Nothing too original, but I'd be interested to know what his favorite Gentle Giant album and song are. I'd like to know how the band came up with some of their musical ideas, too. Ask him what new music he has been enjoying lately, in a related follow up question, ask him if he listens to any newer or more recent progressive rock bands, and does he have an opinion on any of them.
Otherwise, funny stories about gigs and other band related humiliating incidents are always a lot of fun. |

Ask him who was the main man in the band.
Ask him why they broke up.
Ask him if he wants a GG reunion.

Ask the man what he really thought about the last two albums Giant For A Day and Civillian. And inparticular was the writing on the wall when they recorded Civillian. Personally I love both albums. I think that it proved that they could work in simpler contexts and still retain their identity. ------------- |

OK I'm not going to go there as have been smacked down in the past for quoting lyrics too extensively. Wow, good luck with the interview.
Ian Anderson once comented that when on tour with JT, the members of GG didn't seem to be getting on very well ('not happy bunnies' if I recall correctly). Was there generally an inter-personal problem among the members, or was that tour just a difficult time?
Was the breakup generally agreed upon, or were there some members who wanted to call it a day and others not? And if so, which ones were in which camp?
GG were a phenomenal live band with incredible musicianship on stage. But what was the most embarrassing thing ever to go wrong? (That's the little gremlin in me, asking)
Was there any certain member who came up with the concepts of their concept albums (Three Friends, Power and the Glory, Interview)?
Was there ever a proposed instrument that was considered unsuitable even for a band like GG?
Was there mutual agreement in the band on the musical direction taken from 'Missing Piece' onwards?
In retrospect, is 'In a Glass House' still considered to be sub-standard by the band members (an opinion I never could understand)?
Were there ever any problems with the Mooghs, such as other bands such as KC and ELP were plagued with?
Hyperthetically, should GG reform, what musical direction would possibly be taken?
Would there be a market for a reformed GG?
If the signs were right, could a reunion include all three Shulman brothers, or is there any Shulman who is strictly opposed to such a step on principle?
How many out of five stars out of the PA rating system would Ray Shulman award to each of their studio albums?

Edit: One more question: I just read an interview with Kerry, and he mentioned maybe doing something with Ray, maybe ask him something along those lines. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh! I'm still working out how to record the call. I have an attachment cassette recorder thingy, but i need a smaller telephone jack. I have a digital recorder, but I'm trying to find an SD card. And I was to record it at my wife's work, but they may be having tech work on their computer system. You weren't asking me anything, you were pestering someone else who's trying to get something done for your entertainment without getting paid a dime for doing so. I am not sure that Derek would be interested in half of these questions asked here ...
If anything I would try and get into the more conceptual and intelectual discusssions of the music, things that might have him realize (like he doesn't know) how inteligent his band's audience was and is, and that there is a lot of literary content in the music ... and if he would be willing to discuss it. I believe I read somewhere 30 years ago that the name of the band came from Rabelais ... as did 3 friends ... and some other bits and pieces, but I can not tell you which ...
As an example, a friend of mine interviewed Robin Williamson live on the radio and turned him loose and let him talk about music and tell jokes and about each cut and stuff on the album at that time (Journey's Edge) ... and it was one of the most enjoyable 2 hours I have ever heard ...
Let him talk about philosophy, what he likes, how he sees it ... and then you do the work connecting that to the music ... even if it spreads you thin ... it's about "him" and the "music" ... not you ... provide him with a "tv camera" so we all can see him ... make it simple and fun for him.
