Subject: My Top 5 Countries for Prog

Here is a list of my top 5 countries that have produced excellent prog bands over the years,

1-UK..well they invented the genre and saw it through the hellish 80s..
2-Germany-..with so much output from early on. with excellent bands in most prog sub genres , they deserve my no 2 spot..and then there is Eloy...
3-Sweden..caught the prog fever relatively later , but made up for it with brooding, atmospheric, dark, and totally engrossing music from excellent bands
4-USA-I started with Kansas, but then discovered many other fantastic  bands
5-Italy- with dozens of excellent symphonic bands..they know a thing or two about prog..

Though I've sniffed around the prog output from a  number of countries, I find that the main output that appeals to me seems to come from the UK, Scandinavia and the USA (in that order).

Prog from Italy of France usually really blows it for me with the foreign lyrics, and lyrics by any Geman Prog bands in English would be a success in any bloopers show.

I try to be objective.

1. U.K. - needs no comment

2. Germany - the 'cosmic school' is a really original alternative to British proto - and symphonic prog

3. Italy - so many good bands came from that country, giving their own twist to symphonic prog from the early seventies on

4. Sweden - important for more or less contemporary prog

5. Japan - not the most original prog country, but many good prog bands came from that country too

4. Zappa, er I mean US (don't care for the majority of what passes for prog in the US so this is a solely Zappa based rank)
5. Canada (Rush, Harmonium)

I can't believe so many people ahve the USA and Canada in their top 5?
Or that some even have more than 5 in their top 5......what is going on?

top 5   UK
        Germany
        Italy
        France
        Sweden

Real powerhouses of prog, not namby pamby metal rock or guff like that, but countries who have given real prog to the world. Long live Europa.

Not an easy question: UK and Sweden are both number one. UK wins by massive number of great bands, but Sweden draws level when taking into account that it's much smaller (in number of inhabitants), and has some of the best bands in the world.

My list:
1 UK and Sweden
3. Italy
4. USA
5. Poland
6. Germany

A tiny bit exaggerated but close to the truth. Oh, and you forgot to mention Karmakanic, Simon Says,  Galleon, Anglagard, Moon Safari, Beardfish, Therion, Mind's Eye, Evergrey, Anekdoten. Kaipa, A.C.T., Paatos, Andromeda, Landberk, Samla Mammas Manna, Par Lindh Project and many more.
It's more of a surprise not everybody puts them on no.1. I think it's obvious. Poland and France are ok too besides the evident UK and USA.

#1 UK

HUGE JUMP(mainly because I know few bands from the following countries, the jump isn't because of quality)

#2 U.S (Zappa and Metheny)
#3 Sweden (The Flower Kings)
#4 Argentina (almost everything by Spinetta and Crucis)
#5 Germany and Poland (Triumvirat and Ashra from GER and Skaldowie from POL)

Not including Canada for Rush, because I mainly categorise most Heavy Prog bands with Hard Rock/Heavy Rock, though not neglecting their prog credentials, just don't think the Prog that Heavy Prog bands is much in the style of the rest(not all of course)

1. UK (I think almost any prog fan would choose UK 1st because it is the country that in my opinion produced the best and more diverse prog bands)
2. Italy (obvious for me, but I dont agree with people that say the Italian Prog is of hte "second wave" of proggers, in that way they are "on par" with the UK for me)
3. Germany (Most of the electronic Prog comes from Germany, so....)
4. Sweden (Based on what I've heard of Samlas and other bands)
5. France (Because of Magma, one of the most creative bands I've heard ever)

Well England is certainly way ahead of everywhere else, but I don't know....Italy,of course, would have to be in the list as well.I noticed many people putting Japan in the list.
I'm just asking myself here, about all these marvelous japanese prog wonders.

I happen to find German prog mostly a rip off of the brittish bands,mostly.....well there is Kraftwerk, which is not, however, the purest definition of classic prog....a bit of an overlooked land for prog,if you ask me.
