Apparently Roadrunner Records decided to release a track already and you can download it free on their website, but it says it will only be available for 24 hours so download it now if you want to listen to it. This is the second track from the new Dream Theater album.

Listened to it today ... it's quite what I expected. It strongly reminded me of Systematic Chaos. It's definitely not a return to their former strength ... I'll be buying the album nevertheless, and I'll undoubtedly enjoy listening to it. How many fans of Yes or Genesis are enjoying these artists' 10th studio albums?

I was hoping for something a bit better, but then again this is just the 'single' so maybe the rest of the album will still be really good.

btw i heard A Nightmare to Remember, and is waaaayyyyyyy better of a song than A Rite of Passage. Havent heard any other tracks, i think AROP is the equivalent of Forsaken from SC, so better things are to come.
i just wish DT would stop worrying about singles, and such, cmon, it's not 1991 anymore, MTV and radio dont really care about rock/metal in general, let alone DT. They dont need singles!!!

Yeah this really only confirmed my expectations of the album (which wasnt a good thing). It actually reminded me most of train of thought, that one verse sounded straight out of in the name of god. Really though I just found the song to be really predictable, its just like they have a formula now for a song that will appeal to their fans. I would really like to see a solo from petrucci or rudess that actually fits with the song or has some emotion for once. Like you guys said though, it could just be that this is the single so we shouldnt expect anything better.

Even on their weaker albums some really good material can be found. I mean, even FII and SC had some great moments.

Might be something they're doing for Roadrunner. I sympathize ... why not promote the music a bit to audiences that wouldn't normally listen to prog. Might get them some gigs at festivals, too.

^What do you mean give up that easily? I spent time being hopeful for Octavarium being good. I didn't enjoy it. I spent another 2 years hoping Systematic Chaos would be good. There is only one song from that album I really enjoy, the rest is "Dream Theater's business as usual" or just plain crap (Prophets of War, Forsaken). I don't think waiting 2 years after hearing an album you didn't like in the hope the next one would be any good is a case of giving up easy. I gave the band plenty of time I've been heavily disappointed 3 times a in a row. This is before I even take into account I was disappointed by 6DOIT despite how much people hyped it up for me. I don't know why I should bother taking the time with the band anymore to be honest, there aren't any signs the band is going to put out an album anymore that is going be worth my time anyway. Plenty of other bands I've heard in recent months that are really doing it for me anyway, so I'm not overly worried about one band not putting out albums I like anymore. Plenty more good music out there, just (IMO) Dream Theater isn't one of the bands doing it anymore.

yeah they lost me after octavarium, havent been too excited about them in a while, although i did like the fact that they actually changed up the pace every album from SFAM to ToT. every album was a little bit different and i respect that. these last few have been a rehashing of octavariums/ToT's weaker moments. meh. wont be buying. maybe if they did something like they did initially with train of thought id be interested. lets ACTUALLY try and be metal for once. it obviously wasnt perfect but at least it was different.
anyways sorry to troll this thread, i wont be back to argue. dt's too easy to hate, especially if they used to be your favorite band. :(

Ok, so you simply don't like modern Dream Theater. I just meant that you probably can't judge their new album by just this one song ... as you can't judge Systematic Chaos by listening to Forsaken. I agree with your conclusion though ... it's somewhat unlikely that you'll enjoy their next album.

But you absolutely can. It might be a bit poppy, but quality wise it's about average of the album. Three tracks that are better, three that are worse, and they don't stray that much from each other either.

Personally, we should better stopgiving a f**k about what people think of the music we like.
Anyway, as with any other band with a 20+ year career, one just can't wait for revolutionary albums every single time... Awake little people! Your loved bands that put music so revolutionary right now will be doing the same sh*t if you give them enough time! Just wait to see if any of your bands lasts 20+ years and let's see then... If every damn album is revolutionary, well, we'll agree:
it was worth all your precious time.
I haven't heard the track released. I'm going to listen to the album in its entirety in june 23. I'll be going to their concert in prognation also. I'll have to endure Zappa plays Zappa but what the hell...
Oh... And I like Forsaken. There are other DT songs I don't like (I don't like them ALL) but Forsaken is quite appealing to me. Maybe I'm a pop-b*****d after all.

There are bad songs on the more successful DT albums too. One song does not an album break. It doesn't make sense to give up on an album because of it.

But listening to that song made me think that they are using the same formula over and over again on their latests releases. where's the innovation and spark that made them the masters of prog metal way back in the 90's. That was exactly how I felt. I didn't like Train of Thought because I'm not so much of a metal fan, but at least it was trying something new and not recycling an old formula. I have respect for the band and everything they have brought us, but if they are going to do this they deserve to be criticized for it.

Don't really know if it's aimed at my post or Mike's
"
Why do we have to try to convince people of liking whatever we
like? Is it that we're insecure of our tastes or of the intelligence or
quality of those tastes tyhat we desperately need more people to
confirm our predilections?" That's why I'm not getting whether it's aimed at mine or Mike's. I didn't like the track I heard anyway, well the 2 tracks I've heard, so I can hardly convince anyone of liking what I like if I didn't even like it Wouldn't say I'm insecure about my tastes either. I openly admitted at school to liking classical music and jazz a while back and as usual, got flamed for it. Most people in a school environment where you need to fit an image of "cool" and "popular", even if they were jazz or classical fans, would most likely keep it in the closet because of how insecure they would feel knowing their peers would beat down on them. I'm a very f**king weird person with weird habits, behavioral patterns (borderline OCD and the list doess't stop there) etc and very open about it. Hardly insecure if you ask me. And anyway, no where did I say any band has to release album upon album of revolutionary music, and that term is somewhat subjective anyway. I just want to hear albums of a band improving upon themselves as musicians, and putting out great, inspiring music. Dream Theater hasn't done any of that for me in recent years and the latest clips have shown me nothing has changed, the band has reached a point of stagnation. I can think of many bands where over the last 5 or 10 years, where the musicianship increased a lot and the song writing skill improved dramatically. And there are signs these bands are going to stop yet. Frank Zappa released more than 2 and a half decades worth of music in the time that he was alive that was challenging and pushed him as a musician, with no compromise. It can be done if an artist is willing to put in the effort. Dream Theater are only content to release album after album of what is starting to get really samey prog metal. As individuals, they are gifted musicians, I cannot argue with that. But as a collective, their output is nowhere near as challenging for them as musicians, as what they could potentially do. I'm not asking for the band to revolutionize prog metal once again, because that's a huge ask that's just too much for anyone. I was just hoping the band was going to put out albums of stuff that shows they are inspired enough as musicians to push themselves to new heights, rather than leaving the bar for themselves at the same level it has been for years.

^^ well said, no doubt. But personally, having more than 15 years of listening to prog, rock, metal, jazz, classical, dance, pop, country etc. under my belt ... like I said elsewhere, I simply don't have that great expectations anymore when it comes to experimentation and innovation in music. I understand you, Harry, if you prefer the experimental side of things ... for me it was a phase that lasted about 4-5 years. I'm not saying that it has to be the same for you, I'm just describing how it was for me.
Doesn't have much to do with the new DT album though ... like I also said elsewhere, IMO it's inspiration that they lack. But the same can be said about most of the big players in prog, be it Rock or Metal. King Crimson, Peter Hammill ... I can't think of many more artists who manage to still publish inspired music after 20+ years and 10+ albums.

^By the way my post was actually aimed at the whole damn thing but the exchange between Harry and Mike was a perfect example....
And of course, I understand all of what Harry says, since it's pretty logical. I think we all can agree DT's revolutionary phase is way behind them now...
it's actually when a band's career enters the not-revolutionary stage when those who will always be fans appear... those who will listen to their music even if it's just slightly different from time to time. That's what any fanbase of a music band is based upon. Everybody can be fan of the novelty thing... Those who stick for ever are fans in the real sense of the word. Not a qualifying term anyway, it's neither good nor band to be a fan, but it's an explanation of what it means.
Hell... AC/DC started repeating themselves in the second record.... And using just three chords! DT at least uses tons of them...

Yes, it's definitely a matter of inspiration. Dream Theater's recent music has not been backed by genuine feeling and inspiration. The thing is, if you're inspired, you're going to find a way to have your own sound, own identity, etc. It's not necessarily "experimentation" we're looking for, but rather an obviously creative, singular effort. Dream Theater's first few albums aren't what anyone would consider "experimental" music, but the band was definitely experimenting with new ideas for songwriting and performing constantly. This kept each album fresh and all the while DT never lost their identity. Now DT is just fooling around with styles for fun and such and it's not really from the heart. The songs on Systematic Chaos weren't bad songs; they were definitely written and performed by skilled musicians. They just weren't great songs. And with all the great music that exists out there, why would I want to settle of merely good music?
These new songs don't have an identity, and they don't have any soul. That's the main problem. And unfortunately for DT, they're not the only muscians capable of playing what they play anymore. Nowdays, there are bands that can play just as fast and just as complex of rhythm patterns and so on. And many of them are doing something that still sounds fresh, not just modifying the DT formula.
There are still plenty of bands doing new things, but only the truly inspired, passionate ones are the ones that you'll find yourself listening to. I agree that many great bands start to lose inspiration after 10-20 years. It's the same thing that happened to the greats of the 70s. I'm not disappointed in the least in them. It's completely understandable. And it's not like I don't have enough new music to listen to that I actually find to be great. Dream Theater will always have a special place in my life, but their reign over the world of progressive metal is obviously over.

Sorry I'm interrupting another dead-horse-beaten conversation, but personally, I felt this single was sort of a reminder of "Pull Me Under" and "New Millenium", and I've listened to it twice. Not sure where the Forsaken parallels come from, but then again, I don't think C&C is prog, and everybody else seems to think so.

I'm not very satisfied. The chorus is mindblowing, but the first verse is awful and the solo is unnecessary (that's based on hearing the leaked version on YouTube...)

I actually think the song is pretty cool. I've heard one other (15 minute epic) and it's really cool.

BTW: The video is now available on their website ... so everyone who missed the 24 hours of the mp3 download can now listen to the track again:

I somehow like that video. It's pretty cheesy, but also kinda cool.

The video's production values are through the f**king roof. Roadrunner is pumping a lot of money into them...
Personally I like the song so far... and it sounds like they're going for a new direction in their music. Who knows!

Damn people... I couldn't resist... I heard 70% of the song..... I won't listen any more of the album until june 23 and july 24 when I have first row tickets...
Well... I like it. The main riff is just OK... Sounds very Octavarium-meets-SChaos.... but the chorus is actually almost a return, in melody, to the times of SFAM.... I like it very much. Yes, the song doesn't brek any new barriers... Well... DT have been around for more than 20 years... They don't HAVE to break any barriers anymore... leave that to new bands who are in that experimenting stage of their lives... At least this song is a good indication that I will enjoy the record.
The video is quite cool too. I don't like music videos that much but it was nice. Like the dark atmosphere. In general, I don't care for videos. But it's kinda cool.

I wonder how their next album will be...
I mean the one after BCSL. Would you say most bands go through stages? A beginning "test the waters phase"
Kill Em All, When dream and day unite, Rage for Order, rocka rolla, etc...
Moving into their creative peak
RTL-AJFA, I&W-somewhere around 6DOIT, Mindcrime-Promised land, Sad wings-painkiller, etc...
Leading into the slump
Load-, TOT-, Q2K-, Ram it down-, etc.
Leading into an attempt to either recapture the sound of old successes or experiment in a new way sometimes considered a ..."comeback"
Death magnetic, BCSL, Mindcrime II/American Soldier, Nostradamus, etc.
Is this the slump era for DT? Will this album lead them further into mediocrity? I don't feel they have hit rock bottom, just yet, because I still sort of liked SC, where as I absolutely despised Q2K...
I will be getting this album no matter what, though.

It's not that DT isn't breaking any new barriers, it's that they don't sound inspired.

The video was kind of boring, at least for me. I mean, there's the band playing in black outfits for most of the video, interspliced with a few freemasons doing some alchemic stuff. I dunno, boring.
The way the video was pulled off, plus the kind of poppy chorus made me think of Nightwish. I don't really know. They seem to be headed in that direction. Though the tempo change/more metallic riffing bridge in the middle of "A Rite of Passage" totally made me think of Trivium, so they're probably leaning towards more metal stuff too.

I personally get the feeling the "goth" tone of this album will be a one-off, or at least much more refined/toned-down on the next one. I can't imagine DT staying still with this image.

Quite interesting video - I quite liked this darkish atmosphere.
The song is good, nothing too special, the chorus is typical melodic DT, the riffs are getting heavier and heavier. I think that's the right way for DT to go forward, heavier and heavier...

have not heard this single, am buying the album the day it comes out regardless I for one liked Systematic Chaos (sans Constant Motion which wasn't THAT bad and Prophets of War which was better when Muse did it) a LOT more than the two albums that preceded it
edit: listening to single now, liking it, and the video is lol

By the way, in the second verse:
"Men of wealth and power Influence and fame Philosophers and leaders...."
Wealth. Power. Influence. Fame.
Philosophers.
Oh God I lol'd.

they SHOULD get heavier and heavier, but less metal. where's the freedom and inspiration of LTE? they should take 3 years instead of 2 after this album.
im still getting BCSL! and new TMV! June 23 will be a busy day!

What the hell, everyone to his own.
I know that I'm going to enjoy the album, DT hasn't disappointed me yet.
There, I said it. Only now I can't go out anymore for fear of getting lynched in the marketplace.
At the very least I've just lost any prog-cred. Yo, Bitches! this honkey mofo gonna take HIT (or something).
Sorry, gotta go now and practise some handshakes.
