Oi, you reviewed Enslaved and Sigh and then failed to mention them!

Yeah, Black Metal is called that because the music is at least supposed to be dark. Progressive Black Metal bands know how to back that claim up with musicality too.

If you want dark, you can do no better than this band from my native Italy - Jacula:

http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=202551 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=202551

Jim's review is a true labour of love, and perfectly captures the essence of the album.

Anyway, very much unlike the stereotype most people have of Italy, Italian prog can be very dark indeed. Another good example is the one-shot band Pholas Dactylus, whose music was influenced by both KC and VDGG, and whose lyrics... Well, they have to be heard to be believed!

I thought of them, but I think their ../Review.asp?id=175306 - debut  is quite horrible . (and Antonius Rex, which I thought were the same band, but apparently not). So I left them out because the thread asked for dark bands not albums.

But Tardo Pede... is a progressive, dark masterpiece.

O yes. Il Balletto di Bronzo, Art Fleury, Cervello mm. Even Banco, Le Orme, Biglietto, Celeste... most have a natural, dark but mainly melancholic feel. Unlike the darkness of say Univers Zero and Shub Niggurath (and of course Black Metal, but it rarely succeeds imo) which is much more about being dark and creating a dark atmosphere.

Mono is pretty suicidal stuff.

Agalloch is cool combination of black metal darkness fused with post rock darkness, very depressing outcome. It's like Burzum collaborating with Mono. The Mantle is in my top ten.

Not really. It's just cold and mechanical. Some traces of anger maybe, but overall they're one of those bands that are too technical to allow for emotion. It's not the point anyway.

A few suggestions:

Van Der Graaf Generator are responsible for A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers, essentially a twenty minute exercise in anger, disillusion, fear, uncertainty, loneliness and suffering. More subtly, the disillusionment of My Room (Waiting For Wonderland) plays on the human condition's fear and, perhaps, futility. Dark moods are present on essentially all of their classic albums, even if they aren't always predominant.

Peter Hammill's solo career is no cheerier at times, with particular credit to the dark philosophy of Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night, the heartbreak of Over and the single most terrifying piece of music ever made, Gog.

Il Balletto Di Bronzo's Ys springs to mind, at times, early Genesis was very bleak and Atomic Rooster also spring to mind as a sort of depressive creature.

I'll have to repeat King Crimson and VDGG, two dark classic prog bands, which I enjoy time to time, but not faves because of their dark mood, lol.

Atomic Rooster as Rob said. But I must say just their debut and Death Walks Behind You.
Then Sabbath, in a very similar way as Rooster, for their lyrics and compositions.

Gentle Giant at times, with the dissonance and medieval style, feels like dark to me at times.

The Red Masque (very dark indeed).
Offering, especially the album "A Fieh", which sounds like a black mass.
Early Tangerine Dream appear pretty dark to me, especially the albums "Alpha Centauri", "Atem", "Phaedra" and "Rubycon".

Univers Zero offshoot; equally as dark, only much pointier and direct. Triskaidèkaphobie is the darkest of those two albums, with a prominent, almost threatening and obsessive "horror movie" vibe throughout. VERY dark stuff. Spanish band October Equus have released a couple of albums that shows a clear influence from Univers Zero/Present and have a similar dark sound, although I still feel their "mentors" beats them with a few feet!

I also have to mention Yog Sothoth, which is similar to Shub-Niggurath only with a stronger jazz approach. Very dark and brooding stuff. Shub-Niggurath guitarist Frank-William Fromy also released a VERY dark LP in 1988 entitled 'Quatre Axes Mutants' which is just as dark and creepy as S-N and beats much other stuff I've heard..

There is no right or wrong answer, I want to hear your opinon of what dark music is. You could say that the Beatles was the darkest band that you listened too and if you backed up with reasoning than thats totally alright.

How could I forget. Present are pretty much dark and gloomy throughout their whole discography.

Good call on gloomy avantjazzband Yog Sothoth too.

And I agree with the person who mentioned early Tangerine Dream, and I'll add early Klaus Schulze. Especially his three first. Icecold and dark.

The problem with non-Heresie Univers Zero and Presnt is that the atmosphere is interrupted by frantic, dissonant jamming, which can be upsetting I guess, but darkness for me comes from dwelling on dreary, bleak, terrifying soundscapes, like Lustmord, Robert Rich, some Sunn 0))), and other dark ambient artists.

I reckon the darkest prog song is Grave new world by strawbs. It's orcestral upbeat tones are turned sinister by the appocolyptic lyrics. the venom of 'may you rot' combinned with creative bass lines give a dark energy.
Also, if were including Led zepplin into Prog ( the obvious winnings of a punch up with the classic rock oldguard i seemed to have missed) i'm going to also venture Black Sabbath. As they spawned the goth scene i don't think you can get much Darker.

Soft Machine is pretty dark and eery sounding.  Take into account that I don't listen to them anything after Three and Four, when they started becoming a completely different band.  In the Court of the Crimson King is pretty dark.  Interstellar overdrive too...

Anglagard is my far the darkest retro band (although not  that retro either, but that calls for another topic). Jordök is a journey into the darkest forests of Scandinavia... chilling!

Agreed. The Tangent is quite far from dark although I do like them a lot.
As for the latest from Karmakanic, they have some darker moments. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone looking for a dark album. Maybe if they were looking for a dark symphonic prog sound I would recommend it although I am far from the best authority to speak for dark prog.

I hink a lot of the post-metal bands around nowadays are amongst the darkest. Isis, Rosetta and Neurosis are so dark and heavy atmospherically, it's almost impossible not to get crushed by their music. Unexpect are pretty dark. Some dark progressive death albums:

My Arms, Your Hearse - Opeth
Human - Death
Crimson - Edge of Sanity

My favourite all time non-metal album though is the astoundingly dark Pawn Hearts.

Deathspell Omega!!!!!!

Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum
(Latin for Divine law - Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire) is the second album among the conceptual trilogy by French black metallers Deathspell Omega. Though the albums within the trinity are linked by concept, they are all musically unique. The trilogy proclaims the relationships of God, Hell, and man. Fas' concept is focused around man. The album was released by the French underground black metal label Norma Evangelium Diaboli in Europe on July 16th, and in the US by Ajna Offensive (and distributed by Southern Lord) on the 17th. It was originally released both as a CD Digipak and on vinyl LP. The vinyl version also contains a poster of the cover and a 12 inch booklet. Despite it's large size, the booklet is identical to the Digipak version.

One who enters the domain of this 45 minute LP will certainly be left drawn and exhausted by the end. This album is harsh, brutal, and inexplicably magical. Through the use of technical insanity and subtle atmospheric details, Deathspell Omega created an experience unlike one in existence before.

Although the basis of this album is black metal, do not confuse it with raw black metal via Darkthrone or Mayhem and do not be misguided by the bands primitive early recordings. They have long since progressed above the cheesy generic black metal of their early career. Since then they have utilized a much cleaner produced aesthetic and instead of pumping gnarly dissonance, they have acquired a method of utmost technicality.

Through this blazing disarray of impossible-to-play drum lines and nimble guitars are groovy post-esque segments that allow the listener a bit of time to rest. A physical rest perhaps, though these segments certainly do not lighten the atmosphere. Imagine an Isis cover band that had died and is playing in an eternal prison within hell. And I'm not alluding that these parts were ripped off of Isis, they are certainly unique.

The amount of details hidden within this album is incredible. I have listened to the album maybe 40 or 50 times now and upon each spin I unearth new layers of which I was previously unaware. For example, it was only the last time I listened to the album that I realized the prominent use of piano. Even in the heavy chaotic moments there is that far off layer of creepily out of tune piano that just adds to the atmosphere. Further more there are terrified screams, choral arrangements, and samples of classical music (played on cello I believe) within the mix. In my opinion it is the ability to dig and analyze and be surprised by music even after dozens of repeated listens that certifies an album as purely progressive.

In conclusion, this is in my opinion the most accomplished piece of black metal to be yet released. It is my second favorite album of all time and it is one that I believe I will enjoy for years to come. I highly recommend it for fans of tech/extreme or avant-garde prog (though perhaps post-metalers will enjoy it as well). If you do not listen to this album you are doing a disservice to the entire history of metal...

Hmm...dark...

I'll have to, along with everyone else, reaffirm the status of Crimso and V der G as the darkest of the classic prog set.

Some additions: High Tide has a fairly bleak outlook on life. You know, what with the song titles like "Futilist's Lament" and "Death Warmed Up." Their buddies The Doors ain't exactly the happiest band on earth either--wasn't the term "goth rock" coined for them?

From the modern set...I'm surprised no one's mentioned Radiohead. They've taken the Pink Floyd "we're all terribly depressed and going to die" line and taken it to a new level. No one's done paranoid and depressing in such a personal way for me, not since Morrison and friends.

*Disclaimer: none of Tull's album's are hideously dark, but they're always very cynical, and a few (Heavy Horses, Benefit, Minstrel) can be kinda depressing and hopeless. Just sayin'.

Pawn Hearts may be dark, but there is a sense of joy I feel in listening to it, as if you could tell the musicians were having a ball making it. Indeed, the band was often falling over with laughter during playback; not laughing at the music, but rather just hearing how f*'d up it sounded: "What the f* are people going to make of this?"

I never find VdGG depressing. Even the supposedly dark stuff can be uplifting. Plus, they rock (especially from Godbluff on).

Really?  TDM always sounded very somber and melancholic to me, and it does have a very potent emotional effect on the listener - it always leaves me feeling emotionally drained - but it always just seemed too cathartic, too emotional to ever be genuinely depressing.  Still my favorite album, though.

By the way, I know Peter Hammill isn't technically a band, but the stuff he did on The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage out-darknesses anything he ever did with VdGG, in my opinion.

WOW, this is something like a 'name all of Antenna's favourite bands'-thread! Thumbs Up
I'll definitely check out the bands named here that I don't yet know about, I get the feeling it might well be worthwhile.

But eh... how come nobody has yet mentioned Anathema? Their (fantastic!) Alternative 4 album surely deserves a mentioning.

"I dance with angels, to celebrate the holocaust..."  if THAT isn't dark, then nothing is!

Oh yes, I totally agree! Anathema came first on my mind. Then Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Arachnoid, Henry Cow, Maudlin Of The Well, Kayo Dot etc, etc...
