My vote is on the assumption that this is for these groups' body of work in the 70s, not to include later releases.

1. Camel
2. King Crimson
3.Genesis
4. Jethro Tull
5. Pink Floyd
6. Yes
7. Gentle Giant
8. ELP
9. Van der Graaf Generator
10. Rush

The top 4 spots are virtually interchangeable for me. Love them all; when I'm listening to any one of them, I feel at that moment as though that group is my favorite. All I have to do is put on one of the others, though, and then THAT group is my favorite. The only one of the 10 here I'm not too keen on is Rush, just not into the high vocals. (I don't mind Jon Anderson on the early Yes albums, but can't take much of his singing anymore either).

1)Jethro Tull-1970-1974 and 1977-1980. LITP is a very important cd full of gems from 1968-1971
2)Camel-Love the debut album and 1976-1981 albums
3)Gentle Giant-strong for most of the 70s
4)Genesis-I prefer 1976-1981 over the slightly weird, fairy Gabriel era. But I love foxtrot
5)Yes- Love the 1970-1974 era although I'd rather shorter songs than longer experimental ones
6)Van der graaf- H to He, Godbluff, World record, Quiet zone
7)Caravan-Grey and pink, The album, Cunning stunts, Blind dog
8)Frank Zappa-from 1972 onwards
9)King Crimson-only really lasted for half the decade, with many lineup changes
10)Emerson Lake and Palmer-were cool until about 1973

Pink Floyd is easily my #1

Then Yes, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Camel, Rush, ELP

Something like that. Also of note is that I really like no more than 3 albums by each of these bands (sans Floyd), some less.

It all depends on how you define popular.....................VDGG were not as popular as ELP, who were a giant in prog, but didn't sell as many albums as Floyd.......is it personal choice or is it real popularity...then a different picture would show. Just asking.

My #1 has been firm for a while now, but the rest are more prone to shift over time:

1-King Crimson
2- Genesis
3-Yes
4-Rush
5-Pink Floyd
6-Jethro Tull
7-Camel
8-ELP
9-Gentle Giant
10-Van der Graaf Generator (though I'm not as familiar with them as I am the others)

1. Yes (by a large, although decreasing, margin)
2. Gentle Giant
3. VDGG (these guys were close to 2, but I've pretty much only heard Pawn Hearts. One of my all time fav albums though.)
4. Genesis
5. King Crimson
6. Pink Floyd
7. Rush
8. Jethro Tull

I don't really love Camel, but I so far find myself disliking ELP, so I suppose the list ends with:

9. Camel
10. ELP

The only ones that were easy to place were pink floyd and ELP.

The others were EXTREMELY hard. Placing VDGG at 9 on the list hurts, i really love all these bands!

not having any German bands on the list is pretty unrealistic; at least Amon Düül 2, Can and Tangerine Dream have to be on it. how anyone can put Rush on the list is beyond me; they did not even exist in the 70s. my list would be like this:
1) Genesis
2) ELP
3) Yes
4) Pink Floyd
5) King Crimson
6) Gentle Giant
7) Can
8) Magma
9) Tangerine Dream
10) Amon Düül 2

I think the thread starter was referring to the most popular prog bands, not necessarily the 'best' ...

Tangerine Dream is a good call, they were pretty big, if I remember rightly, but Can and Amon Duul 2? Were they bigger than Rush, even in the 70's?? I wouldn't have thought so.

I did name only popular bands. Tangerine Dream, Can and Amon Düül 2  had a popularity that went far beyond Germany.
Can is one of the most influential bands EVER, outside Germany as well; they were as influential as Pink Floyd.
and Amon Düül 2 also had big success in France and England; they couldn't have toured there else, as they did several times. I am not pulling the names out of an hat

if you are going to include German bands., Eloy, Jane and Novalis were all pretty big too, although I admit they were more derivative than Can and Amon Duul

But having no Italians on the list seems like an unfair slight too  Geek

and Rush actually did exist and put out quite a few albums in the 70s.  I was there (in Canada) and subject to their music non stop by my best friend

I'm not suggesting you are pulling names out of a hat. I'm merely suggesting that bands like Can and Amon Duul, although influential and popular, were not premier league prog bands, in terms of record sales. The thread is about the 'Biggest' 70's prog bands. Whether the bands on the list were the best is another discussion.

Rush did very much exist in the 70's. I know you dont rate them very highly, but they were at their most 'prog' at that time, and albums like Fly By Night and 2112 went gold in the US alone. By the time they were touring Hemispheres in 1978, they were packing out arenas. I think that would earn them aplace on the 'Biggest' bands list, above those you mentioned.

Can is one of the most influential bands EVER, outside Germany as well; they were as influential as Pink Floyd.and Amon Düül 2 also had big success in France and England; they couldn't have toured there else, as they did several times. I am not pulling the names out of an hat

Quite right. The voice of common sense.

it very much depends on how you define "premier league". if you go by record sales they probably weren't.; they never were chart busters. but have you any idea how many bands claim to have been heavily influenced by Can? that I think is more important than record sales

Success depends a lot on population and marketing. It is much easier to sell a million records when the combined populaton of Canada and the USA is close to 300 million than it is in a country like Germany, which, at the time we are speaking, was still divided, and the Western part had only about 60 million inhabitants. And in Germany German bands never got the airplay that American or British bands got. A sad fact but true; the radios played Angloamerican music mostly. That's the reason German bands never were megasellers. But their influence is a lot bigger than their sales ever were.

I agree whole heartedly about the importance of influence. Many of those German bands are cited as influences on many different types of music, including some of the early 80's synth pop that emerged in the UK.

The term 'premier league' in the context of this thread, I took to mean the biggest sellers, and you make good points about the size and nature of the markets.

As an after thought, I added Hawkwind to my list. I was surpised they were missing from the list in the OP. Certainly in the UK, Hawkwind albums were charting quite high up to and including Warrior. The Calvert fronted albums also made top 40 ( I think) Their influence has also been broad, outside the prog field.
