music
Evening over Rooftops - Edgar Broughton Band
Beware the Ides of March - Colosseum
One of these Days - Pink Floyd
Endless Enigma - ELP
Queen of Dreams - Strawbs
Musical Box - Genesis
Epitaph - King Crimson

Ok, with the task of 'bringing in new listeners' in mind, I chose mostly newer shorter songs with a few older songs for posterity's sake.
1) Blackest Eyes - Porcupine Tree (catchy, easily obtainable with lyrics that will grab the attention of today's youth) 2) Black Light Machine - Frost* (incredibly upbeat song, once again, the intro loop makes you want to listen) 3) Roses - RPWL (once you pulled them in with the first two drop the tempo a bit, let them mellow out to Ray Wilson's earthy voice) 4) The Colors Changed - Sylvan (Here's where you break their heart, make sure that the CD indicates this is part of an epic piece with an intriguing storyline.) 5) June - Spock's Beard (one of my least favorite Beard songs yet one of the most accessible) 6) Panic Room - Riverside (Wake them back up, heavy guitar riffs, lush keys and Mariuz Duda's voice, I've taken the last minute of the song, the self portraits bit out for time) 7) Dark Star - Fish (should be a James Bond theme, terribly majestic) 8) Cinema Show / Aisle of Plenty - Genesis (2008 mix) (ok, now that we've carried them along this far, here's a throw back into more serious prog. The new recording should help this sound on par with the rest of the sampler). 9) Misunderstood - Dream Theater (After Cinema Show we go back to something more accessible. I'm also dropping out the last three minutes for time and because it kills the whole accessibility bit). 10) I am the Sun, Part 2 - The Flower Kings - I'd drop the last five minutes or so, just the 'baby elephant bit and the minute or two after that, very accessible, makes you smile and making people fee good makes them want more). 11) Guiding Light - IQ (Great song, easily accessible vocal theme, wonderful instrumental section followed by the perfect ending, the ending works very well but it is so abrupt that it leaves you wanting more).
With the cuts I'm pretty close to 80 minutes, with enough finagling you could get this list onto a 80 minute CD.
Last minute cuts included 'Wish You Where Here' - Vanden Plas and 'Schism' - Tool. Wanted to include a few harder items but just ran out of space.
Enjoy

Good list Roland. I just might have to make that into a compilation album. My one suggestion along the same thinking would be to add a song from Pure Reason Revolution, although I'm not quite sure which one, and I'm not sure which song I'd replace since I like all of them that you listed.

King Crimson - Fallen Angel (absolutely has to be first)
Henry Cow - War
Gentle Giant - Just the Same (or at least I think that's what it's called)
Comus - Diana
Robert Wyatt - Last Straw
Mr. Bungle - The Holy Filament
Area - Cometa Rossa
etc etc etc, the idea being to introduce people to non-AOR Radio prog in this case.

Thanks Rushfan, Actually, the first iteration did have 'Goshen's Remains' from the Pure Reason Revolution on it (along with 'Solid as the Sun' of Neal Morse fame).
Slightly off subject, I picked up the Pure Reason Revolution CD from a used shop based on someone's recommendation from the forums here. I forget who it was that mentioned it, probably either you (Rushfan) or E-Dub as my tastes seem to mimic both of yours.
Nonetheless, who ever it was, Thanks, I really enjoy the CD

Great idea, Robert. I won't make any attempt to ease a new listener in gently. My cd is as follows:-
ELP - Karn Evil 9 1st Impression
Hawkwind - Assault & Battery/The Golden Void
Yes- And You and I
Rush - Jacob's Ladder
IQ - Leap of Faith
Tangerine Dream - Mysterious Semblance at The Strand of Nightmares
Genesis - Cinema Show
Porcupine Tree - The Moon Touches Your Shoulder
Pink Floyd - Sheep
The Flower Kings - The Merrygoround
My cd has a bonus free cd of epics too:-
Todd Rundgren's Utopia - Theme From Utopia
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Genesis - Firth Of Fifth
The Flower Kings - Stardust We Are
Yes - Awaken
Now, that would be some sampler!!

Alifib are a particularly great band. Their homage to Robert Wyatt is inspirational and a real collectors item. I couldn't find a link on Youtube unfortunately.

I adore Alifib. I would never dare to put it as a sampler for new prog listeners (and I experienced that with my ex-wife many years ago).
My idea would be to put melodic songs and rock songs that are a bit more complicated and show that such music can be much more enjoyable than the regular radio staff. I'll avoid any tough Krautrock, zeuhl or Avant-garde. I guess most of my list will be from the 70's cause I know these much better.
1. Deep purple - blind
2. Moody blues - Melencholy man
3. Kansas - Miracles out of nowhere
4. Camel - Rhayader
5. Caravan - Winter wine
6. Genesis - Get'em out by friday
7. Pink floyd - Shine on your crazy diamond pt 1-5
8. Jethro Tull - Locomotive breath
9. King crimson - I talk to the wind
10. Renaissance - Mother Russia
11. Strawbs - The hangman and the papist
12. Spirogyra - Love is a very funny thing
13. Jefferson airplane - Wooden ships
14. Talking heads - Listening wind
15. Magma - Troller tanz (ghost dance)
16. Amon duul II - Henrietta Krotenshvanz.
None of them is my favorite but they are all very good songs to start with IMO.

|
The first 3 minutes of CTTE is the only interesting part of the whole album, and I thought that when I still primarily listened to Pink Floyd. I don't understand the people saying it sucks (well they used to) or saying It's so difficult. It's not RIO or free jazz or 20th century classical here, people...

Understood, Mr. Plainview.
And I don't believe the first three minutes to "Close to the Edge" suck. I believe it would take quite a bit of fortitude for someone new to progressive rock to listen to.
I'll freely admit that the first (several!) times I heard it, I had to resist the urge to skip straight to the vocals. In fact, the first few times I did. Now I consider it one part of a masterpiece, but I think that has something to do with being able to follow it note for note.
Progressive rock takes more discipline to enjoy than mainstream rock music- it requires effort on the part of the listener instead of just effort from the musicians.

I'm assuming my target audience is someone ignorant of the prog classics but musically open-minded and curious. So to introduce them:
1 - Firth of Fifth - Genesis (9 minutes)
2 - Time - Pink Floyd (7 - 16)
3 - I Am the Walrus - Beatles (4 - 20)
4 - Yours is no Disgrace (live version) - Yes (14 - 34)
5 - Take a Pebble - ELP (12 - 46)
6 - the last 9 minutes or so from side 1 of Thick as a Brick (just after the amost inaudible organ leading into "I've come down from the upper class" (9 - 55)
7 - 2000 Light Years From Home - Rolling Stones (5 - 60)
8 - Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson (9 - 69)
9 - The Musical Box (live) - Genesis (11 - 80)
I'm 2Within the classic bands, I tried to go for a variety of styles and instruments, while choosing fairly accessible numbers (Firth of Fifth, Time). I don't think any intro sampler would be complete without the granddaddy of prog, Courth of the Crimson King and I tried to get some powerful guitar-based songs like No Disgrace and Musical Box just so no one would think that prog was too effete. I'm sorry I couldn't squeeze a Renaissance song in their but time was a big factor. And I did want to show that the Stones and Beatles had a role in prog's roots.
If you don't like this album, you won't like prog.

It is incredibly unique.
Speaking of Anderson's voice... I was listening to Lizard by King Crimson on the bus ride home today. I forgot how amazing his performance was and just how good that song is too.

Thanks for mentioning your lizard.

Lizard is a truly weird album. Jazzy, frequently improvised, but always very directed and clever with the interplay. It took me a bloody long time to get, that's certain, particularly the jazzy songs in the middle of the album. Fripp pulls out the most bizarre and interesting guitar parts ever (particularly acoustics) and the Anderson guest vocal is perfect. Haskell's vocals take a while to catch on, but their theatricality ends up helping the album eventually, and his bass-work is fantastic.
Anyway, great playing, beyond experimental, not repetitive or noodling by my standards, but certainly not for everyone.
