You are listening to Lark's Tongues in Aspic at 2pm on a Wednesday, and the phone rings. You do not hear it, but after it's done you play the message, and you hear a bright voice say, "Heeeeeeeeey [Your Name]! This Miley Cyrus! I was talking to my, like, best friend Henry Plainview, and he says you're, like, the best [your instrument] player in, like, the whole freaking world! Since he's never wrong, I want to make you, like, an offer. I want you to play with me on a Christmas album! Then we can go on tour! It'll be, like, so aweeeeeeeeeesome! Of course, since I know you're going to, like, be making all kinds of artistic contributions, we'll split the profit from the album and tour 50/50. Call me back babe! My cell is, like, 555-555-5555"
You are stunned and are surprised that Miley Cyrus got your number, since the only person you've called in the past six months is Pizza Hut. What do you do next?

I accept. First because I'd make money. Second because I'd tour the US. Third, I'll wait till she's legal, and I'll deliver Henry Plainview a huge blow to his ego...

Without question.
And when a person makes fun of me for selling out, I'll buy another case of the good stuff, turn up Judge Judy, and bring in the virgins to wax my loins.

I wouldn't classify it as selling out though, just diversifying a little. And, oh yeah, there is the money thing. I could use some.

No...but I have a family.
I actually like my day job and my family life, and my little gig where I play at most a gig a month and do my own thing for the most part. Music is pleasure for me, and I've seen what it's like when it's work. It is HARD work.
But I would probably turn it down even if Mikael Akerfeldt called too.
I'm an old fuddy-duddy.

How does one remain a virgin while waxing loins?
Also you owe me brain bleach for putting Judge Judy and that image in the same sentence.

I would not. I don't know anything about the music of this little girl and, since I have a 9 to 5 job with an average pay, I'm not in a hurry to win thousands and thousands of dollars. Plus, I'm considering a dilemma: joining a jazz-rock drummer, a prog-metal band, a thrash-metal guitarist or trying to release my own CD-R?

Well let's clarify something here.
Is this a permanent gig as Miley's guitarist? For a long time, anyway? No way. No way I'm doing that.
You need me in the studio for, say, 2 months, on the road for a few months more? Yeah, I'd do it, get paid, and go back to listening to Larks' Tongues when I get home (on considerably better speakers, at that).

Like Pat, I don't see why it's selling out. I'm sure most people people don't work at fast food because they love doing that, surely, so if they are only doing it for the money, they must surely be selling out. And f**k it, if it's only about the money, hell yeah I'd do it, and to be honest, I think I would genuinely enjoy touring with Miley Cyrus, as much as I despise her music, more so than working a mundane fast food job.

So what's the pay? Union scale? More than likely there's not much money in this gig. On the other hand, I'd be asking myself, "Am I gonna make some connections that will pay off in the future?" Hell, I used to play Louie Louie at junior high proms and would do it again if the $ were right. I've already long ago sold my soul to Corporate America. It's just a lateral transfer to work for Corporate Music.

This is actually interesting enough that I should elaborate, since it will provide a lesson with regard to the life of a working musician.
First, you'll get union scale for the gig. What this means is that for the hour and a half you are actually performing you'll be paid fairly well; however there is no pay for non-stage time. You'll also probably get some sort of per diem allowance for lodging and meals. So while Miley stays at the five star hotel and eats filet mignon and salmon in a white wine sauce, you'll be staying at the Motel 6 and subsisting on Egg McMuffins.
Miley will be flying from venue to venue, while you'll be on the bus with the other unfortunates who signed up with the tour.
If you consider this an opportunity to get in good with Miley, say sexually, think again. More than likely the only time you'll ever see her is during the performances. She will not be hanging out with the rabble in the band. However, you may be able to land a pancake house waitress, provided she's not looking to move up in the world in terms of who she hangs out with.
If you're really lucky, some manufacturer may offer to give you an instrument, provided you play it every night. To see Miley's guitar player pickin' on a Fender is worth it to them.
When tour is over, well good luck you're on your own. Nice having you around. Maybe see you next go-round. Hence my previous comment as to "Will I make any useful contacts?"
No I am not making this up.

I can't play an instrument. I haven't heard any of her 'music' but even so I get the feeling I could still pick it up pretty quick! So yep I wouldn't be at all bothered about playing the music.
I suspect 'listening to her prattle on' might be more of a challenge. Hopefully, that wouldn't be part of the deal and I wouldn't have to wear some daft mickey mouse outfit or the like?

I would make it part of the contract that we travelled in the same bus - only for their own 'protection' . And I would need them there so they can help with writing new material for the next album - (The Country Prog triple album a slight change in direction!).

Not at all. I don't like to be phoned while I'm listening to music, and if I'm in a polite mood I'll say that I have played hardly any guitar since 1991 (which is true), but it is more likely that I would make some insulting remarks as I use to do against any telemarketeer who penetrates my privacy by making a phone call.

It depends. It depends on a lot of parameters.
I might join as a session musician for some crap - be it Miley or Aqua/Barbie Girl or anything else, but it depends on the working conditions. If an artist is doing an absolutely trashy pop and it's actually aware of it, and having fun, then I guess I'd say yes. Not sure I'd be enjoying it though. Performing and nodding your head in the tempo of the music you absolutely despise is tedious, and it leaves a bitter taste in mouth. The key factor is amount of money - would you agree to work on a cemetery, as an undertaker, for a month or two for let's say US$***** (entire your own figure that you consider high) ? Would you do touring with pop artist for a month or two for the same amount? Bite your own teeth, swallow it and make it through. Personaly, I would rather be working on a cemetary...but that's another story.
Would you play for a good rock artist with high degree of artistry? Assuming my technical skills are competent enough to cope with the music, I guess I would, in 99% of the cases, but...for example - with all the respect for the late artist - James Brown - is out of the question. I saw him live, and he was great, and his band was great, but I've heard he used to terrorize his musicians. I guess there are a lot of other artists that we like but are obnoxious on rehearsals and tours. I hate tense relations in band, or in any working environment for that matter.
The other thing is personal pride. Let's say some eccentric Rockefeller came in out of the blue, pointing a finger at you, offering you to do a solo album, under your own name, but it has to be a crappy reggaeton? For one million dollars? Well I guess I would accept it...and do the best possible album after that.

Maybe? If (insert your favorite singer) calls you and offers you a job in his/her tour and you´d have to think about it... that´d make you a bag full of douches.
I´d probably say yes right now, cause I´m pretty much in zero in the music buisness. If that helps me get started I can later always claim that I has just high 24/7 back in the days and didn´t know what I was doing...
