I guess I've been a collaborator for about 6 months, maybe longer. It only came about through writing reviews. I went through a phase of writing loads of them and that earned me 'Collaborator' status. I haven't written any for ages though. I read back over some of my old reviews and I cringed I will get round to writing some more. Honest!
If you want to collaborate I guess you just need to be a prolific review writer, though I'm sure there are other ways of collaborating. You'll have to speak to Maani & Co.

When Dream & Day Unite: 4 (Don't let the vocals and production distract you)
Images & Words: 5 (The best prog rock work of them, "Surrounded" is pure prog)
Live At The Marquee: 3 (seems more like a bootleg)
Awake: 5 (This is their masterpiece in a metal sense)
A Change Of Seasons: 4 (The covers don't count, as the record was meant as an EP with the covers as bonuses)
Falling Into Infinity: 4 (The songs are top notch, if you like this album depends on whether you like Sherinian ... I do)
One In A Livetime: - (Don't own it, I listened in once and didn't like the production)
Cleaning Out The Closet: - (Don't know it)
Scenes From A Memory: 5 (Their masterpiece in a conceptional sense)
Live Scenes From New York: 4 (just because 4.5 is not allowed and Budokan tops it)
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence: 4/5 (CD1 has some shallow moments, CD2 is simply awesome)
Train Of Thought: 4 (actually, I like it as much as the records I rated 5 ... maybe the problem this album has is that it seems more like a series of song writing ideas than the other albums. Check out the interviews of the band about their song writing process to see what I mean)
Live At Budokan: 5 (@fandango: 3? What is bad about this DVD? The video AND the audio are perfect ... they captured exactly what goes on at an "Evening with Dream Theater". Flawless playing, great musical jokes, frantic japanese people ;-) ...)

lol, the covers are the best part of the CD. I'd had given it a 1 if not for them. Unfortunatly it also illustrates so strongly just how mediocre their own song writing skills are.

I like the covers, but I prefer the epic. I don't want to disturb this thread, so I'll open another about that track ... I'm really interesting why someone would rate it 1.

Hardly. I really dislike TOT, and I'm about as big a DT fan as they come, and listen to bands that are a lot
heavier than them... it was just poorly written, that's all. No matter
how many times I try, I can't enjoy listening to most of the songs on
the album. I wouldn't mind them making a heavy album if it wasn't,
well, really boring, but it was.

For those who have said they don't know what 'Cleaning Out The Closet' is, it is a 9 track album strecthing to just under an hour's worth of original material, which Mike Portnoy released through the fanclub in 1999, just after 'Scenes from a Memory'.
They aren't really demos; they are all completed songs stretching from the Images & Words Sessions thru to the Falling Into Infinity Sessions, and to frank are well worth hearing. Possibly my favourite is the 11 minute track 'Raise The Knife', which anyone who likes Awake, would feel right at home with, and 'The Way It Used To Be', which was pulled from that album before release. Makes for very interesting listening.

Yeah, I'm afraid that's how much I like DT. I really know every single note off every album and love every single song of theirs. If people don't like they'll have to learn to live with it.

/\ well, there are much harder things to learn to live with... but come on, some objectivity is called for. As much as I enjoy Dream Theater and am willing to defend them and assign most of the flaws they're accused of here to the critics mistaking them for their UK counterpart Dream Theatre , they (Dream Theater, that is ) are nowhere near as original as many bands in the archives, and being creatively original is an enormous asset...

For me TOT was so bad not because of the heaviness, but because it was so boring and uninspiring. It was littered with needless and mindless intrumental sections where the idea seemed to be to create speed and complexity rather than music. I know a lot of people think all of Dream Theater's music is complexity for the sake of complexity, and while i don't completely agree with that for all of the other albums, when it comes to TOT i just can't find anything to dispute that idea.

To me it sounds as if they got in the studio turned everything up to 11
and went hell for leather to create the heaviest, fastest music they could. I
enjoy a good sonic onslaught but at least have some respite and melody
thrown in.
They are capable of creating heavy and complex music as we know, but
something you can follow throughout the song has to be in there as well.
Still a great band and great bands are allowed a light blip in their career.

TOT contains many nice melodies, they're just not as polished and harder to find than they were on their previous releases. I think that this album was a logical thing for them to do, it's something they really enjoy (at least I get that impression from watching them playing the stuff live). It provides a necessary contrast to SfaM, not in quality, but in that is is less polished, more raw and direct than anything they did before. Symphony X did it with Odyssey, Metallica with St. Anger, DT with TOT ... I think, at least Symhony X and DT succeeded brillantly!

In the end TOT is the album they wanted to make, I think that it is "polished" BTW. They wanted to make an album with all heavy songs and no ballads, like a Metallica album. Something simple, strightforward and loads of widdly bits. Its out of their system now! The more I here TOT the better it gets. Btw the instrumental track brings to mind Liquid Tension Experiment to me.

It's not complex, it's scales for the sake of making people think it's complex. If you ever listen to college music students practicing, that's what most dream theater solo/instrumental sections sound like.

Images and Words: ****
Awake: &nbs p; *****
Scenes: ** (Sometimes I WANT to award 3, but it just drags too much...)

Octavarium: *****
Based on this, what else might I like of DT's?

I gave Images and Words (the only album I've listened to more than once) 3 stars in my main review - but now I think I was a little over-generous and should give it 2 stars.
The more I listen to it, the more I'm convinced there's less substance than I originally thought there might be - given that repeated plays can reveal hidden depths. In this case, there are no hidden depths - more hidden shallows.
I don't find the vocals or the production offensive, but I do find the melodies to be entirely lacking and uncatchy, the noodling to be clinically precise and very dull, and the structure to be of the old-school standard rock-song format. This to me is the biggest failing, as prog rock exemplifies itself structurally - blurring over old rock song formats, borrowing from classical or jazz - or better still, making it up.
Talking of making it up, another defining aspect of prog for me is the feeling of organic unfolding - hiding the mechanics of the structure under music that appears to shift or grow into the next section, using sudden changes only as dynamic contrast. With "Images and Words", the opposite is true - more like standard heavy metal, where sudden changes are over used for a schock impact - but the momentum is always lost, as this effect is predictably over-used.
The keyboard sounds suck (IMO) and the drums are over-busy, there is no clear feeling of direction to the songs outside the rock-song format, no "hummable tunes", nonsensical lyrics, an almost complete lack of emotion or originality and a general feel of a group who'd like to thrash out and play real metal, but because of their education think it somehow beneath them - except by way of tribute to the great metal bands of the past.
Apart from that it's OK - or I'd give it 1 or even 0 stars

It's more complex than a lot of rock or metal. Maybe complex was a poor choice of wording, but what i meant by it is the more developed song structures than other bands, and the long winded instrumental sections.
I say TOT is complexity for the sake of complexity because that's basically all it contains. A few poorly written songs with long winded and un-necessary instrumental sections. Thus, it feels as if Dream Theater were trying to create a metal atmosphere but also keeping their 'complexity' so they jammed a whole bunch of nonsense in there.
I know there are a lot of bands that are far more complex than dream theater, but dream theater are still complex compared to many. Maybe if i could think of a weaker version of complex i'd use it ...interesitng? ...detailed?

Actually, my problem with Scenes was that there was too much meaningless soloing, especially from Rudess. Part of liking Awake SO much is that it's much more under control than Scenes or even ToT (though for some reason since ToT is heavier it's a LOT easier for me to listen to).
Probably Change of Seasons I'll try first, before considering spending $26 or whatever on Six Degrees.

I think cluttered is the word you are looking for. Long sessions of scales, modes and arppegios. But the guitar is saturated so it must be genius cuz it sounds so cool.

The first ten minutes of the track Octavarium still puzzle me ... I can't figure out if it's the worst DT ever recorded, or if it's ok, or if it's the best thing they ever did. At the end of the slide guitar solo, Petrucci plays the melody that will then be picked up in the next part and at the end of Octavarium. Hmm ... I still need more time to analyze
