I'm an American (even though some people don't consider California to be part of the U.S.). During my album purchasing days I favored European music over American music and my collection reflects that.
But, I'm willing to admit that I may possibly have overlooked some good bands and I expect some of you to correct this oversight.
I'll start with bands I did not overlook and you can take it from there.
Electromagnets
Crack The Sky
Ethos
Pavlov's Dog
Fire Ballet
Starcastle
Frijid Pink
The Flock
Kansas

Lots of good suggestions here.  My addition: Tempest.  They hail from the Bay Area.  If you want to see a double-necked electric mandolin-mandola, this is the band to see.  Thumbs Up

BTW:  I too am from California, and consider those who don't consider us to be part of the US as just plain wrong.  There are a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about this state. Angry

The United States is very strong in Prog Metal with there being too many bands to mention although i have to say FATES WARNING is a fav of mine.I include Experimental/Tech and Post Metal when i mention Prog Metal.  They are also huge when it come to jazz with Miles Davis,WEATHER REPORT,Pat Metheny,Herbie Hancock,Tony Williams and on and on.
Other bands i like are FROGG CAFE, DJAM  KARET, CHROMA KEY,THE MUFFINS and Post Rock bands like RUSSIAN CIRCLES and RED SPAROWES. So many more though.

Birdsongs of the Mesozoic is interesting if you don't mind music that sounds like a cross between Schoenberg and train wreck.

A group from the 80's Art in America sounds a little dated today maybe, but I enjoyed them a lot when they first came out -- and they were produced or engineered by Eddie Offord.

And my current favorite US band The Ozone Quartet is fantastic, but I think they are no more.

Also -- you know Canada is part of North America last time I looked.  Did anyone mention Rush?  Well then how about Miriodor, a greatly weird sort of RIO surreal experience?

California's best prog band is probably Djam Karet, but most often Spock's Beard seems to get those honors.

This new retro-prog band that's getting some attention is Astra. Based in SoCal (San Diego) where Tarantula Hawk (now defunct) were from...

Atavism Of Twilight...also defunct, also from SoCal. The bassist is now in Djam Karet.

K2's Ken Jaquess was originally in Atlantis, a symph-prog trio with a couple albums.

I have a big list of interesting bands from America that I could show here. But I would like to make you a question before: When you talk about "American Prog?", are you considering the whole American Continent (ya know: Central America & South America too), or just only North American bands???

I tell you this because here in Europe we often see how (in the films, magazines, news...), people in U.S.A. call their country just like "America" (what isn´t correct), and perhaps if I put on here a list of bands from Uruguay, Argentina, etc etc...(there were excellent bands) maybe it won´t be what you were looking for. I´m confused about your requests...

Just for clearing up my doubts.

Thanx.
Cheers,

Sergio.

Unfortunately, here in the US there is this tendency to refer to the country as 'America' , forgetting that we're talking about a much bigger continent. So, I am sure the original intention was to refer to US prog.

In France as well, if you say "l'Amérique" (America) everyone knows you are talking about the USA. And "les Américains" (Americans) is the most common term to qualify US inhabitants.

Hey, I've always thought it a tad bit arrogant that most of us US Americans go around calling ourselves America.  Just think of it as a nickname.  After all, no other country in this hemisphere has America as part of their country name.  And I'll take no offense if you just refer to us as gringos. LOL  Gringo Norte Americanos anyone? Tongue

What's really also kind of funny this hemisphere takes it's name from an Italian, Amerigo Vespucci.  Although according to Wiki, there's some dispute about whether or not that's valid.  But that's what I was taught at some point in history class.

Hi,

The sad thing about any prog in America is that it's success is limited ... with top ten ruling the air waves and things like Sirius being just another AM station and glorifying hits to ensure that ASCAP/BMI get paid, the chance of a lot of these other bands making it is very tough ...

And this is the reason why some of these bands do so well in other countries, like The Rocket Scientists do great in Japan and Europe ... but in 1999 in SF when they played their hearts out at the Music Festival, people were not interested because they came to see Brand X and Porcupine Tree that night ... and they were prepared, good, and in my book put on a fabulous show ... talk about professionalism ... it's really hard to beat that ... it really is ... there is not much more that you can ask of a band.

America is too much top ten oriented ... and it's really sad when really good people like this, and many others, are ignored ...

Posted By: GaryB
Date Posted: June 16 2009 at 11:20
I agree that America is and has long been top ten oriented. Fortunately, I have enough "non commercial" music to listen to.
Although I am out of touch with the music of today, I saw a lot of bands "make it" in the sixties and seventies and that was a tough market.
I honestly don't know what it would take for a new band to "break into" todays music scene.

The official name is "The United States of America" so that means calling us Americans is proper for both the country and the continent. Our founding Fathers were already spinning copyrights and trademarks. Wink

BTW to refer to an earlier post there are two continents called America North and South not one.

Most of the the US  bands have been listed but I didn't see Helmet of Gnats a great fusion band out of Conneticutt.  Also Enchant from the bay area with a little prog metal.

Call me crazy (an invitation, I know) but I think, if just for Mister Heartbreak, I'd name Laurie Anderson!  Plenty prog musicians on it, and written with all the extension and intensity that goes into a good prog record.  I wish she would have continued with albums like this one.

Umphrey's McGee.  (Yeah, scraping I know.  Guess there's nothing else to name...?  Great thread though, thank you.)

Edit: from a guy calling himself American Khatru, I'll tell you the term "American" is not solely ours.  I have friendships with Mexicans, living in Mexico, and they are Americans too.  Many of them, to avoid confusion in company, use the funny term "United Staters" (and not always contemptuously).  I used "American" in my forum name only because "New Yorkian Khatru" sounded horrible LOL.

Just added GAMES to the ProgFreak charts.
Hope the crossover prog team will accept its inclusion in PA. Here is the bio I wrote for them ;

"Games was a one-shot album band that were highly talented but never got the recognition they deserved. They played ear-candy progressive pop at a time when punk was making a breakthrough in the musical world. Information about them is almost inexisting. Their unique album ‘stargazer’ is available on vinyl format on a label specializing in ultrarare psychedelic rock albums “hippedelic records” at a price with 3 figures. If comparisons are needed, one could cite Supertramp for the proggy side, ABBA & Earth Wind & Fire for their disco side, Larry Fast and Eddie Jobson (at the time of UK’s ‘Danger Money’) for the keyboard work, and Billy Joel for the pop side. The album is flawless, dynamic, and features stunning female lead and back vocals. One complaint could be on the length of the record as it clocks in 38 mn. A long-lost forgotten gem that should be (re)discovered."

Another recent addition to the list of great American Prog bands is a band out of California called "The Source."
They are a group of young guys in their 20s playing some very enjoyable progressive rock.  They have 2 albums to their credit:
All Along This Land (2006)
Prickly Pear (2009)

Rumor has it that in August they will be on a short California Tour with another California prog band called Fractal.

Peace.Clap

You could do worse than to check out Days Between Stations, a Californian band, so you'd be supporting one of your own!

Also:

Phideaux
Discipline
Timothy Pure
Zombi
Chronicles of Israfel
