What is your favorite band (prog or non-prog) ? Not the band that made your favorite albums or musics, not the band who's music you like the most, just the band you like more.

Can't say I understand what you are asking.

Do you want us to tell which band we like because of how friendly they are when they come over to visit?
  Confused

I dont understand either..

My favourite band, for the record is Genesis, but that IS because I like their music more than anyone elses. Not sure what other criteria there is, to be honest..

There are bands which I enjoy their music but I dont like the band because the members are arrogant (perhaps this is the criteria for me). And yes how friendly they are is also a criteria.

Can't say I've met too many of them.

After a show, the lead singer for The Marshall Tucker band tried to get me drunk when I was 17 (seriously).

I'd love to meet Kansas (When I lived in GA I had the chance to do so when they recorded Device Voice Drum in Atlanta, but I couldn't afford to go).  I think having a beer with Rich Williams and Robby Steinhardt would be cool, and of course I'd love to meet Kerry Livgren.

I'm not, generally, really that interested in musicians' personalities, nor do I go to many concerts so I'm not that interested in how they interact with audiences, I'm interested in the music itself.  My favourite bands probably would be Magma and Art Zoyd, and I'm very big of Robert Wyatt, Henry Cow, Miles Davis, Heldon,  and Art Bears.  There are many others that rank very highly in terms of music, but those have been so important to me.  I guess I feel that I "know" Robert Wyatt best, so in a personality poll, I would feel compelled to vote for him -- musically he is one of my favourite artists too.

Outside of music in the archives, I like John Coltrane and Stockhausen muchly (as well as much classical), but it's for the music.

So I guess Robert Wyatt, though not a band, would fit best. I would love to have met the various guys from Soft Machine.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

If you count personality as the biggest part of the equation (it's not for me), then I would go with...Rush. They seem to be very nice guys, and if you don't act like an idiot around them they can be very fun to talk to (from what I've seen in numerous interviews). After Rush, I would go with Tony Banks from Genesis. I have millions of questions to ask Tony Banks. I don't think he's a very social or energetic man, but then again, I'm not usually social or energetic, either. Still, regardless of personality, I would love to meet Tony Banks.

My five favorite bands overall are:

1. Genesis
2. Rush
3. Iron Maiden
4. Led Zeppelin
5. Pantera

Would you like some Bailey's?

I dont really care much about the bands personalities either, unless they are utter facists, I suppose, but there doesn't appear to be many of them in rock music generally..

Frank Dunnery of It Bites shared half a pint of lager with me once, and Wayne Hussey of The Mission kissed me on the cheek, for some reason, but hey....

Using these criteria it's IQ for me.  They always mingle with the fans before and after gigs and are genuine nice guys Cool.

I've spoken with all the band at one time or another, but I particularly remember a nice chat I had with Martin Orford years ago, probably mid-80s.  I was delighted to hear he's a big fan of Eddie Jobson, as I am Approve.

I don't know any musicians personally, so I guess I can't answer.

Or maybe my answer is that CoAM and Epignosis are my favorite bands.  Tongue

I don't really understand the question, either, but my favourite band are Marillion, with Yes & Genesis coming in a gnat's hair breadth after.

As for non prog, I've always loved The Levellers, who most definitely are very friendly and willing to spend the time of day with you. I was influenced by the music and the politics with them. They are followed by The Tansads, who (sadly), very few have even heard of, but hailed from Wigan, England, and made some great LPs in the vein of The Levellers during the 90's. They also shared a pint with you as wellWink

Anyone who, like me, enjoys some of the folkier prog, would be very well advised to go out and buy stuff from both bands, although you might struggle to find any Tansads now. They are certainly not prog either of them, but they have strong celtic, folk, and punk influences together with a very good feel for melodic and soulful ballads.

Oh, I forgot - Bryan Josh of Mostly Autumn is also exceptionally warm and approachable. I shared a pint and a long conversation with him prior to a great gig in Cardiff a couple of years ago.

Well, Tool is my favorite band in terms of their music, but I hear that they are donkey-holes in person, so I guess that means that Pink Floyd comes next-- oh, wait . . . there is Roger Waters . . . .

Hmm . . . The Yes guys seem to be quite friendly, so I guess they are the next pick.

. . . although there IS that story where Peter Banks says that Steve Howe wouldn't let him guest perform during the 'Union' tour . . .

. .  Honestly, not to state the obvious here, but EVERY band has a member or two who becomes arse-hole-ish at one point or another. They are human, after all.

I find very funny the story of when Howe bought 2 tickets of airplane, one for him and one for mr G.Ibson.

I see what you mean. Well, I could see myself having a chat with bandmembers before or after a gig with Pendragon, The Flower Kings or Glass Hammer. They seem very sympathetic to me and they also happen to play excellent music by the way so it would be a party all the way then.
But I couldn't see myself doing the same thing with Dream Theater or Pink Floyd to name a few. Even though I like their music. I'm not saying they are *ss h*les or something, just  less approchable.

Marillion is my favorite; however, I'd love to sit down and have a beer with the boys of Pendragon. Nick looks like one of the most non-pretentious people out there. Peter Gee and Scott Higham are both men of faith, which I find refreshing in music (especially prog).

Out of my favourite bands I think I'd most enjoy a chat with Alex or Geddy from Rush. Maybe Neil too, but he would probably be so uncomfortable in the situation that I'd feel sorry for disturbing him. Or if I win a meet & greet pass for a Metallica gig next summer I'll probably hook Rob Trujillo up in a Rush conversation, he's a big fan I hear and a very laid back down to earth person.

When I go to smaller gigs I like to compliment the band afterwards and so after seeing Overhead about seven to ten times these past couple of years I've gotten to know them as people quite well, Jaakko and Tarmo mostly. Very nice guys to talk to and have a beer with.

I've met very few members of bands, but I'm lucky enough to have met Lemmy of Motorhead (and kissed him on the cheek), who was friendly, unassuming and witty.  I also briefly met Justin Sullivan from New Model Army, who actually came across as rather shy.  I like IQ and Jethro Tull live because they are funny and keep cracking jokes throughout their sets. LOL

Somebody I can't stand in music is Axl Rose, what an arrogant knobhead. Angry

I always like to hang out with John Wesley right before a PTree show. He always heads towards the nearest resturant to the venue to chill with fans. If you know him, he is great around fans, and isnt an jackass.

Like Chuck Schuldiner said, "Support music, not rumours". And it's probably true that the music is more important than what the band members personalities are like but hmm... Musically, I'd go with Dream Theater, but actually they seem like very cool guys too (I haven't met them but based on interviews and stuff), so I'd still say Dream Theater. They we're the band that got me into music and still are my favourite.Smile I also love Judas Priest, Opeth, Death, etc. When it comes to personalities btw, I would have assumed (based on Opeth's music) that Åkerfeldt is a very quiet and calm you know, but in all the interviews I've seen and at their show here in Finland he's always telling jokes and seems like a really fun guy. Smile

Just found out that John Wesley will be opening for Marillion for the Sunday night show in Montreal at the convention. Actually, from what I've seen, the opening acts don't look too shabby. Still, I'm goin' to see my boys.

Judged purely by my favourite music the Beatles would be behind several prog rock bands.

However, the Beatles are clearly my favourite band.  Not only was their music brilliant and ground breaking but they meant far more than that to a child growing up in the 60s.  They were icons as well as musicians and their legend has continued to grow in the decads since.

If it's based on friendliness and how cool the members are...then it's most certainly going to be a 60's band.  I can't imagine anything cooler than chilling with the Grateful Dead.  Or Jefferson Airplane, Arthur Brown, or NOT Jim Morrison, as much as I may love the guy.
