I hesitated considerably in this vote. It was decided to go to Tony Williams afterwards.

I really love some of the drummers listed here but I thought I'd give a vote to Peter Erskine for making me understand jazz drumming (with his solo albums, not Weather Report). It's probably going to be his only vote

This is a heckuva list with many worthy candidates. Although I wouldn't give you a wooden nickel for him now, when Phil Collins was in his prime, he was as good as anyone. Listen to the awesome drumming on the Gabriel Genesis albums, and then check out Brand X's first 3 albums. Incredible! One guy who wasn't on the list whom I truly love is Michael Giles, whose distinctive style can be recognized immediately. I would rather have a drummer like Giles with a unique style all his own than a technically oriented drummer like Michael Portney.

On your list, I went for Chris Maitland, although I personally think Gavin Harrison is a better fit for that band.
Maitland is still very good though. On the Coma Divine live disc, he delivers a great performance.

Not an easy choice, so many great ones (Erskine, White, Williams, Wyatt, Liebezeit, Mouzon, yeah, even Collins, Evans, Thompson, Maitland ) but it was between Gadd and Cobham , Billy getting the final nod.

I didn't even notice Wyatt on here. That would have made it a much tougher choice, but I think Jaki would have probably gotten it anyway.

Collins for me... im a drummer myself some of the stuff he did on the early genesis albums was really tasteful, imaginative, slick and creative. Not my fave drummer of all time, for me that goes to Martin Lopez of ex-Opeth fame for his lovely latin influenced metal

I voted for Maitland, He is such a monster on "Coma Divine". I understand people who state that Gavin is the most gifted chef in the kitchen, but that doesn´t change the fact that these two guys overall are as far from each other as garlic and chocolate. Meaning that I for one relate more to the stumbling roaring toms of Maitland, than the sheer precision and complexity of Gavin. Gavin is also one of my top guys, but it is the "feel" that takes it this time...
Phil Collins and Jaki Liebezeit could just as well have been my choice. Phil is pure brilliance, and I don´t think ANYBODY could have put down the same sort of overpowering drumming, that he did for "Unorthodox Behaviour", and I would have to say exactly the same for Jaki on "Ege Bamyasi", but that´s an altogether different kind of animal Jaki runs with the title for most original playing style....

Yeah, Bill Bruford should totally be in the list! I vote for the LEGEND - Steve Gadd.

...It's a good thing the poll was asking for a 'favorite' instead of the 'best', which would have been harder to pick in this list. But Jaki Liebezeit gets my nod here for his minimal but profound technique.

Phil Collins is a great drummer. I like Bill Bruford too. And I quite like Nick Mason, even if he isn't the most technically skilled.
However, I would have voted John Weathers (Gentle Giant), if given a choice.

I love a lot of names here....Tim Alexander in particular was a tempting choice, as was Chris Maitland.
I'll vote for Brann Dailor though. I like to think of him as the modern day Kieth Moon. Never a dull moment with that guy! And, as the latest Mastodon album proved, he also has some serious groove when restrained a bit

Since you left Peart out of the list (<sobbing>), I went with Phil. The man was a powerhouse in the 70's, right up on to, I'd say, 1980.

I don't know all of them, and some I know are fantastic. Tony Williams is the one I often choose as the "other" drummer choice since he is, I think surprisingly, often neglected in polls despite being a big name (but then I guess it's not really surprising cause he's a jazz drummer). Lots of great choices. One not listed that I would have included had it been my favourites, and would fit in very well with this list, is Billy Hart (who has worked on projects with the excellent, and listed, Lenny White).
Phil Collins is undoubtedly good, but I don't know that he's quite in the same league as some of the legends of drumming here. But then this a favourites list, not best drummers.

Not on the list, but definitely worth mentioning: Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru and Christian Burchard of Embryo,
Both are very familiar with traditional styles of drumming. Burchard studied the Indian art of drumming for years, Neumeier is more familiar with African and old Japanese drumming. Both are experienced jazz drummers too. Neumeier is probably the most versatile drummer in the world; there is hardly a musical style he has not dabbled in.

Ringo for his simple, progressive style, Bruford for his polyrythmic approach, Michael Giles for his mixed style--Danny carey is a drummer monster. I think these guys pretty much cover it--Pip Pyle also comes to mind.

Guy Evans was *lol* my main influence when I started drumming. I remember watching the Theme One video that's on youtube on such lame quality and trying to figure out the exact beats he did, only to remember before I got to my lesson to try it. His left hand is godly.

Well, dave weckl's book is part of what taught me to drum, and I enjoyed learning from his book quite a bit, but on this list the one I enjoy listening to the most is Danny Carey. He might not be the most technically skilled drummer ever (weckl's got him beat), but he always captivates me somehow...

Yes, we all know who is missing. Pierre-Pip-Christian Bruford.
Steve Gadd is always so smooth, so subtle, so discreet, and such an integral part of the music in which he participates. To be unobtrusive and yet essential is, to me, mastery. Of the 21st century drummers, Paatos' Ricard "Huxflux" Nettermalm reminds me of Gadd a lot.
