--The one band you would choose to listen to, while being stuck on an island indefinitely (with good headphones and infinite batteries...)
Reasons too.
For me: Tangerine dream
--huge discography --wide array of moods --many albums that would fit the island setting well

Beer and good pizza is more important than choosing one band IMO.

would have to be Led Zep for me
--huge discography - not the biggest but could include all the Plant and Page albums?
--wide array of moods - slow sad Blues, lively hard Rock, earthy mystical Folk.
--many albums that would fit the island setting well - and to hear them as loud as i like!
seriously folks, i have been listening to these albums for 40 years and still find new details i missed, and get such a buzz from them - i guess i will never finish listening to them.

If stuck on an island, I would probably choose to listen to the complete works of Joseph Haydn. Check it out: the man wrote more than a hundred symphonies (more than half of which are superb), many dozens of sublime string quartets, some beautiful sonatas and concertos, a couple of gorgeous oratorios - and his operas aren't bad either. They'd keep you busy for months!
Although I probably love Mozart just as much, Mozart's music is just a tad too emotionally intense and too city-like. It would soon make me miss the bright lights, and the streets full of people. Haydn is earthier; perfectly suited to island life.
It goes without saying that no contemporary rock act even comes CLOSE. Sure, I could spend happy island mornings with the Soft Machine, Jethro Tull or Zappa, but after a couple of days such acts would inevitably start to pall.

Probably Van der Graaf Generator, though I'd really miss King Crimson and Hammill's solo albums. More important, though, I would like to have a guitar or would at least built something similar to that.
Reasons? All moods I am interested in, good musicianship, enough weirdness, discography long enough to not get bored. And the only band I'd really miss would be Tull, but I guess I could play similar on an acoustic guitar.

Grateful Dead Discography. Seing as they've had hundreds of concerts released, not to mention that I would never get bored of it in the least bit. Caravan was almost my choice, as it's another band I could listen to endlessly and not get bored of.
Theres bands I probably like more than both, but I wouldn't get bored of either.

Jethro Tull...and then the obligatory Jimmy Buffett
1. Ian Anderson (can never get enough of his acoustic strummings)
2. Martin Barre (versatility 101)
3. Stand Up (I can listen to this album all day)
Well, Tull has one of the deepest catalouges when looking at other contemporaries; I could feast on Stand Up through Thick As a Brick. If there is one complaint is Ian was at times overproductive and the material was lacking on a few albums. But there are so many moments that are truly remarkable. Stand Up is a prime example styles with everything from eastern, jazz, classical, blues to folk influences.

As I can't get enough of Jethro Tull, and it's been that way for years (decades, actually) without letting up, I'd have to go with them.

Beethoven, but since he doesn't count as a band, really, maybe Ornette Coleman or Miles Davis. John Zorn would also be a possibility because of his crushing and varied discography.
Zappa was aggressively experimental, but the end result somehow usually sounds pretty similar to me. There's a xylophone playing low notes, the guitar has that tone and does a flashy yet understated solo, there's a couple brass sections, crude lyrics...

No offense intended towards you, but that is not something I can understand. And not just because I am bored by Zeppelin before the song is even over, I don't comprehend listening to anything for 40 years. I can't listen to the music I liked even a year ago. So who are these people who will pay $150 to see the Rolling Stones play Satisfaction?

This is the most interesting variation of "who's your favourite band?" I've ever seen
Having thought about it a lot (and I take it I can't smuggle my 8gb MP3 player with lots of stuff? ), I'll plump for Marillion (both versions), especially as I could not bear the thought of never hearing Neverland in my life aghain. It's just about the most perfect prog song ever written and performed.
Blimey, though....the thought of no Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Van De Graaf........................................................

It'd better be Rush.
As for me..... TD is the easy choice. By which, I of course mean Team Dreater. (Robert had better read this.)

Maybe I'm too conventional but I would be hard hard pushed not to go with the Genesis discography......of course I would have to find a use for the post '76 releases and I am sure that they would be more use as signal mirrors to attract attention for passing ships.

This is too difficult...
Maybe Miles Davis just because of the ridiculously large size of his discography, with plenty of gems hidden in there.
Maybe Beethoven just because I love everything I've heard from him and I need to hear more classical music anyway.
Maybe Sonic Youth because they also have a large and fascinating discography with tons of gems. Plus I find it easier to listen to lots of rock music without moving to other genres than I do for jazz/classical.
I really don't know.

I can't choose so I'm GOING to smuggle my mp3 player, complete with a solar USB charger AND I'm going to steal Martinprog's lady too.
If all that failed it'd have to be Floyd for me 'cos:
Discography
Light and shade to match moods
I could surely include Gilmour's solo albums
But I bet listening to just one band for more than a day or so would drive all of us on PA so nuts we wouldn't know where we were by the end of the week. However, Martinprog's lady might help to keep me sane...

Yep. The ship I'm wrecked from is carrying a huge consignment of Budweiser and Rioja and space debris has provided me with a huge working refrigerator.
Plus the ship's disco includes the entire outputs of KC, Sabbath, VddG and Genesis up to 1976. And the radio works but the dial's broken and stuck to Planet Rock.
