So I won the Doug Larson prize, and I'm stoked about it.  But I could use some help from my friends here! Smile

I'm thinking of broadening my horizons a little bit (or a lot), or possibly adding to my collection a highly regarded old gem, or just getting Space Revolver. Wink

So, those of you who know me and those who don't- which of these albums do you think I should acquire?

Robert - I think you will find "Phallus Dei" a rewarding listen but if you have not experienced Amon Duul II before, I would recommend you start with "Tanz de Lemming" or 'Yeti". It was the latter album that hooked me into ADII. Cheers Smile

I want to tell you to get Maltid - 100% 5-star RIO, that one - but knowing you as I do Gnidrolog would probably be a safer bet.

I've been thinking about ordering the Willowglass albums, but so far I've pretty much forgotten about it, so you could get that one and tell me if it's any good Tongue

Space Revolver is the only one of those I've heard, it seems to be a pretty good album judging by a couple of listens.

Well, first of all, I think you're winning too many times, Rob. Wink

Now, if Rico would have won a Doug Larson Imports award, he would get Maltid, regardless if he'd like it or not, because it's a wacky way to celebrate winning an award.

But since Rob won a Doug Larson Imports award, I'd say Willowglass.

I know three of these, and I can't say The Flower Kings are my sort of band.

Phallus Dei is crazy, experimental psychedelic stuff, and if you're starting with Amon Duul II, I think Wolf City or Yeti would be more sophisticated and impressive examples. The Gnidrolog double is a prime example of value for money, with one exceptionally brilliant album and another fairly good one (Lady Lake being the latter, though for most people it's the other way round). Grave New World is great stuff.

That said, I voted Gnidrolog... very distinctive material.

Yeah, but did you just see Sinkadoten's review....check it out.  Maybe you could try Per Un Amico or Storia Minuto, those are the early ones that help suck people into RPI and might be cheaper.

Stati comes with a DVD, or at least it used to, which makes it pricey.  But its worth it, the DVD is a blast with the music.

Yes.  The version comes with a DVD, hence the price.

Here's my take:

#1 If you're feeling adventurous, get Samla Mammas Manna.
#2 If you're not feeling adventurous and want to get TFK's 2nd best album, get Space Revolver. That's a very decent backup.

Runners-up:
3. Amon Duul II
4. Gnidrolog

Only have heard Space Revolver, and knowing you're quite a big fan of the modern Symph bands, this should be a great album for you.

However, honestly even without having heard the rest of the albums, I would go for something from that, even though it's not a "safe play" like Space Revolver would be, you might find a pretty amazing surprise, while from Space Revolver not.

No vote.

Knowing your taste a little bit i'd stay away from AMON DUUL II even though that is my favourite from the list(no accouning for tasteLOL) . I think you'll like GNIDROLOG or the STRAWBS the best.

Get Phallus Dei , the version with bonus tracks which is beautifully crafted. Also it's a very interesting starting point if you haven't got into the german stuff yet.

Congratulations!

I recommended Space Revolver for you, because it's my favorite out of those I know on your list.

It really depends on what you are in the mood for, though.  I go through phases when I collect music.  Most recently it has been Prog, in many of its forms.  More recently, though, it was Jazz, and before that, Classical.  Are you in any particular mood?  Remember, what you don't buy now, will be available for your purchase later on.

Grave New World.

If you can get the vinyl for the artwork alone, it's worth it.

It's an astonishing album anyway; a concept album of the journey through life and with astonishing variety of styles.

If you like beautiful and melodic music(i know you do) take Finnforest's advise and get one of PFM's early classic cds. You'll seriously wonder why it took you so long.

Gnidrolog- In Spite Of Harry's Toe-Nail/Lady Lake - that's two classics for the prize of one. Many seem to prefer the latter, but In Spite is their fivestar-masterpiece for me.

Gnidrolog is my second choice on hat list before Srtrawbs and ADII, but behind Samla's Maltid.

Hands down the winner, becaise I think Gnidrolog's two album deserve their own discs each.

I don't know how much Krautrock you have heard  - I have heard very few albums myself to be fair - so my recommendation of Phallus Dei depends on that.  Failing that, Grave New World is my next pick, beautiful album that you can't go wrong with. Smile

Of these I think I'd recommend for you these albums in the order you've listed them: Strawbs, then Gnidrolog.... Actually, I don't have that WIllowglass one though I'm sure I've heard samples.

My favourites of these are Malted, Phallus' Day Out (in honour of a recent nude bicycle-riders parade in Vancouver), and In Spite of Hairy Toe-Jam/ Lady Leak.

Did you listen to the streaming mp3s?

Here's a great one to try from SMM (if you don't like this, then I wouldn't recommend the album -- hope the link works): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMFoZ8rPsHQ&feature=PlayList&p=B7C678638F94A8F9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=56www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMFoZ8rPsHQ&feature=PlayList&p=B7C678638F94A8F9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=56 - CLICK

Thanks for your help everyone!

Due to availability issues, I have selected Willowglass's Book of Hours (gotta have some symph, yes?) and something to expand my horizons: Amon Duul II's Yeti.  I think I will enjoy both (I listened to Amon Duul II's samples here, and liked what I heard).

So the two lowest voted bands on the poll, nice. LOL

That being said, regarding Yeti, I think you'll be happy with the purchase.  It's some incredibly well crafted stuff, and the improv stuff is at least at the same level as the studio work.

Actually really good album, there - be curious to read your opinion.

Based on what I've heard from ADII, I should enjoy it.  Smile  I just make jokes about improv because of "Moonchild" and Henry Cow, you know.  LOL

Honestly, unless I'm paying a lot of attention while listening, I don't even notice when they go from the written pieces to the improv.  As Padraic said, it's definitely a really good album overall though.
