I've recently found a French band called Nemo and I think all their albums are above the average quality. What bands do you know not to make weak albums? I consider Pink Floyd like that, too!

Meshuggah
Isis
Pelican
The Mars Volta
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Death
Agalloch
The Fall Of Troy
Gojira
Russian Circles
SikTh
The Red Chord
Cynic
Cult of Luna
Mogwai
The Postman Syndrome (only released one album though, lol)
Kayo Dot
maudlin of the Well
Protest The Hero
(Under prog related) Coheed and Cambria

I know, not a long list, but I'm very distracted and honestly cannot think of anymore off the top of my head.

King Crimson perhaps, possibly Floyd too. Of all their material I've heard, I've not heard anything I would rate below 3 stars. If thats any measure....

I congratulate you on your discovery of Nemo.  I haven't heard everything from them, but if their latest album is as good as the rest, I need to explore their back catalogue.

As I look through my massive prog collection and consider bands that have released more than one disc and which I have heard all of their discography, only two bands come to mind.

U.K.
Seven Reizh

Only two releases from each of them, but they are both of a very high quality.  Grab them when you can.

Oh and I used a much more stringent standard than the person above me.  Nothing below four stars (and verging on five.)

Thank you for the detailed answer. I think your standard for average is quite high.Wink - "Nothing below four stars (and verging on five.)". I have to listen to U.K. and Seven Reizh. It's strange, but I've never listened to UK. As for Nemo, I think every next album is better than the previous, but probably all of them will please you, when you like the last. The genre is the same, the music is similar, so try...

I can think of plenty, but I suppose it would be cheating to name bands that only released a handful of albums.

That said, micky is right in that for a band with many releases, Gentle Giant has unbelievable consistency of quality.

Giant for a Day - 2.33. I rest my case.

It is indeed true that many classic Prog bands did have all of their classic albums over average, Genesis would be another clear contester for that claim, with all albums from Trespass to Wuthering being above average, but the longer a band plays, the easier it becomes for them to be lost in fame, and bring out some crappy CD a la We Can't Dance or Love Beach, or Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll, or so many more for that matter.

There's quite a few bands that still would stay at least above average, like Opeth did until 08, with Änglagard and Anekdoten coming to mind easily, or Sigh, whose third album is my avatar for that matter

I agree, Gentle Giant doesn't quite qualify.  They were brilliant for the majority of their run but those last 3 albums weren't very good.

1 album wonders excluded:
- The Doors - while I still have trouble with them as a Prog Archives artist their discography with Jim Morrison (I think it is a valid argument to say that a band should not continue under the same name after losing its signature member) is without blemish
- Anglagard
- Egg
- Hatfield And The North
- Kingston Wall
- Quella Vecchia Locanda
- Sweet Smoke (I think Darkness To Light is just fine)
- Trace
- UK

A couple notable near misses:
- Pink Floyd (blasted Final Cut)
- Ian Anderson solo (Walk Into Light)
- David Gilmour (About Face)

weren't very good... add in their live album.. that makes 9 straight 4 star rated album in a row ..from the gate... no group here can match that.  Plus... Giant for a Day.... you all call it bad... well... not everyone does.  Just because it is prog, doesn't make it good, just because it isn't.. doesn't make it bad.

Wow! You really can teach an old dog new tricks! The band took some time off after the mediocrity of Piece, and during that time apparently decided to make a serious effort at creating a good pop/rock'n'roll album. I'm guessing that the band honestly believed that, with a strong effort, they could reach a mass audience while at the same time not totally alienating all of their fans. Of course, they were totally wrong on both counts, but that's the fault of circumstance, not of the album, because the album is really quite good. All traces of prog have been wiped away (as opposed to on Piece, where the second half had some weird chord sequences and of course an epic), but when the replacement is solid pop-rock, I can hardly complain.

One big difference between this and the last album is that the long stretches of tastelessness that abounded on Piece are mostly eradicated here - some of the songs entertain me less than others, sure, but only one of them (the power ballad It's Only Goodbye) makes me wretch in disgust. Otherwise, the album's largely a fascinating exercise in style, one that shows the band occasionally using its experiences in other genres to influence the ideas shown here, without directly cribbing from their previous albums. For instance, we have the opening Words from the Wise, which starts off by showcasing the band's great vocal harmonies, but in a straightup poppy manner instead of the modern classical stylings of On Reflection. Even haters of this period of the band tend to like this song (probably because of those same vocal harmonies), even though its gloriously catchy (yet involved) verse melody and chorus bleed poppy goodness at all points.

Or, if you're a fan of the band's long stretches of no vocals, there's a hilarious instrumental called Spooky Boogie, which uses occasional quiet dissonant keyboard chords to provide a "scary" effect as an augmentation to the nice, jazzy melody. And if you're a fan of the band's ability to combine styles that should have nothing to do with each other, then the title track is for you. Vaguely punkish, with a simple nagging guitar/keyboard pattern driving it forward, as well as booming drumming, it shows a band willing to make a total fool of itself and come up with something extremely entertaining in the process.

The other songs are basically "conventional," but they're at worst nice and at best great, so I'm definitely in no position to complain. Thank You is an EXCELLENT acoustic pop ballad, with totally non-trivial chord sequences, a nice vocal performance from Derek (one thing I should note - I like Derek's voice more on this album than I did on the "classic" GG albums. Fancy that.), moving lyrics, and of course those little subtle guitar augmentations in the background. Little Brown Bag is a terrific, punchy rocker, with Derek bellowing in a convincing manner, Kerry sounding like he spent hours listening to Gary Brooker's playing on Exotic Birds and Fruit (another example of an art-rock band turning to a 'simpler' sound to great effect) and Gary's guitars sounding like Keith Richards pounding out those crisp lines.

I'm also quite partial to Friends, which is a solid two-minute acoustic ballad, with John Weathers (drums) on vocals, and all sorts of nice acoustic flourishes underneath the good vocal melody. And of course, there's the brilliant closer Rock Climber, which took me a couple of listens to like (don't know why), but that I'll likely enjoy for the rest of my life. Man, who would've thought that the prog band that would be able to do real rock'n'roll the best would be Gentle Giant, the band for people who thought rock'n'roll was retched'n'retarded...

The other two songs (Take Me, which has a nice chorus but that took me a zillion listens to remember how the song goes, and the nice-but-head-drooping No Stranger) aren't as good, but definitely not bad either. Add up these ten songs, and you have an extremely solid album that, through no fault of its own, completely fell between the cracks of history. Hardcore GG fans will probably hang me in effigy for liking this more than Glass House or Glory, but I really wish they'd reconsider and accept the possibility that there can, in fact, be such a thing as a very good pop album. Like, say, this one.

I haven't heard all The Flower Kings albums, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm sure there are none under-average.

The Tangent and Transatlantic are totally brilliant, and don't feature any under-average album. Deep Purple from Proto-Prog barely does....

I think a fairer questions is how many above average albums in a row. As many have noted, I don't know if it's fair to compare Anglagard who put out two and a live album (none below average) to Genesis who has both a Seven Disc run of brilliance flanked by weaker material or Gentle Giant who put out 9 great albums before succumbing to the sack of prog by punk.

Opeth has a great run going of which Watershed is at the top and spans at least 9 years. Don't let anyone fool ya.

Well, there's always going to be a weak album or two within a band's catelogue, if they have any catelogue to speak of. If you're considering bands that have only release a couple of albums, then fissed out, that isn't a fair comparison up against a band that lasted for decades.

Yes Nemo is a great band full of talented musicians, I've reviewed two albums by them and I was impressed by how easy they manage to handle the instruments. Are many more for sure, Jethro Tull, everything between Stand up to Broad sword are good, at least for me, Renaissance all from the '70's albums are strong, and many more, Iron Maiden all of the '80's albums are unmatched , etc

Sorry, just saw a few in there that I really like but consider really uneven. I'm that silly fool who gave TPE five stars and Remedy Lane two. Tool is another one, I really like them, but I honestly don't think I've listen to any of their early albums through in their entirety (including Aenima). Great songs on them, but.....

And I felt ashamed not to have remembered Mr. Bungle as a fanboy, 3 awesome albums, significantly different sound. All 4+ stars.

Sorry I didn't mean to target you, just bands that I feel strongly about.

^Yes, Tool are my favorite band, but their early work was anything but above-average. Pretty generic stuff, if you ask me. They only began to blossom with AEnima, so in my view, they aren't a band that has been all that consistant throughout their career.

Rush
Henry Cow
Frank Zappa (none are under average, there are just some that I don't like as much)
The Mars Volta
Ozric Tentacles
King Crimson
Echolyn
Gryphon
Univers Zero (probably)

Close, but no cigar:
Porcupine Tree   (except the debut)

There may be some others I'm not thinking of.

Devin Townsend has, in my opinion, not made a single weak solo album.

Porcupine Tree would also fit, if not for In Absentia and Deadwing ruining their track record.

Magma is also a band with one of the most consistant streak of incredible albums... and they're STILL puting out music.
