Subject: Dream Theater vs. Iron Maiden
Date Posted: July 05 2009 at 19:51

Before I got into Dream Theater a freind told me that I would enjoy them more than Iron Maiden. I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and have been for some time. Well I've been into Dream Theater for about a year now. Yet when I listen to my favorite Iron Maiden albums and my favorite Dream Theater albums, I still enjoy Iron Maiden more. I might be a bit bias because I've been into Iron Maiden for years.

So who do you like better and why?

Personally I enjoy Iron Maiden more for the following reasons( these are just my own opinions):

1. Bruce Dickinson is a better singer than James Labrie
2. Steve Harris is a better bassist than John Myung
3. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have more emotion in thier guitar playing than Petrucci and over all I think they have better solos
4. Even though Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, Nicko Mcbrain is just as good and can easily pull off anything Portnoy can play.
5. And even though it has nothing to do with the music, golden era Iron Maiden has better album covers : )

In what ways do you think points two through four are false. I don't necessarily mean immensely better but in my mind they are better.

I prefer DT to IM overall, but both are good...

For the points you gave:
1. Disagree
2. Agree (Mainly because you can hardly hear Myung on their last 5 studio albums)
3. Agree 110%
4. Disagree; Portnoy is a better drummer IMO.
5. Easily agree; DT album art never did anything for me, other than let me know which album I'm looking at.

Good list!

Maiden.. Im not a huge fan of DT and Maiden was my first ever concert so they're a special band for me. But imo Portnoy is by far the better drummer

Iron Maiden easily but i do like Dream Theater. I agree pretty much with your five points except i'd take Portnoy over McBrain.

Probably DT just because they have Scenes From A Memory on their side, but The Maiden has a few great albums as well.

Point 1- Occasionally true
Point 2- True
Point 3- Not even a remotely intelligent statement
Point 4- Are you kidding???
Point 5- True

DT by far, and all the musicians are better in it too, except Dickinson is a better singer than LaBrie... at least, a "cooler" one anyway... I actually like DT album covers better, Maiden ones are just scenes that include that zombie guy, Powerslave being the coolest, but DT's Awake, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes from a Memory, Train of Thought, and Octavarium have cooler album art, imo.

#1 Bruce has a wider range it seems, but it's close
#2 Equal level
#3 When Petrucci plays some emotional stuff, he really pulls it off, IMO
#4 Portnoy wins for me
#5 Never liked both, but Maiden's seems more creative.

Both very talented bands though I prefer Dream Theater. Have in mind that I'm not a metal fan by any means.

I disagree on all points except the first and last one.  And yet I vote for Iron Maiden because a better bunch of musicians need not necessarily make better albums.  Maiden have got terribly repetitive over the years but they were great in the 80s.  And I think LaBrie has a larger range than Bruce but that's the only aspect in which I would rate him over Bruce.

#1. Disagree, but it's just a matter of opinion
#2 Disagreed, and laughed too to be honest. I'm also starting to wonder if most people's ears aren't trained enough to hear Myung's bass playing. Because I always hear it quite clearly.
#3 Emotion maybe. Better solos, no way.
#4 Portnoy can be underrated on this site sometimes, although I will agree that before Black Clouds, he hadn't had an incredibly strong performance since Train of Thought.
#5 I like both about equally to be honest. Although if we're comparing both bands' classic era, then probably Iron Maiden, since they hold more nostalgia for me and helped me get into music in the first place.

I'll take DT over Maiden, but I've been getting back into Maiden a bit over the past month.  I was pretty big into Iron Maiden when I was 16-18, but after seeing them live once, that was pretty much where my interest in them peaked, and I gradually drifted from them.

While I don't imagine I'll ever like the band as much as I did when I was a teenager, it was fun watching the second hand copy of their Live After Death DVD I picked up a few days ago.

Maiden by far.I just find DT pretentious and cheesy.
Despite there incredible musicianship they'll never evolve there sound like there contemporys and influences.

Really easy choice for me since DT is my favorite band and I never really liked IM.
I won't comment TheLastBaron points because it would be completely unfair (reason showed in the first sentence Smile).

I never really were into Maiden, maybe I'm not old enough to have seen them rise over the metal world, but I could never stand Steve Harris's loud bass playing.
So I went with DT, even though their latest albums have disappointed me.

2. Yeah, arguably
3. 1/2 way. I think that technically Petrucci is a better guitarist but certainly not emotionally.
4. No...
5. Yeah, I've never really liked any of the DT album covers.

Iron Maiden, not only because I still listen to them while I'm 30 years old now (while I stop listening to Dream Theater before I was 25) but also because I'm beginning to be sick when watching the number of topics talking about DT.

Sorry Maiden, it's just gotta be DT!
I'm no expert bassist but I would reckon Myung to be marginally ahead of Harris.  Petrucci is miles ahead of the Maiden guitarists.  Portnoy is miles and miles ahead of McBain.  Overall, I'd say Maiden's album covers are perhaps slightly superior to DT's.

Maybe......I prefer Harris!

I simply disagree completely with this. I like Maiden, but most solo's are dull.

Dream Theater hands down.

Originally posted by TheLastBaron TheLastBaron wrote:

Bruce Dickinson has a better range, Labrie is probably more versatile. I'd take Geoff Tate above either though.
2. Steve Harris is a better bassist than John Myung
Maybe more to your taste, I quite like Steve Harris' bass playing, but on a technical level no way (watch the DVDs).
3. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have more emotion in thier guitar playing than Petrucci and over all I think they have better solos
I notice you've not said they're better here, as with point 2 it's a matter of taste. Petrucci when he's not doing the technical stuff can do emotion very well - the Hollow Years solo at Live at Budokan springs to mind here. The only Maiden solo I can really get excited about is 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'.
4. Even though Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, Nicko Mcbrain is just as good and can easily pull off anything Portnoy can play.
Not in a million years. Nicko McBrain is a fine drummer, but one that doesn't like using double bass pedals, something Portnoy excels at and is heavily used in DT songs. That doesn't make Portnoy a better drummer, but he's got that in his armoury whilst Nicko doesn't. I find Portnoy's drumming is a lot more interesting to listen to.
5. And even though it has nothing to do with the music, golden era Iron Maiden has better album covers : )
Agree with you there. But that's more Derek Riggs vs. Dave McKean, Hugh Syme et al.

Dickenson has more power and control, IMO, and a richer tone.
2. Steve Harris is a better bassist than John Myung
Not at all - Harris keeps to a more traditional bass style.  Not to say he's bad, though.
3. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have more emotion in thier guitar playing than Petrucci and over all I think they have better solos
My favorite aspect of the Murry & Smith team is when they synchronize, but Petrucci smokes them seven ways to Sunday.
4. Even though Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, Nicko Mcbrain is just as good and can easily pull off anything Portnoy can play.
McBrain is like Harris - keeps it more simple, even if he is good.  Portnoy pounds circles around him.
5. And even though it has nothing to do with the music, golden era Iron Maiden has better album covers : )
Having an easily identifiable mascot is always a good marketing decision.  The schtick of Eddie got old for me, but the horrorshow nature of it is entertaining.
DT is a more technical band, which I always appreciate but don't always enjoy.  IM is more fun to listen to, but I have never taken them that seriously.  So that makes them equal for me.

As awesome as Maiden is, its gotta be DT.
1. Pretty much, yea
2. Myung is hard to hear sometimes but he's still better in my book
3. Maiden guitar solos don't sound as diverse as Petrucci's
4. Mcbrain probably COULD pull off what Portnoy plays, however Portnoy playing Mcbrains drum beats would seem easy to him.
5. Black Clouds and Silver Linings is probably the best of DT's, but your right, it can't compare with and Maiden covers Wink

I also forgot about the whole Portnoy double bass petal thing. I guess that after more thought I stil enjoy Iron Maiden more but both bands are great.

Iron Maiden by far

I loved them as a kid (4 years ago) for different reasons than I love them now, but I love them the same

DT annoys me for the same reason I loved them a few years back

and another factor, Iron Maiden's lyrics are much much much better than Dream Theater's (although both have had some downright terrible lyrics)

but the best lyrics for Maiden are far better than Dream Theater's best imo

Ok - Firstly I would like to sat I bought Running Free by Maiden so I was in from the beginning.

1.  Yes I agree - Labrie can do some excellent vocals - but he is not consistant enough IMHO
2.  Steve Harris is the band leader, so his bass is more to the front.  I like his bass too, but Myung again IMHO is more technically gifted.  See DT's DVDs
3.  Petrucci for me - he can do emotion when he needs to - its the style of Music DT play that negates emotion, although BC&SL is very emotional,
4.  No competition - Portnoy rules ok
5.  Iron Maiden - but take away Eddie, and their covers are kind of non-descript.

Great bands though - both

Oh no!  Two of my FAVE bands - what a choice!

You do indeed seem a bit biased, TheLastBaron!  I too have been a Maiden fan for years, since Number of The Beast in fact, and have only been into Dream Theater since last Christmas.  However, I have voted them equal such is the impact DT's music has had on me!  As for the comparisons of the band members, here's who would win each category for me:-

Singer: Bruce Dickinson (the best singer in the world)
Bass: Steve Harris (nothing against Mr. Myung, but Harris is superb)
Drums: Mike Portnoy (the best drummer in the world)
Guitars: A draw (given that Petrucci is awesome, but Maiden have three of them!)
Keyboards: Er, I think Jordan Rudess wins that one!!

Nice poll, anyway! Clap

1. Definitely true (by far IMHO)
2. I'd say different, notn better but I prefer his bass playing (just a matter of taste)
3. They probably do - I can't comment on the overall part, they have all produced great solos
4. Completely false IMO
5. Agree 100% (although I like I&W cover)

In terms of overall music, it is of course an entirely subjective matter, but in terms of technical ability, (which really is neither here nor there, I know) Dream Theater are miles ahead.

Vocalists: The LaBrie vs Dickinson debate could go either way. I prefer James' voice, but he did not cover Maiden well at all.
Guitarists: John Petrucci is surely much faster, harmonically complex and cleaner than the IM trio.
Bassists: Have you SEEN Myung?! The most terrifying fingers in the world. Mixed down, but technically unrivalled.
Drummers: Portnoy isn't overly technical, but more so than Nicko, I would say.

Iron Maiden probably have a more authentic metal sound, but DT gets my vote anyway for very emotional and spirited compositions.

Un moment Monsieur... DT aren't that popular here in the UK... certainly not in my house (except Train of Thought, which I really like)

I'm no kid but I like Green Day AND the Stones about equally.

Maiden gets my vote by a long long way, but I guess I agree with the guys who say DT are "better" musicians. Doesn't mean I like their work as much as Maiden's tho.

How can you compare these two bands, pretty ridiculous.

As for singers, dickinson is, in my experience, a lot better than Labrie.
If I had to choose between the bests metal singers, Dickinson would be up there for sure.
If not as singer, than as a frontman.
I've seen both bands live and Labrie dissapointed me to say the least. He started of pretty OK, but towards the end he gets worse and worse until it starts being embarrassing.
Perhaps he had a bad day, but still.
The rest of the band played top notch.

Dickinson is the best live singer I've seen. He puts so much energy into every note. The fact that he still pulls of every scream at his age, amazed me a lot. I also think he's one the best frontmans of the scene.

As for the rest of the band, I think Dream Theater has more talented players, technically, but that doesn't make it a better band imo.

For me, Iron Maiden is a bigger name than Dream Theater, without looking at their reputation.
At the subject of album covers, the SFAM cover is pretty cool, but Iron maiden covers are one of the best around.

Beatles or Zep???

Purple or Ac/Dc???

Rush or David Bowie???

Pointless poll, they are great bands, but cannot be compared they are totally different, but both are to me the best exponents from their respective genres. In this case It's obvious that is not "necessary" to pick one of them if you like both genres.

This poll would be more accurate if it was "Heavy Metal or Porgressive Metal?" Wink

Maiden was,is and always will be the best metal band on the planet.

I don't dislike DT,it's just that I am becoming a little "disenfranchised" with them, mostly because of their recent slew of sub par albums.

Portnoy is indeed an amazing drummer, but Nicko is no slouch either. He doesn't play on a big monster kit and he abhors double bass pedals. How many drummers in metal play complex music like Maiden's and only use one bass drum anymore?I think Nicko is pretty damn talented myself.

First i would like to say that Iron Maiden was the first band i really listenned to and i still listen to them every day. But exept maiden i listen almost only to prog rock/ metal.

So here it is:
1. I would say  bruce is way superior to labrie, but labrie is damn skilled too.

2. Thought i prefere by far Harris sound and playing style, saying that is a better player than myung is totally stupide.

3. Guitar solos are the hardess thing to discuss, i think everyone agree with me. Petrucci's musical knowlenge is way ahead  Murray/ Smith/ Gers. Sir. Petrucci's solo album is really hard emotionally and technically. I dont know why but Maiden solo's since Brave New World deeply touch me. So Maiden for me.

4. Portnoy own! But Nicko got a particullar style and i love it so munch, and he is using a single bass pedal, listen to the ghost of the navigator. But no way he can own portnoy.

And 5. Derrek Riggs painting own totally, without him, Iron Maiden's artwork are not so intersting. Dance of Death is totally ugly (not by Mr.Riggs) And the sky in Brave New World is my favorite cover of all time (painted by Derek Riggs).

Iron Maiden or Dream Theater... Can't tell ya and I think no one will bring us an illumination, so lets wait for the end of their career to compare them, it will be more arguable.

Iron Maiden for me, because regardless of the technical abilities of any of the members of either respective band, I prefer the sound of Iron Maiden to that of Dream Theater.

How can they be so equal :O DT is way much better. There's some annoying things but even quick look at the amount of good compositions, DT just crushes Iron Maiden.

I don't know if they're fully comparable, but Iron Maiden wins in my case. Although they are as not as 'progressive' as DT (even though DT have strayed from the path in recent years) I find Maiden to be much more enjoyable. Bruce Dickinson will always remain as one of the best singers in metal, while I really can't stand LaBrie's voice (which doens't make him a bad singer per se). And Steve Harris is almost unbeatable on bass.

But anyway, my vote goes for Maiden. Love both, but Maiden has released more good stuff than DT.

I've seen both bands live, and the one that moved me more (by far) was Maiden. I do enjoy DT, but Maiden just gets me going in a much more visceral way.

Iron Maiden. By far.

Your points:

1. Although both are great singers in terms of vocal range, etc. I do like Bruce better.
2. John Myung gotta be the better of the two technically, but at least Steve can be heard on the albums.
3. I really don't enjoy Petrucci's playing a lot, while I like all three guitarists in Maiden.
4. There is no way McBrain can do what Portnoy can, but they're both great at their kind of music.
5. I don't think Dream Theater's artwork is all bad, but Maiden's look better.

they are both amazing bands but there is defiantly a difference in the two bands that makes DT the better band by far.

Dream Theater is more prog metal than prog rock which if you like that kind of genre makes them clear favorites over iron maiden. they also have more parts in their music that builds it up to be even better. so if DT were to play a song it would be like a full band with low, high, and middle sounding instruments. where iron maiden would only sound like a band with one or two different instruments if they were to play the same song their way.

I know that maiden is a very important band in the history of Metal and a mayor influence on Dream Theater, However I chose Dream Theater because DT's albums aren't just pure metal records as maiden's ar, but prog records and Prog is my music preference than Metal.Wink

WTF is with people saying you can't hear the bass? The bass is plenty present and clear on all the recent DT albums. A lot of the time in modern metal bass is just double the guitar riffs and acting as an extension of the low end, but it's definitely there. Just because a bass player isn't always play a constantly different part (like they might in fusion for example) doesn't make it inaudible. If you removed the bass from the DT tracks, they would sound incredibly thin. The whole point is that you don't really notice the bass because essentially , as I said, it's playing the role of acting as low end extension for electric guitar.

Anyway, that said, I love both bands, although prefer DT. IM has released one masterpiece IMO (Powerslave) while DT takes the cake with both Images and Words and Awake.
Maiden, great and all, but man they really killed the E-C-D chord progression lol.
Janick Gers always loses points for Maiden for  me, super f**king sloppy player. When I saw IM live Janick was missing notes, bending out of tune, doing poorly intonated vibrato like no tomorrow and it made me cringe.
Luckily they've got Adrian Smith, who actually has an amazing ear for intonation and a much more developed sense of phrasing.

Ahh this always kills me. It's like choosing between my dad and my brother you know. Iron Maiden is like my dad, and Dream Theater like my brother. I like hanging out and chilling with my brother more, because he's such a cool guy, but I respect my dad more and I know he's wise and came first before both of us. I have to take DT because they're definitely my favorite band ever, but I also have a special soft spot for Maiden.

They both have excellent musicians.

Dickinson vs LaBrie- Hard decision. Both have a great vocal range. Dickinson rarely grates when he hits the high notes, though. Whereas LaBrie, although excellent most of the time, sometimes his voice packs it in on the high pitched parts. I'll give the edge to Dickinson here. Although, LaBrie excels when singing softer stuff.

Guitars- Smith, Murray, and Gers are the Three Horsemen, a bloody brilliant team of guitarists. Some don't like Janick's attempts to be Pete Townsend on stage (the acrobatics and stunts), but I think he adds stage presence and personality to the band. I actually think Dave Murray is the best Maiden guitarist, though. Let's not forget, he's been there all along the way alongside Steve, and sometimes he gets overlooked in favour of Adrian Smith. Petrucci is just amazing, and could stand his own against Maiden's trio. I wonder if, given the chance, could any of Maiden's players do some of the stuff he has done.

Drums- Clive Burr was good. Nicko McBrain is bloody awesome, but Portnoy is just a god. He's the Bonham or Moon of this era, in my opinion.

Bass- Harris is fantastic, and you can always hear him plodding along in the background, unlike Myung, who, although great, often follows the guitar lead, and often can't be heard in the mix. Notable exceptions are his great solos in 'Panic Attack', 'Metropolis 1', 'A Change Of Seasons', and 'The Dance of Eternity'.

I love both groups a lot. It's hard to pick a winner. DT have more variety than IM, though, so I'll give them the edge.

Petrucci has some kick ass solos and the Hollow Years live solo is incredible, but he also has some unnecessary w**k too.
That last minute of This Dying Soul they could have left out, totally unnecessary w**kage. Some of the solos off the last album and SC were pretty meh too. Petrucci wrote his best solo in the 90s IMO.

IM does have a great deal less instrumental w**kery, that is true. They are great players, without needing to show it off.

DT I think do write excellent songs (many people here say they can't write good songs), but they could do with some editing, I think. Check out Misunderstood or Home, for example. Awesome songs, IMO, but the last minute or so of them is unnecessary. And indeed, so is the last minute of This Dying Soul.

My vote goes to the 'Theater.

I think Iron Maiden became a characature of themselves over the years. One might argue that Dream Theater is starting to do the same, however. I just never saw how Maiden was special one way or another. A pretty good metal band, in my opinion, but not good enough to take down the best progressive metal band.

Point 1. Although both are excellent vocalists, I found Dickinson less emotional than La Brie. But on Live performances Bruce really Kick-Asses, While La Brie has the tendency to Thumbs Down I'll Give a tie here.

Point 2. While Steve Harris has created a school, and has one of the best Right Hand in the business, John Myung has developed an incredible skill level on his instrument. Point Myung.

Point 3. Jhon Petrucci has kinda lost his mojo, since SFAM, Where is the emotion? Despite what I said, his soloing is superb (listen Under A Glass Moon). On the other hand the CHEMISTRY between Maiden's axemen is Awesome. Point Maiden

Point 4. IMHO Despite being a superb drummer Portnoy has the tendency to overplay in the song, while I always enjoy the finesse that Mc Brain brought to Maiden. Point Nicko

Point 5. Totally Agree, classic Maiden are THE COVER ARTS.
