Well, I've been exploring progressive metal for quite sometime now, and if there is one thing I've noticed it's that the bassists in these wonderful bands seldom get a mention. This is a shame really, because there are some really talented guys out there that contribute MASSIVELY to the music (behind all the very prominent guitar and drum work). So I decided to dedicate a thread to recognising prog metal bassists in all their glory.

The first one that pops to mind almost instantly is Steve DiGiorgio out of Death from Human to ITP. Astonishing player and brought the fretless into metal.

Oh, and it's also worth noting that i'll be handing out 10 ProgArchives pounds to anyone who doesn't mention John Myung

Sean Malone is probably my favorite, but admittedly my exposure is quite limited.

edit:  just noticed this was in "Top 10" - I doubt I could come up with half that many.  Embarrassed

Sean Malone (Cynic) Joe Lester (Intronaut) and Oliver Holzwarth (Sieges Even) are among my favorites. And of course Steve DiGiorgio. :P

I quite like Symphony X bassists, Thomas Miller and Michael Lepond, both are very skilled
and have warm sounding (that kind of sound Chris Squire established, I use to call it "the
wooden touch").Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree is another guy to put some attention on,
his contribution to the band itīs outstanding when they come to soundscapes he is always
keeping the overall structure and allowing Steve Wilson and Richard Barbieri to deliver that
pleasant passages.

Other Iīve become big fan is Dave Meros from Spockīs Beard, just for the "wooden touch" again
, he quite reminds me of the classic bassists sound (well, we all know what SB is about).

Please, send 10 PA pound as soon as possibleWink

Yesterday I was listening to Moonbabies after posting in this thread
and I reminded ībout all great bassists involved in any Sherinian work,
just canīt remember all of their names (Rufus Philpot is one of them I thinkUnhappy).

I dunno like so much TFK but find Jonas Reingold is another quite good bass player
with that particular old sound I love.

But he's been doing that sort with Niacin for a lot longer and far more albums. Then there is the guesting with Steve Vai:

Definitely one of my favorite bassists of all time, though I'd have a hard time calling a guy who is most well known for collaborating with Michael Hedges a prog metal bassist LOL.  That being said, plenty of his other work (Thonk, Attention Deficit) have their heavy as hell moments.

I have to give my appreciation to Joey Vera, perhaps best known as bassist of Armored Saint (not prog) and Fates Warning (prog).  I call him the Tony Levin of metal in that he always plays the right parts and rarely plays more that the right parts.  Big inspiration to my playing.

Everyone else was getting away with a fair few non-prog metal bassists, so I wanted to do the same Tongue

I hate to be petulant, but speaking as a bassist myself NOBODY needs nine strings on a bass. more than six is just silly, and people deride me for playing a five!

And I'm disappointed that nobody's mentioned Justin Chancellor, not the grooviest basssist by any stretch but he's very melodic, inventive and tasteful with his use of effects. He really fills out the comparatively sparse Tool 'sound', too. And his tone is immaculate.

And er, I also enjoy Dan Briggs (BTBAM) Jeff Caxide (Isis) and Colin Marston from Dysrhythmia (THE best bass tone I've ever heard, it could demolish buildings)

Well obviously he doesn't need nine strings. But anyway I agree with your selections. If you haven't heard already, you should hear Colin's Warr guitar work in his main band Behold... the Arctopus.

A lot of people are speaking the name "Sean Malone."  He's kicked back so far in the mix of Cynic's albums I barely notice.  Can someone name me a song on either Focus or Traced in Air where he is prominent?

I agree that the Cynic albums aren't the best showcase of Malone's talent.Try out his two Gordian Knot albums and his solo album Cortlandt to see how awesome a bassist Malone is.
