I'm a huge fan of this project, and I want to know the opinion from the progfans about it... I see they are not that famous nor mentioned in many of the threads so this is the deal:
The electronic mixture with streight metal riffing and a lot of ambience synth and samples are the elements of the project, very accesible for mainstream audience as well as progfans... I think both Matheos and Moore understand very well about what sound they like and they are working on their own path... maybe they are not groundbreaking, but that's not the intention of this project, I think every single element is there to improve the meaning of the songs...
Especially, the emotionless voice from Kevin Moore is ideal to take the roll of this "spy" character of the story of the three albums... his hipocrit attitude and his tricky meanings about what he really means is very fun to hear and very well developed... there's a lot more to talk about the guess players and the particular things about each album... hope that you share you impression about this band... the main thing is:
Is this a omen for what's to come in other prog bands? Is this music the sound of the future...???
EDIT: I changed the name of the thread because there is no official Appreciation thread about this band, so I invite you to post if you knew this band... cheers...

Ah, now here we go! I love O.S.I.
Their newest album in particular, with the stellar drumming of Gavin Harrison, really floored me. A very dark, brooding little project. Here's hoping they develop further and....maybe, just maybe....tour?
Music of the future? Hey, I'm all for it

I love the band, and the sound really fits their talents perfectly. I enjoy the formula, but I don't think it's inherently anything really special.

"spy character"? A little bit of Glass Onion, have we?

Tour...now that would be really interesting. I love their formula but I wouldn't think that it's the next step in prog evolution. What's prog evolution, btw? It's always going round and round and getting new branches, it's more like a labyrinth than a stream. That's how I view it.

Oh well... maybe they are not groundbreaking but they really are at the top of that electronic-metal merge... About the Glass Onion...??? well... there is a plot line in the 3 albums, so I don't think it's that hide... I prefer Mike Portnoy to Gavin... I don't know why... maybe hearing Portnoy with a small fancy kit and sound equally great is great and healthy... and is nice to see Moore taking control and not alouding the showing off... jejeje... but well... a tour is difficult to happen... Kevin Moore is too weird in my opinion... he is not that much interested in live performances... which is sad but... what I know about him...

Sometimes bands are studio only for very good reasons.

I believe you are right. However, it would be more fair to attribute this direction to Nine Inch Nails.

Yeah... maybe... they really bring a lot of this elements... but I think O.S.I. take it to a complete new level...or maybe is that their sound apeals more to me... but hey... I would love the next age of music if it sounds like that...

I think focus on names is not a good idea and "names" dont make good music. I love O.S.I and first time i listen O.S.I i possessed. but i cant say " music for future" to it . O.S.I is very impressive and Kevin know how make sense to others. He invite another famus artists and use metal riffs with electronic music to impress. With theses elements he have wide range of prog fans.
Progressive is a multi side musical art and few names or few elements not enough to make or reach to next level. Essential question is " What is level in prog?"

I know it's expensive Joel, but make sure to buy the special edition... besides of the wonderful digipack (one of the most originals I have seen) the music in the second CD is excellent, no mind that it last only 30 minutes of music. It also came with footage of their recording process... is not a formal documentary, it's just a camera recording some songs and that's it... but I think you will love it Joel... let us know when you finally get it Ok...???

I've only got one of their albums (the special edition of Blood), and like it quite a bit. Getting another album of theirs is on my long list of things to buy.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding a decent price for the limited edition of the debut; the band's store on Burning Shed has sold out of everything I'm still looking for one though. If anyone has a recommendation for an online store to buy it from, I'd love to be told.

I got the debut and Blood from JB Hi Fi. Not sure if they're still kicking around in high street stores. I do see copies of Blood show up occassionally.
I think you'd like OSI. It's a lot more electronica influenced than Dream Theater, and its an acquired taste but I enjoy Moore's vocal style. I'm almost certain you'd like Steve Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt's vocal contributions on the debut, and Blood respectively.

I'm a big fan of the band too, and have all their CD's (including special editions for their debut and Blood).
I like Kevin Moore's understated vocals; they are very original and set the band apart from others. Keyboards are great too! Interesting that most review rate their debut above Free, but I like Free much better. I especially love the song Go, and the break in the middle of the song.
Gavin Harrison's drumming really lifted Blood too.
Very much looking forward to their next release.

Blood was great. Gavin's drumming lifted the album immensely. On the Harrison/Portnoy thing, I side with Gavin. He's just an incredible drummer. Portnoy of course is an excellent drummer too, no offence intended.

Note sure if anyone here is a member, but there's a forum/mailing list called The Mooreatorium Forum which keep up to date news about Kevin Moore projects, here are some great articles from them:
Hey, everyone:
A news update was posted yesterday on the OSI website that confirms the
band has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records and has begun writing its
fourth album. In the posting, the album's release date was cited as
early 2011, not late 2010 as Metal Blade had previously said.
The news update consists of a copy-and-pasted email exchange between Kevin Moore
and Jim Matheos in which the duo humorously discusses the task of
updating the OSI website. "We could just say we've just signed a new
deal with MB and have begun writing OSI4," Matheos wrote in the
exchange, dated June 9, 2010. "Target date early 2011?"

Which was recently followed up with this:
Hey, everyone:
Metal Blade Records announced today on OSI's MySpace page plans to
re-issue OSI's 2003 debut album "Office of Strategic Influence" on
September 28. Like the original, the re-issue version will include a
limited-edition CD that contains cover versions of Pink Floyd's "Set the
Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and Neil Young's "New Mama," as well
as a demo track called "The Thing That Never Was" played by Jim Matheos
and Mike Portnoy.
A multimedia section will include a video created by Kevin Moore
for the instrumental song "Horseshoes and B-52s" and two separate
documentary-style clips shot at the Carriage House Studios in Stamford,
Conn., during the recording of the album in June 2002.
In other news, OSI's MySpace page was redesigned today and now includes
streaming audio of songs from each of OSI's studio albums and the band's
Remix EP released in 2006.

Both incredibly exciting IMO; still haven't got any OSI but I adore Chroma Key and love the samples I've heard, as I've mentioned.
