Other.  Classics: High Tide and Birth Control spring to mind.  In modern heavy prog, I like Maxwell's Demon.

I haven't explored heavy prog in much depth.

OK, out of this list, it's Rush and TMV for me (not a big fan of either Heep or PT). However, there are so many other bands in HP that deserve to be mentioned: Anekdoten, Captain Beyond, High Tide, Atomic Rooster, Quatermass....

As much as I love PT, one of the finest modern prog bands, it has to be Rush, if nothing else for the sheer volume of consistently excellent output over the last 30 odd years.

I wish they wereCry.... In my opinion they are, at least up to Fireball, but getting them moved to HP would mean opening the gates of hell, and I'll leave it at that. Anyway, if you want to know more about HP, look at the definition and list of bands. Lots of very interesting stuff thereClap!

I totally agree with your opinion of Deep Purple.
Guru Guru dabbled in many different styles; their second album "Hinten" is heavy prog.
Early Wallenstein were heavy too with albums like "Blitzkrieg".
High Tide have already been mentioned; they were incredibly heavy for their time. Just listen to this storming smoker from 1969:

Voted for The Mars Volta for the consistency. Five albums, all of them at least four stars. Rush has almost as many five star albums, but also many others that can't climb higher than three. Porcupine is very fine as is the Heep I'm familiar with, but not at all on the same page as those.

High Tide is awesome, I love their s/t album.

There are the obvious choices, some of which are in the poll options and others such as Anekdoten et al, which I will not go into.

I'd rather mention bands less mentioned like:

../artist.asp?id=4049 - CARGO CULT REVIVAL - CT based instrumental quartet, including an electric cell in the lineup, that has released two albums so far, with a cool vibe and psych elements.

../artist.asp?id=411 - COBWEB STRANGE - an interesting group from Atalanta with a special sound. Listen here - http://www.myspace.com/cobwebstrange - http://www.myspace.com/cobwebstrange

../artist.asp?id=3213 - DEFORMICA - Argentinian band with references in King Crimson and psych sounds.

../artist.asp?id=2953 - NAIKAKU - Brilliant Japanese instrumental group, heavy, dynamic, thrilling!

../artist.asp?id=4381 - OPRAM - French band which released only one album, a live one called Live. Recommended!

../artist.asp?id=3347 - POSEIDOTICA - More great music from Argentina! Instrumental lineup that released two engaging albums so far.

../artist.asp?id=2188 - T2 - An old one, yes... But worth a mention cause ../album.asp?id=10118 - It'll All Work Out In Boomland has been recently reissued.

../artist.asp?id=464 - TILES - Though I am not that enthusiastic about them and I dislike their last album Fly Paper, they still are a band to consider and listen to and which will appeal to many I believe.

There's more, but I haven't got the time right now to go on. But I hope it's enough to entice people to investigate these and others.

Granted Volta, PT, Anekdoten.. haven't been around as long,  making it hard to compare!

I could name lots. For starters: Guru Guru and Embryo. But alas, who is familiar with Guru Guru, and Embryo are even less known, though both bands have a huge catalogue and have been around for over 40 years now.
Magma, Gong and Hawkwind are some other bands I would put on that list.

I disagree about Guru Guru, and Hawkwind at least, haven't heard enough of the other bands' discographies.

It does come down to taste, for how many 3 star albums do you think rush had? and using the prog criteria or general rating scale? Only full star increments or half..? etc.

Exactly, it all comes down to taste. I disagree about Rush, but that just goes to show we are all different; for me not even one Rush album is five stars; their average is around three at best. But that's just me.

I have no idea which Guru Guru albums you know; we have them all, even those which are not in  the archives (about half of their discography is missing; I will add the others one by one during the next few days. I already added "Guru Mani Neumeiers neue Abenteuer").
Anyway, it is not surprising that you don't agree about Guru Guru if Rush is your favourite band; the two bands have different philosophies and a totally different approach to music. While Rush more or less stick to one style Guru Guru change their style completely on almost every album, which has of course a lot to do with the many line-up changes. New people bring new ideas.
The only real heavy album of Guru Guru is "Hinten", but even that one is probably not to the liking of a Rush fan.
