It's interesting to see how many people like both bands - I've got a lot of time for Rush myself, although I mainly like them for the AFTK - Moving Pictures sequence of albums.

A no-brainer for me. I never really understood why so many people on this site are so excited about Rush. Before I came here I did not even think of them as "prog"; I had filed them under "hard rock". That may have to do with the way they were marketed in Germany. I don't recall anyone calling Rush a prog band here.

While I'm about as interested in Magma as I am in Rush - that is not very much - this can very well be reversed into "I never really understood why so many people on this site are so excited about Magma". I believe the whole "We sing in an allegedly weird 'space' language" - gimmick is a major part of it.
As someone who speaks a much, much weirder language every day (only half-joking here) and has heard some absolutely beautiful unearthly languages that were very much human languages, Kobaian leaves me cold.
The music? It's ok, rarely better. Break it down into its individual components (fairly easy, Magma's music is hardly as seamless as some might think), and you will wind up with much more interesting music.

Both of these bands leave me quite cold. They can actually even annoy me from time to time. Still I think Rush is the semi-clear winner, because they've made some really good tunes too. Serves Magma right for making "Troller Tanz".

Just to make it clear: I do not doubt they belong here. But that does not change the fact that I had always thought of Rush as a hard rock band before I came here. No-one I knew considered them to be a prog band. Not that anybody used the term "progressive rock" anyway; I sincerely doubt the term already existed at all in the 70s. People just never compared them to, for example, Genesis or Yes, they compared them to Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin. And keep in mind that "hard rock" is a lot more than "playing loud and heavy" all the time. I considered Led Zeppelin to be a hard rock band too, and there are many Led Zeppelin songs with lots of quiet passages. But I never saw that as a contradiction.

To each their own, but my line of thinking towards Magma tends to agree with this paraphrasing.
As far as my vote goes, no surprises there, as it was a forgone conclusion from the get-go as to where my vote would go.

Not surprisingly, I voted for Magma.
I could throw out one-liners such as "Magma iss de hundin," or "Theusz Hamtaahk, mm, Theusz Hamtaahk", but it would not do Magma justice. I adore that band, and for me it's one of the most transcendent bands in the archives.

Rush is Rush indeed.
Rush was great when I was on the periphery of progressive music. Now they just sort of take up space. I think I listened to Caress of Steel once this year, and that was it for Rush. Listened to AFTK and Hemi last year to do reviews.
Magma on the other hand has grown more and more over the years. Their genre has opened doors to some incredible bands from around the world.

Don't particularly care either way. Rush did a couple of classic albums. Magma did a couple as well. Both receive extremely devoted fans. Don't think either are as good as the fans seem to...

It's a tough poll for me because each band appeals to a completely different listening "sector" of my brain; if I'm in the mood for Magma, I probably wouldn't want to listen to Rush that day (or at least right after), and vice versa - I get in these listening "moods" (as I suspect most here do) and as such it would appear to me incongruous to play a record by each of these bands back to back. They each have qualities the other one lacks, for me, (i.e. don't bother isolating this sentence and flaming it).
I like that the prog "universe", in so much as it's defined here at PA, encompasses so many artists with such disparate approaches and sound that I can usually find something prog which can scratch whatever music itch I currently have.

Please.
Magma = overly-genius music which can't be enjoyed more than a few hours every month
Rush = enjoyable music which can be enjoyed every day, as long as your ear withstands the extra-high frequencies that G. Lee's voice is capable of producing...

Magma is a great band but sometimes is very self indulgent and annoying specially when the none stop chanting starts. so my vote goes for The Awesome Trio from CANADA........which I dedicated my last collage.. |
Bingo! The very mention of that chanting makes me want to vote for Rush, and I think I will.

I'm really impressed that Magma is relatively near from Rush. I thought it would be like "three digits over one digit" defeat. Against all odds we tried, but Rush is just... too popular...

Me too - if you'd tried this poll on here 3 or 4 years ago it would have been a very different story. Given that Rush is a much more popular and famous band (they even had hit singles hither and yon) whose albums probably sell 10 times as many as Magma's it's even more remarkable. It's also been nice to see a fair amount of respect going both ways, and (as I posted earlier) a lot of people who enjoy both bands.

up until today (and for the past 30 years), i'd have chosen Rush. but i've been listening to Magma all day and they have finally conquered me. it's taken me a couple of years to "get" Magma, but now that I have, they have catapulted to near the very top of my prog canon. i mean, they are up there with the big boys: Yes, Genesis and King Crimson. at least for me.
now i've been a big Rush fan since i was 11 years old, so this choice is not easy....but Magma it is.

I like that the prog "universe", in so much as it's defined here at PA, encompasses so many artists with such disparate approaches and sound that I can usually find something prog which can scratch whatever music itch I currently have.

From what I have heard which is little I am liking Magma. It might be from being overexposed to Rush on the radio all these years.
