From an idea borrowed from elsewhere. Set your MP3 (or 4) player to random play, then list the first ten tracks it plays for you. From this rate yourself as follows (we can fine tune this as we go along):

1*: one track minded - >50% the same band
2*: superior one track minded - ten different bands but all of the same genre
3*: mildly musically tolerant - ten different bands some of the same genre, but a second random test has at least of 1 those bands come up again.
4*: somewhat eclectic - ten different bands that don't appear on a second round of randomness, totalling no more than 5 different genres.
5*: really eclectic - ten different bands that don't appear on a second round of randomness, totalling  more than 5 different genres and including one genre from classical, reggae, punk, rap, world music, traditional anglo-celtic folk .
StarNEW RULEStar: the WCS Rule: i.e.the worst set of 10 tracks from 2 generated, counts!!

Please publish your random ten and give yourself a star rating

Oceansize - Rinsed - Psychedelic
The Seven Mile Journey - Theme for the Elthenbury Massacre - Post
Transit - Long Song - Post
VDGG - Lifetime - Eclectic
Amon Duul II - Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies: Pull Down Your Mask - Krautrock
PF - A Saucerful of Secrets - Pyschedelic
Marillion - Blind Curve/Vocal Under a Bloodkight/Pssing Strangers/Mylo/Perimeter Wa - Neo
Dun - Bitonio - Zeuhl
Pineapple Thief - What Have We Sown? - Crossover
Jethro Tull - Cold Wind to Valhalla  - Prog Folk

I guess that is better than a 4**** (more than 5 genres) but not quite a 5***** (does not include rap, punk, etc.)

Cool idea.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Stargazers - Khan
Sun In The Night - Brand X
A Louse Is Not A Home - Peter Hammill
South Side Of The Sky - Yes
Moon In June - Soft Machine
A Farewell To Kings - Rush
White Feather - Marillion
Ïma Süri Dondaï - Magma
Dixie - Harmonium

3, a few of the same bands show up on a second round.

Living In The Past - Jethro Tull (pop)
World Of Pain - Cream (psych rock)
Hotel Hobbies - Marillion (progressive rock)
That Time Of The Night - Marillion (progressive rock)
Web Weavers - Hawkwind (psych rock)
Duulirium - Amon Duul II (psychedelia)
Lady Of The Dancing Water - King Crimson (jazz, perhaps? No idea what to call it.)
Is She Waiting - McDonald And Giles (pop)
Court And Spark - Joni Mitchell (genres?!)
Biko - Peter Gabriel (progressive world)

Bit of an unfortunate selection... somewhat biased since my classical and (somewhat limited) jazz isn't on the I-pod due to size constraints.

A toss-up of psychedelia, psych rock, quirky pop, pop and jazz, plus a world and a progressive track thrown in for kicks. Marillion features twice. Second test featured Crimson again. Probably comes up as a 3ish. I'm bad at assigning genres to things.

Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
The Police - Walking on the Moon
Thinking Plague - This Weird Wind
Soft Machine - Virtually, Part 2
One Shot - I Had a Dream
Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore
Incubus - Have You Ever
Amon Duul 2 - Pale Gallery
Spock's Beard - Waste Away
Gryphon - Opening Move

Looks like maybe 3 stars

I love being to put my whole collection on shuffle.  Well Zune, what have you to offer up:
One to One, Joe Jackson, Beat Crazy
Penny Hitch, Soft Machine, Seven
Sea Journey, Stanley Clarke, Children of Forever
Moodles, Stereolab, Oscillions from the Anti-Sun
Snail Hair Dune, Torn/Karn/Bozzio, Polytown
The National Anthem, Radiohead, Kid A
Rumplestiltskin, Andy Summers, The Last Dance of Mr. X
Karma Police, Radiohead, OK Computer
Walk on...No Pussyfooting, King Crimson, The Great Deceiver
Black Country Woman, Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti

Hey, what's up with two Radioheads out of 15,224 tracks? OK Zune, one more:
Greensleeves [Alternate Take 6], Vince Guaraldi, A Charlie Brown Christmas

Wait, second round:
Impossible Guitar, Phil Manzanera, Primitive Guitars
Coyote, Joni Mitchell, Shadows and Light
Ellington's Way, Jan Akkerman, From the Basement

Sleeping Beauty - Character Step, Tchaikovsky, Tchaikovsky/Borodin Classical Masterpieces
La Plus que Lente, Debussy, Debussy Piano Music
No Absolute Time, No Absolute Time, Jean-Luc Ponty
Bone Fire, Soft Machine, Seven
Mystical Adventures, Pt. 5, Jean-Luc Ponty, Mystical Adventures
Ballet Volta, Sky, Sky

Sometimes you get weird coincidences, two classical tracks and two Ponty and between the two groups of ten, two from the same album.

I'd put that at a 4, I think.

Just for fun, let's see what round three turns up:
Wavelength, The Bears, The Bears
Untitled Track 22, The Residents, Demons Dance Alone
Bad Shepherds, The Zincs, Dimmer
The Funky Avacado, Michael Hedges, Breakfast In the Field
Why Don't We Do It in the Road?, The Beatles, The Beatles[White Album]

Vinydjapana (Dolphin), Yothu Yindi, Tribal Voice
Outcas Islands, Jerry Goodman, It's Alive
Lateshow: A/Midnight Days, Henry Fool, Henry Fool
The Soul of a Child, Tower of Power, In The Slot

One last run at it.  This time from the last 100 albums I added to my collection:
Sing, Gongzilla, Suffer
Propositions, Curved Air, Alive 1990
Survivalism, NIN, Year Zero
5 Ghosts I, NIN, Ghosts I-IV
Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Radiohead, In Rainbows
Twenty Years on (Intro)
Awakening, The Reasoning, The Awakening
Scratching at Success, Rupert Hine, Immunity
Wolf Stalks, Jack Lancaster and Robin Lumley, Peter and the Wolf
Bodysnatchers, Radiohead, In Rainbows

Is this thing in a mood to play Radiohead or something? LOL
They issued an update to the software recently.  Maybe they gave it desires.

That's five stars and really quite eclectic, isn't it?

Right after the short Blupp, Morton Feldman's stunning The Viola of My Life IV started. My shuffle's in a really sophisticated, almost snobby mood today.

3*: mildly musically tolerant

I have 162 artists on there, and 666 albums (not my fault, just coincidence) and 7064 songs.
It says 22 genres but thats a lie, its more Metal + sub genres, Rock + Subgenres, 1 Opera (Ca Ira) and two or three country or pop songs that have snuck in there.

Iron Maiden - Flash Of The Blade
Jimi Hendrix - Rainy Day, Dream Away
Def Leppard - Rock Rock ('Til You Drop)

And just for kicks, here's another 10.

Scorpions - China White
Megadeth - The Conjuring
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Masterplan - I'm Not Afraid
Metallica - Escape
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
Ayreon - Computer Eyes
The Beatles - Please Please Me

3* - It's all rock, and mostly metal, but there's plenty of variation within it - plenty of different metal subgenres, mostly traditional, power, prog, and thrash. The Beatles and Ayreon were bound to come back up, since I have the entire discographies of both bands.

First post - hi, everyone! Big smile

Fun topic, Dick Whittington!

Shocked Jeez -- judging by the majority of those lists, I seem to be hanging around with a bunch of proghole weirdos!  You mean this isn't the Allmusic forum? ConfusedWink

Okay, I have 8581 tracks in my I-pod. I have been playing it on random shuffle for the past week or so, as it happens, to see how far I can go.  (I'm now somewhere around track 1250.)

My entire collection is in there: some 1200 or so disks, with lots of rock/pop (various sub-genres), lots of folk/Celtic, perhaps 10% "prog," plus healthy doses of world, reggae, new age, blues, country, classical, & a smattering of opera, etc -- a pretty eclectic & varied mix. As far as genres go, I like to keep things simple – I’m currently in the process of reassigning some genres. For example, I’m listing all of my “alternative & punk” simply as “rock,” because that’s what it is, and I want those artists to play together when I shuffle “rock” – the largest genre in there, by far.

My I-pod must have sensed I was doing this for PA, though, because normally prog artists (or those listed as such on PA – on my I-pod, they’re just “rock”) are far between on shuffle play.

My first ten went as follows:

The Cars – All Mixed Up (new wave – rock)

Jethro Tull – Look Into the Sun (“prog” on PA, but this track is really just rock)

Odds – Night’s Embrace (alternative – rock)

Eno – The Fat Lady of Limbourg (prog – rock)

Handel – Overture/Allegro, from Concerto Grosso Op. 6 (baroque – classical)

Umphrey’s McGee – Uncommon (prog – rock)

Steve Best – Monto (Newfoundland – folk)

Anthony Phillips – Which Way the Wind Blows (prog – rock)

Echo and the Bunnymen – All I Want (new wave – rock)

Altan – A Nobleman’s Wedding (Irish traditional/Celtic – folk)

The 2nd time around, there was less prog:

Cass Elliot – Make Your Own Kind of Music (rock)

Peter Gabriel – Games Without Frontiers (prog – rock)

Blondie – Call Me (new wave – rock)

The Byrds – Mr Spaceman (rock)

Dissidenten - Radio Arabia (world)

Niamh Parsons - Closer to You (contemporary Celtic/pop – folk)

Holly Cole Trio - Cry (If You Want To) (jazz)

Steeleye Span – The Ups and Downs (prog folk – folk rock – folk)

Kim Mitchell – Rock ‘n’ Roll Duty (rock)

Los Lobos – El Gusto (not your typical blues-rock from these Mexican Americans, but rather an all-acoustic traditional song, thus obviously folk – but as it’s Latino, I suppose it’s “world”)

I get a pretty darned varied/eclectic mix on shuffle play – more so than it might appear, with my tendency to simplify and re-label genres! Smile

Despite all of the 'rock,' I think I'm easily a "5" on your scale, Dickie-Bird! Big smile

Note that none of my reggae, new age, country or blues showed up -- this time.

Come on this a soppy game, does it matter? This is a feelgood, massage your ego type of thing. Some arbitrary  measures have been adopted to determine whether you're 'narrow minded' or 'eclectic'. And then most people have their own estimates of what does and doesn't fit a genre.

based on the parameters above, I'm a strong 4.5
in reality, I'd say I'm 6*: (eclectic to the point of ridiculousness) biggrin.gif

7. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Thousand Island Park(jazz fusion)
8. Syd Barrett - Long Gone(prog related)
9. Gentle Giant - An Inmates Lullaby(eclectic prog)
10. Pink Floyd - Bring the Boys Back Home(space/psych)

Second Round:

8. Pink Floyd - Pow R. Toc H.(space/psych)
9. Syd Barrett - She took a Long Cold Look(prog related)
10. Soft Machine - Out Bloody Rageous(canterbury scene)

According to the ratings I guess I have around a 3 or 4, having 3 of the same bands come up in both rounds, although there were 6 different genres in the second round, unless all the different genres of prog rock are considered prog.

Note: I have set my mp3 player to random and have had it play 2 songs from the same album in a row, so I question the randomness of it sometimes.

I also have noticed that due to the fact that I Put both cds of PF- The Wall together it plays tracks from that album often.

But I do count Kraftwerk, Miles Davis and Captain Beefheart as three.

Have to add to the daft rules, the WCS Rule: i.e.the worst set of 10 generated, counts!!

I've got over 4000 tracks from 1200 album loaded, and especilly when I programme for an new random shuffle, I can guarantee two tracks from the same album will come up within 5 to 15 tracks - but when the IPod has got that out of its system, the worse I suffer if the same genre of music, as two in a row, otherwise tracks from an album are not duplicated for quite some time.

Posted By: NotSoKoolAid

My Ipod is kinda old in my mind, as I don't use it that much anymore but it is a decent representative of my music collection. I got an 80GB right when it came out so these results are for the most part pretty unrelated to each other.

Attempt 1:

Tantric – Breakdown

The Syn – The Promise

Simon and Garfunkel – Scarborough Fair Canticle

Live – waitress

The Doors – My Wild Love

Porcupine Tree – Up The Downstair

Toto – Good for You

Acoustic Alchemy – Reference Point

Mark May – Icehouse Special

Electric Masada – Kisofim

Attempt 2:

The Beatles – Cry Baby Cry

King Crimson – Vroom

Rush – Seven and Seven Is

Def Leppard – White Lightning

Yes – Heart of the Sunrise

Mark Hollis – The Daily Planet

Jim White – Borrowed Wings

Free – Muddy Water

The Who – Sensation

Volta Do Mar – Another Air Strike Called Love

Not a TON of prog, but certainly a dose. Prog, blues, postrock, hardrock, poprock, classic rock/psych, avant-garde jazz fusion, 80's hair, and smooth jazz. Got a lot more then that too ;)

That was interesting, good idea.

Random = Shuffle songs option on IPod. But any player (like Creative Zen or Winamp. Haven't found this function on iTunes) where you can choose random play of you're full mp3 collection will do.

Just read the rest of Dick's opening post.

Nice idea Dick - I've often thought one way to get to know a stranger is to take his/her iPod & stick it on shuffle.

What this says about me though...

1 - Pogo (System Of A Down) Metal, pure metal!
2 - Tae The Beggin' (Battlefield Band) Good old diddly dee folk
3 - The Sky Is Crying (Gary Moore) Heavy blues (and a fab live version)
4 - Maze (Phish) Jazzy prog from the masters of improvisation
5 - Mother (Pink Floyd) Could be considered prog... not keen on the song, though
6 - The Divine Unity (Slackbaba) Dubby chilled out electronica - super cool
7 - Cocaine Blues (Johnny Cash) Live at Fulsome Prison - the man in black addresses some personal issues
8 - In Every Home A Heartache (Roxy Music) Weird & wonderful
9 - Aerials (System Of A Down) Bang that head again
10 - Charting The Single (Marillion) Live at Reading 1983 (not my favorite track from the CD though)

[edit]

If I understand the rules correctly, that brings me in on a 3 for the first shuffle.

Sorry, I don't do single tracks, only albums. Although I shuffle albums I can't remember what my last 20 were. I play my mp3 less in the winter months but listen to more CDs.
Probably between 2 & 3

Posted By: ColonelClaypool

First 10:

Likbør - Windir (Black Metal)

Seeing Things - Black Crowes (Blues Rock)

Could I've Been So Blind - Black Crowes (Blues Rock)

The Suffering - Coheed and Cambria (Prog Related)

50 Million Year Trip - Kyuss (Stoner Rock)

Ultimate Trip - Riverside (Prog Metal)

Exciter - Strapping Young Lad (Extreme Metal)

Nobody's Fault But Mine - Led Zeppelin (Classic Rock/Prog Related)

Benighted - Opeth (Tech/Extreme Prog Metal)

Bavarian Skies - Flower Kings (Symphonic Prog)

I hardly ever use the shuffle function as I prefer listening to albums in their entirety, but it's rather fun to do for this purpose.

Next 10:

Lex Talionis - Akercocke (Death Metal)

Reach Down - Temple of the Dog (Grunge)

Birds of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra (Jazz Rock/Fusion)

Intestinal Incubation - Necrophagist (Death Metal)

Dirty Love - Frank Zappa (RIO/Avant-Prog)

Don't Leave Me Now - Pink Floyd (Psychedelic/Space Rock)

Empty Spaces - Pink Floyd (Psychedelic/Space Rock)

Infant Phenomenon - No-Man (Psychedelic/Space Rock)

Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd (Psychedelic/Space Rock)

Angry Chair - Alice In Chains (Grunge)

Second list is a bit skewed in favor of Psych/Space Rock, due to 3 of 10 songs being Pink Floyd. Still, it's a decent enough mix. I'd say it's a 4+ but not quite 5 stars.

Opeth - Bleak "The Roundhouse Tapes"  Progressive Death Metal
Mystic Prophecy - Evil of Destruction "Satanic Curses"  Power Metal
The Lamp of Thoth - I Love The Lamp "Portents, Omens, & Doom"  Doom Metal
Sear Bliss - Path to The Motherland "The Arcane Odyssey"  Black Metal
Monster Magnet - Temple of Your Dreams "Powertrip"  Stoner Metal
Rage Against The Machine - Testify "The Battle of Los Angeles"  Hard Rock
Cypress Hill - Intro "Skull & Bones" (Skull disc)  Rap

Attila Csihar - Chanceless Religion [Live] (Plasma Pool) "The Beast of Attila Csihar"  Black Metal
Flotsam and Jetsam - U.L.S.W. "Doomsday For the Deceiver"  Thrash Metal

Not so bad, predominately metal though. \m/

According to the second round though, I guess I would score a 4; the second round had again predominately metal, but it did have one song by Heart and it had one track of stand-up.  If you're not counting the sub-genres of metal then I would get 1 or 2 probably.

Here's the second round for the record:

Metal Church - Mass Hysteria "This Present Wasteland"  Thrash Metal
Mucc - 2.07 "Kuchiki no Tou"  J-Rock
Bulldozer - Mad Man "The Day of Wrath"  Black/Heavy Metal
Cathedral - Melancholy Emperor "The Serpent's Gold"  Doom Metal
Andy Andrist - The Carnival "Dumb It Down For the Masses"  Stand-up
Heart - Heartless "These Dreams: Heart's Greatest Hits"  Classic Rock
Iron Maiden - The Number of The Beast "The Number of The Beast"  NWOBHM
Death SS - Walpurgisnacht "Heavy Demons"  Proto-Black/Thrash Metal
Darkthrone - Pervertor of the 7 Gates "F.O.A.D."  Black Metal w/ Crust influences
Vital Remains - Reborn... the Upheaval of Nihility "Icons of Evil"  Death Metal

What can I say, I am a diehard metalhead. \m/

I've been consciously loading my mp3 player with albums that are highly rated on PA.   I started with the top 250 overall (that I own, which comes up to about a third of them) and then started on highly rated albums in each genre.  This project is far from completed, but out of 1038 tracks, these ten came up.

Peter Gabriel -- More Than This
Magma -- Kobaia Iss De Hundin
Pink Floyd -- Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Tangerine Dream -- Movements of a Visionary
Gentle Giant -- His Last Voyage
Banco Del Mutuo Succorso -- Ed Oro Lo Domando Tempo Al Tempo
Pink Floyd -- Any Colour You Like
Peter Hammill -- The Lie (Bernini's Saint Theresa)
Soft Machine -- The Floating World
Refugee -- Someday

Almost filled my 80gig Ipod, with 8500 tunes from 1250 albums, so in theory more weird eclectism???? Here goes:

Beyond The Bridge: Gambale, Hamm, Smith (ex. Show Me What You Can Do)
Rambler: Ginger Baker Trio (ex. Going Back Home)
Sweet Bite: George Duke (ex. My Soul)
Mutoid man : Ozone Quartet (ex.Nocturne)
Ride A Pony: Free (ex. Highway)
Heyday: Nucleus (ex. Snakehips Etecera)
Oysterjungle: Secret Oyster (ex. Sea Son)
Oregon: Ghost Beads (ex.The Essential oregon)
Madness: Adrian Belew (ex. Side One)
Elergy: Jeff Beal (ex. Liberation)

Oh dear, 7 from ten I would say were jazz rock fusion tracks.......odd, this morning  had 5 consequetive tracks which were blues, followed by modern flamenco. Sometime wonder about how 'shuffle' play is achieved on an IPod - it's never quite as random as I think.

Got to reset the shuffle: and here's the result:
Checking Out: Allan Holdsworth (ex. IOU)
Bird On A Wire: Leonard Cohen (ex. Songs From A Room)
Night Illusion: Gong (ex. Gauzeuse)
Tiger Feet: Mud (ex. Greatest Hits) - whoops
Compared To What: Les McCann/Eddie Harris (ex. Swiss Movement)
Divisions: Fire Merchants (ex. Fire Merchants)
Good Day Good Morning: Odyssey (ex. White Swan)
Mille Vagues: Nguyen Le (ex. Million Waves)
Bitter Suite: Marillion (ex. Misplaced Childhood)
SF Sorrow Is Born: Pretty Things (ex. SF Sorrow)

still heavy on the jazz rock .....

My iPod really only has about half of my library, it's way too small for me.

Pavement - Trigger Cut / Wounded-Kite at :17 (Indie Rock)
The Fall of Troy - Semi-Fiction (Heavy Prog)
Joy Division - 24 Hours (Post-punk)
Protest the Hero - Blindfolds Aside (Progressive Metalcore)
Neu! - Weissenssee (Krautrock)
Rush - Something For Nothing (Heavy Prog)
Porcupine Tree - Remember Me Lover (Heavy Prog)
Phish - Guyute (Jam Rock)
The Flower Kings - Dream On Dreamer (Symphonic Prog)
My Bloody Valentine - Blown a Wish (Shoegaze)

That didn't really come out as varied as I'd have liked it to. Not to mention that its 40% non-prog. I'm not sure. I'd say 3*

9. Only Time Will Tell - Earth and Fire (prog)
10. At Sixes - Soft Machine (jazz/fusion/prog)

The genres were just grudgingly assigned by me, but the first list is clearly punk-centric, which was a surprise.  Lots of "indie rock" on both too.  Interesting observation - a lot of the actual running time on my iPod (over 14,000 songs) could be called prog, but those songs are generally longer than the punk stuff, so there are probably a lot more punk selections to choose from - thus a random shuffle would be more likely to pick from that pool.  Perhaps?

I'll give these lists a collective "3".

Charly García- La Ruta de Tentempié (Argentine 80s pop rock)
La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros- Ruta Perdedora (Argentine symphonic rock)
Curtis Mayfield- No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) (70s soul)
Alan Parsons Project- Eye in the Sky  (Pop prog)
Kraftwerk- Frank Schubert (Electronic)

Frank Zappa- Beat it with your Fist (Uh, rock guitar solo)

Look pretty average in terms of eclecticism. A good 3, since the Zappa tracks are quite different.

I can't do that, my iPod has been watching Steven Wilson's documentary and now it won't let me use the shuffle. It's afraid of being smashed into pieces with a hammer by some evil pale guy with spectacles. It actually wakes up screaming and sweaty every night. Only whole albums from now on, it says, to play it safe and orthodox.

This is a great excuse to listen to 20 different songs without stopping:
1)Fires (which burn brightly) - Procol Harum (Crossover Prog)
2)Closer To Believing - ELP (Pop ballad by a symphonic prog band)
3)Sweet Song - Ktzat Acheret (Israeli Eclectic Prog)
4)Yeti Talks to Yogi (Improvisation) - Amon Düül II (Krautrock)
5)Consecutive Seconds - Thelonious Monk (Jazz)
6)Stargazer - Rainbow (Hard Rock/Heavy Metal)
7)So Alone Today - Churchills (Mediterranean/Israeli/Psych/Rock...Proto Prog?)
8)Ghetto of Beautiful Things - Kevin Gilbert (Eclectic Prog - with rap vocals?)
9)Living Space - Moraz & Bruford (Fusion/Avant-Garde)
10)Summertime - Big Brother & The Holding Company (Classic Rock/Psychedelic/Acid Rock)

Second round:

1)Put A Spell On You - Townshend/Gilmour (Blues/Rock & Roll)
2)Crystal City - Steve Hillage (Canterbury Scene)
3)...Maybe I'll Lend You Mine After All - Brand X (Fusion/Jazz-Rock)
4)Breath and Length - The Residents (Avant Prog)
5)Soledad - RC2 (Prog Metal/Symphonic/Eclectic)
6)Karma Police - Radiohead (Alternative Rock)
7)For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me - Jethro Tull (Folk Prog)
8)Limelight - Rush (Hard Prog)
9)Theme (Paganini Caprice in A Minor No.24 and Variations 1-4) - Andrew Lloyd Webber (Symphonic/Fusion with Classical intro)
10)Going To California - Led Zeppelin (Folk song played by a Classic Rock band)

So I think 4(somewhat eclectic) or 4.5 (considering the "rap" lyrics provided by Gilbert, Jethro Tull's and Zeppelin's folk, Webber's Clasical Intro and the world music bits delivered by the Churchills and Ktzat Acheret - no punk or reggae)

If it was suggested you put other bands on, would you get the hump??

The only Camel I have on mine is from an early Peter Frampton album with that name.
