There was a thread a while ago about little things to brighten up your day. This is the thread to post things that remind us of the crushing realities that we choose to ignore in order to maintain our carefree, extravagent lives.
I will begin with a photo essay on child labor. I wish they would adjust for the local cost of living to put those salaries in perspective, but even still, http://www.zoriah.net/blog/2009/04/guest-photographerphotojournalist-gmb-akash-child-labor.html - :(
Less viscerally, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil - perhaps our carefree, extravagent lifestyles are coming to an end.
If we're going to spiral down into depression, we might as well do it together.

Overpopulation. If we capped out at about 3 billion, manage to develop some kind of sustainable footprint and economic system that did not depend on endless, infinite and impossible continued growth, eliminate violence, cease pollution/consumption in time to stop species loss, the death of our oceans/fish, habitat loss, 7 legged frogs, and quell religious fanaticism, we might have a chance. As we're going, we screwed. Good luck world, you're gonna need it.

Lol, you are the first person I've met who think we need to cut the population in half.
By the way, this doesn't have to just be about the Third World and whatnot. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/02/23/pennsylvania.corrupt.judges/index.html - This isn't a very good example, but it's the best I can think of at the moment. I find no problem with that really. Don't like it? Stop eating food. On the other hand, one could just take the silver spoon out of his mouth and be glad for those bugs, compared to what humanity had to deal with for 99.999% of its existence.

Didn't peak oil already happen in 2005 or so? That would certainly explain why gas prices have been going through the roof the last many years.

I`m sick of those goddam yellow bellied Taliban b*****ds killing Canadian soldiers with IEDs. A 21 year-old female soldier was killed on the weekend. Come and fight us face-to-face and it`s a different kettle of fish. It`s unfortunate that we don`t hear more about the successes of the mission there. That`s what`s making me miserable these days.

Personally, I don't enjoy an extravagant lifestyle (I don't even have a driving license), and my life is not particularly carefree, though of course it is not miserable either. On the other hand, I don't really have any desire to spiral down into depression... If I did, my own life would definitely get worse, and no one of the world's problems would improve a bit.

You live in a house and have air conditioning, a bed, a refrigerator, a computer, and you are able to spend a significant amount of time/money on music and internet forums. I'd imagine the three billion people living on less than $2.50 a day would call that extravagent.

Well I don`t even know why I have a driver`s licence or even own a stupid car for that matter. I take my BMW out every day ( That is Bike, Metro, Walk ). There are so many maniacs out there with drivers`licences that they must have got in a box of Cracker Jack. They think it`s their right to be lunatics. In Montréal instead of slowing down for a yellow caution the idiots speed up to try and beat the red which results inso many broadsides. I saw an SUV run a red a couple of weeks ago and ram into a city bus. Fortunately no one was hurt but the rear end of the SUV was pretty twisted up. Definitely a write-off and an increase in the guy`s insurance premium. Idiot Montréal drivers make me miserable every day.

How about this!
We all die. Nothing we accomplish will last forever. All things fade away eventually, nothing is forever, no one will be remembered forever. All victories are shallow and fleeting. There is nothing that is guaranteed, and karma is a lie.
Now, how about the mass murder of the Jewish race in the holocaust. People being beaten and starved, burned and shot, raped and forced to slave labor. Or how about patriotism? Patriotism always depresses me. A gathering of individuals who are proud of the fact that they were born in their country without a choice, and had almost no real part in it. And these people sometimes even wage war. Last I heard, we lived together on one planet, and that planet is round, right?

I share that view too. Didn't JFK once point out, in one addess to the nation, that the one thing we all have in common, is that we share this tiny planet, and that should be the basis of strong relationships between nations..words to that effect. In reality, of course, there's no room for such wishy washy philosophy in global politics.
Mankinds inability to embrace the bigger picture will be our downfall. It's well and truly started. The west is particularly to blame for the decline of humanity, as we are obsessed with the idea of 'freedom' and what we believe to be our 'rights'
It's our 'right' to use as much oil as we like. It's our right to have 10 children if we want. We hate pragmatism, and doing whats best. We just like to indulge in what makes us feel right at the time.
Ultimately we'll end up with the world we deserve. Even then we'll be looking for someone else to blame..!

As a footnote to what Andy said, we should remember that our freedom and rights end where those of other people begin... This is called mutual respect, and should be the basis of every human interaction.
As regards the issue of patriotism, I am not the best person to comment on that, seen my current situation.... I can tell you, at my age is not easy to live in a sort of limbo, and realise you are a second-class human being just because you were born elsewhere.

I goddamn hate patriotism. Living in Australia, that means a bunch of red neck retards known as "bogans" waving the Australian flag all over the place and talking about 'true austrayianism' (because retard red necks cannot speak properly). They have seemingly invented all sorts of idiotic colloquialisms that make me embarrassed to live in this country quite frankly, as well as always getting wasted on Australia day and ruining it for other people. I mean, this country is not bad and all, but geezus, it's not any better than the UK, Canada or the US it's just any other bog standard industrialized country. Well actually I'd rather live in the US purely because the price of some of the stuff I need as a musician is stupidly expensive. In this sh*thole where I live, everything is seemingly 50 per cent more expensive for guitars, amps and all that. I cannot stress enough how much I hate "bogans". Even worse being some of my extended family are bogans, arghhhhh. They are slobbering idiots and they have this annoying, piercing, whine to their accent to top it off.

Patriotism isn't taking pride in where you were born; it is taking pride in the country you live in. You cannot control your ethnicity or country of birth, but you can control where you live.
If people have the right to admonish a country when it does wrong, why can they not take pride in it when it does right.

I don't know about Reasons to be miserable, but this thread should be Reasons to be cheerful; everyone posting here is doing so using a piece of high tech equipment, from a country where free expression is allowed. The very access to or ownership of such equipment makes it self evident nobody posting here is doing so from a position of poverty.
By all means we should highlight injustice (be it legal, moral or economic) wherever it appears, but at the same time, celebrate the fact we have the right to do so freely and without let or hinderance.
I can sympathise with Raff's frustration at being in a form of limbo - after all this time trying to get to be with the man she loves, then finally getting there, only to be tied up in red tape must be infuriating in the extreme, but if you want an example of being treated like a second class human being, try to envisage being on the wrong side of the Hutu/Tutsi divide in Rwanda.

Correct James FinnForest. In fact, HP is also enjoying the same extravagant lifestyle... I don't understand why can't he sell the computer and go live with the starved masses in Africa.... instead of calling out the other people who live their normal lives.... Doing something is so much more difficult than pointing out things...
I also enjoy that "extravagent" lifestyle of AC, intetrnet forums and music, but I'm not the one whining about how f**ked up the world is. So the ones that really suffer because of this, they should take action immediately. (even though I agree it is f**ked up).

Ironically enough, it depressed me, to a degree, that I (and people in general) seem to always focus on whats wrong in our lives to determine how I (we) am (are), while (almost) completely ignoring the good. As many of pointed out, all of us here are extremely fortunate compared to the third world (and chickens for that matter). While I am thankful for that, I can't help but be depressed over non-material things that I don't have/can't seem to attain. Perhaps this can be chalked up to another victory for greed...or ego, or something equally as troubling.
I also share Finnforest worry of overpopulation. This will become even more of a serious problem in the (probably near) future being the population of earth is growing fast and shows abosolutely no signs of stopping...that is if we don't destroy all humans with nuclear war or climate change first.

Did I just say "our problems are so banal"? They are - apart from those dealing with children Really, if there was some effective manner of child protection, the world would be almost perfect.

What better way to protect children than to never have them?

Nothing.
I try not to be miserable - it doesn't accomplish anything.

Agreed Pat. Though being "rosy glass" cheerful doesn't necessarily accomplish either. Somehow, we need to find a way to have a functional society without depending on infinite "growth", which is not sustainable on a finite planet.
Step one is to stabilize the number of people via family planning, contraception, education. From there we need to think about the economics and changing how we value resources. I don't think we have the ability to pull it off as a world, which makes me a pessimist. Hopefully we can change one country at a time and the many will follow the lead of the few.

It's not about forcing laws on people like China. It's about educating people and making them at least think about being responsible, conscious of it. Right now many people don't think about it. Pop culture worships the Duggars and their 18 children....as if that's a good thing. But everyone gets to decide for themselves in the end. I don't advocate any governement limits, I just think people should be voluntarily responsible, whatever that means to them personally.

Correct James FinnForest. In fact, HP is also enjoying the same extravagant lifestyle |
I am indeed, possibly even moreso than Raff. I make up for it by just being really unhappy, which is what this thread is all about.

Why not? There's plenty of threads that celebrate the positive, so why not have the balance? I also believe that while we all want to be surrounded by happiness, our true fascination lies in things that get us down. Maybe some folk seek solutions to those issues, through discussion, or maybe sounding off about them is a form of therapy.
Embrace the misery!

Type O Negative's aptly-titled World Coming Down takes the cake if we're picking from albums that are meant to be depressing. Everything dies, after all.

Aye. Lou Reed's Berlin does a fine job. As does The Final Cut, Songs of Love and Hate. I am quite the fan of Cohen. AIC's Dirt & Jar of Flies are good for a depressive fix...

you know what i hate? those fund raising things... for any reason....
it is hypocritical by all sides involved...
people who raise it, well those might mean it actually, but after them, the money collected go through numerous hands, God knows, how much of that amount reaches whoever is supposed to reach...
us, pretending to care only once or twice a year, giving much less we can afford, selfishly 'doing' our part of this theatre of so-called "Humanity Hour", right before we turn our backs again to the third world, the victims of wars etc, and continue to consume unnecessary goods....
the governments and every other kind of state who are supposed to take care of the poor, prevent war, fund research for all diseases etc and after the fund raising go on tv and praise the magnitude of the human race, a race that did all this....
i refuse to give one penny through this. just to be clear, i'm not a misanthrope, i choose the root of my charity, that's all... i hate it when they tell me: "You have the power to make this war a better place". You know why? Because i do have that power and i know i do. But YOU don't get to tell me that because YOU are the cause of all this and i have the power to not vote YOU, to strike against YOU, to fight YOU... don't ask me for my money... i'm already being underpaid because of YOU!!!!!!!!
