Where Eagles Dare by Iron Maiden is the first to come to mind. A fine way of introducing their new drummer at the time, as it was also the start to the whole album.

I'll have to relisten to that.
But in a similar vein I have to mention Painkiller by Judas Priest...also an excellent way to introduce a new drummer.

Or was it a new drummer....I forgot.
It was. Ram it Down had Dave Holland and Painkiller was Travis's first with Priest. I will go with Rainbow's Stargazer.

I've always been kinda fond of the opening in "Atlas"by Battles. It's very simple, but perfect for the build-up the whole track. Same goes for "Leyendecker", from the same album.

I would prefer Gangland by Iron Maiden.

Hancock's Crossings has a nice drums/percussion intro as well.

Vanden Plas's Iodic Rain has a very good drum intro, and I rather like the drumming thatstarts Isis' Wrists of Kings.

The same I would choose. Unfortunately, now I can't remember any other similar tracks, but I'm sure I will later in the day.

Another one I really enjoy, in fact more than the one I first mentioned, is Dream Theater's 6:00. It's possibly my least favourite track of that album, but the drum intro is just brilliant.

Good call!
But I love the track too.
Me too...and yeah, had forgotten about this one, kickass intro indeed! It's actually my favourite track from the album...it might sound silly in places but it's so damn infectious!

Actually, "6.00" is my favourite track on an album which I find very hard going at best. If all the album had been like that, perhaps I'd have enjoyed more.

I should have added that despite being possibly the least favourite track from the album I still enjoy it very much, Awake is a great album in its entirety if you ask me

In that same spirit, "Guitar Shop" by Jeff Beck. Terry Bozio opens it amazingly sloooooooow, yet it kicks.

More slow ones:
Intruder and Biko by Peter Gabriel (Jerry Marota).
Fallen Angel by Robbie Robertson (Manu Katche).
Show Don't Tell by Rush (you know).
Nothing rips, though, like Alphonse Mouzon's intro to Birdfingers on The Eleventh House with Larry Coryell.
Lots of good ones mentioned in this forum.

I wish I could kick myself... Just saw a post mentioning Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" (a song I love), and thought about one of my favourite songs of all time, which opens in a similar way - Blue Oyster Cult's "Veteran of the Psychic Wars". True, it's not 'drums only', because the drumming is backed by keyboards, but the drums are by far the most prominent sound of the two.

Robo-Warriors by Gong off the new album 2032, it's one of the funniest drum openings, and song openings in general, that I have ever heard! It's weirder than the middle-eighths for Eat That Phone Book Coda and Pot Head Pixies because it isn't even similar to Gong's style. That robotic sound has to raise a smile on your face. DAMN! This could make a good part for a review, I CALL DIBS! And I only heard 45 seconds of it....

Same here.
A very simple intro, actually just the rhythm without music, but that I like a lot but a very underrated drummer is Alice in Chain's No Excuses from Jar of Flies from Sean Kinney.
A lot lies in the production. Megadeth's one for "trust" couldn't be simpler (non-drummers can play it) yet it sounds so powerful and menacing because the drums sound so BIG and LOW....

Well, I think tool wins this one hands down, with both ticks and leeches and reflection. However, if you can count Bboom as an intro to Thrak, then I'd have to give king crimson the award. Honestly though, I don't like most drum intros, even though I should as a drummer. They're really quite predictable.
Edit: I found it! Flattening of emotions by death is the greatest drum intro ever! My god I love that one so much
